Impressive pressing (as always). Sorry about the shoulder.

Brett, I haven’t been paying attention. My guess is that I am taking 3 - 4 minutes between sets. Sometimes it MIGHT be less than 3 minutes, between sets 1 and 2…sometimes more than 4, between the last 2 sets. But I think 3 - 4 is a safe bet. If I let it run more than 5 minutes, I start to cool down and it makes it worse.
“Grit and determination” is just a severe aversion to failure and losing. I detest being beaten, even by inanimate objects.
As for the 240#…
If yesterday is an indication of how it is going to go, it is going to take everything I can muster to pull it off. Bad form, on a single rep, might sink the ship.
Honestly, I am feeling fatigued and beat up. If I could manage to go into it feeling recovered, I think it would go. I’m not sure how to do that without a deload. But I am going to try to pull it off by going light on Saturday and Monday.
We shall see…[/quote]
Rest can be a good thing.
a while ago: Dr. made me take 8 weeks off from lifting for pec strain. So only worked DL’s and Squats which progressed nicely. Pec healed up great, shoulder pain (chronic and bordering on the bad kind of pain) healed up nicely. MP actually went up after layoff.
Thanks, Steve.
Null, as soon as I hit 300#, or my shoulder explodes, I will back off for a while. It would just be nice if a doc could figure out exactly what is going on and I could get it fixed.
Are you sure you’re not increasing the weight too quickly? What you’re describing sounds exactly like times when I kept plopping on the plates before being ready for it.

That’s exactly how I feel, and it’s made me load up weights I shouldn’t have in the past. As a result, the weight kept going up, but degenerated into gut-busting, screaming, balls to the wall, pull the burning car off the baby effort. Sooner or later you hit the limit, if not injury, and have no choice but pull back.
And if you’re having shoulder problems, for God’s sake, get it taken care of.
Your lifts look great in the vids, but if you’re getting light-headed (!!), blurry, out of breath, and feeling like you got hit by a truck, you may be pushing things too fast.
Thanks, Cav. It isn’t too fast, as I am not that invested in 5x5. I don’t care if it doesn’t keep going. My plan has always been to run it, adding 5# a week, until I fall short. Then switch to something else.
I will do the 240#, for Brett…and, yes, for me, and depending on how that feels (assuming success) decide whether to take it one more round or change up. It is just getting to be too much weight for the number of total reps that I am doing. And that is where the issue is. It is not the reps of a single set at the weight I am using. It is the cumulative reps. If I went by feel alone, I would stop after set 3. But I am hardheaded as hell…just ask my wife.
The light-headedness was a result of breathing issues. I just couldn’t catch my breath enough to hold it for the set, like I normally do. It was a strange day all around. I am feeling a bit better now, though.
And I will get the shoulder checked…again. Just not yet. Like I said, I am pretty sure that it is the bicep tendon and it is not tearing or the like. It doesn’t bother me at all as I sit here. Only when I move my arm at a certain angle or put it under stress, at certain angles.
My wonder is if it is jumping in and out of it’s groove. I don’t know what else could be causing it.
That’s good to hear. It’s just the worst possible time to have breathing issues is when a couple hundred pounds of iron are dangling overhead.

Agreed!
Slack Day
Didn’t really want to lift today. I had other things to do. Kind of played. SHould have stayed lighter on the bench, as 335# hurt in the shoulder, upper arms and elbows. I think I am going to take a week or two and go light, except for MP, of course

Just out of curiousity, have you ever seen a ‘sports doctor’ for you shoulder issue? Most regular doctors seem to have no clue when it comes to injuries involved with sports, or any muscular injuries for that matter. They give you a pill and tell you to stop doing whatever it is that caused it, instead of looking for underlying issues. That has been my experience anyways.
Rug, it was a Sports Medicine doc that pinpointed the inflamed bicep tendon. The regular radiologist said that there wasn’t anything wrong. Gave me a clean bill. The Sports Med. doc then checked the MRI and said, “Yep. Right there. You’ve got fluid on your bicep tendon.” He also said there was slight fraying of the Labrum, but the degree of which was expected with someone who lifted and that it was nothing to worry about.
He gave me a cortisone shot and told me to take a week off. I did. It mostly went away, until I started lifting again. Went back. Got another shot. Took another week off. Same thing happened. I haven’t been back.
I’ll get back to him. If I thought I was causing real damage, I would go now. As it is, the only real issue is the sharpness of the pain at points in the rep. The movement wants to stop when the pain shoots. Kind of a pain (pun intended) when I am trying to finish a rep.
Just sitting here, or doing everyday stuff, it doesn’t hurt at all.

Ran out of time again. The 5x5 is really eating it up.
Good to see the work is continuing. Great work and Mrs Strick is doing well. I agree on 5*5 taking a ton of time. What about maybe alternating between ohp and squats in order to save some time?

Thanks, James. The issue with alternating is a bar shortage. We workout at home. With just 2 bars, we are both relegated to 1. We just need to get started about 15 minutes earlier. Time management!
Well, I have MP later today. My apologies to Brett, but unless something really changes, I will not be doing 5x5.
Work schedule changed and I am going in an hour earlier, but getting off at the same time. As a result, I have slept for shit, for the past 3 nights. Add in typical life stress, like the downstairs AC dying (need it and the furnace replaced), and I am feeling worn out.
Not sure what I am going to do. Hopefully, even though I feel fatigued, I will feel strong. Maybe I can go for a PR…of reps or 1RM.
Mrs. Strick is still doing well. She had some dizziness, the other day. It seems to have passed, though. It is probably linked to the fact that her iron and ferritin are both low. She is now supplementing it. It can take time to normalize, though.
It’s time for Mrs. Strick to start her own log.
What’s her supplement regiment look like?

I agree. But I am not having much luck convincing her, right now.
She takes calcium, B Complex (both of which are necessary after the surgery), Vitamin D, Flax Seed Oil, iron and vitamin C. She was on a multi, but it kept irritating her urinary track. Gonna try it again on an every other day scheme.
I FINALLY got her to start taking protein after workouts…protein smoothie with about 35g.

Lol…sorry. I didn’t read this in time. Of course, just because I get a new PR doesn’t mean that you aren’t stronger than me.
Military Press
Decided to feel it out and try for a new max, or just do some heavier reps, depending. I ended up going for the max, as I didn’t have anything as far as reps. There is no way that the 5x5 would have gone. Too much fatigue.
I had wished for a higher PR. All things considered, I am grateful for a PR at all.
