Yeah I’m certainly glad to have those 5 months behind me!

I think this current bench routine is beating me down into fatigue, so I may listen to my body and switch to the the other one I’d been looking at. It was a good three weeks, and will definitely do the full 6 at a more energetic stage in the future.
Will keep the starting-strength-style squatting and deads going a bit longer though.

Right so I am now doing this Greg Robins program for bench:

He’s spoken about doing it in conjunction with 531, and just replacing the bench sets and reps with his. I will do something similar, except I’m going to be doing the 531 5’s Progression.

Monday
GR Bench Prog
OHP BBB sets and reps
Delts
Arms

Tuesday
Squat 531 5’s Progression
Good Mornings
Calves

Wednesday
GR Bench Prog
Bench Row
DB Press
Arms

Thursday
Rest

Friday
GR Bench Prog
OHP 531 5’s Progression
Dips
Chins

Saturday
Deadlift 531 5’s Progression
Squat 3 x 3 @ 70, 80, 90% from 531 Full Body
Calves

Sunday
Rest

…this gives me 14 weeks of programming. I may drop some of the BBB work if I get too fried. Normally I’d say this is too much work but remember I’m working with weights which 1 year ago were extremely light for me. Particularly deadlifts and squats. So while they may be difficult for me in a muscular sense, my CNS will be laughing at them.

…I can always adjust shit if I need to, but I am quite excited about this right now.

For ease of presentation, I will refer to this as Cycle 5. I did 3 cycles of 531, then three weeks of that random bench program + SS. So this can be Cycle 5.

Cycle 5 Week 1 Day 1
Greg Robins Bench + 531 5’s Progression
16-06-14

Bench (1 second pause)
5 x 67.5kg

Rear Delts

Curls
10 x 12.5kg Pair

10 x 12.5

This was pretty fun. I’ve entered my bench max at 105kg, which I feel is accurate.
I’ve never really paused before so perhaps I should have tested with a pause, but fuck it I’ll just see how I go.
TBH I don’t really like changing things up so often, but I have to listen to my body more than usual with this hideous fatigue I am experiencing lately. It’s all about keeping active and doing shit which I enjoy, not so much about the technicalities of whether I am being 100% sensible with my training.

All sounds sensible, I think people (myself included) are just impressed that you’ve been as consistent as you have, given how rough you must have felt sometimes. Jumping progs like you say is secondary at the mo to just getting in & doing it!

I actually really enjoy paused benching & when doing it regularly often feel stronger pressing that way.

Yeah I think I would consider it a massive failure if I didn’t at least get in the basement and attempt to hit some weights on every planned day. Being on chemo is shit, but it doesn’t stop me moving.
So how am I going to be tough enough to beat cancer if I am not tough enough to try to and stay active? This simple mindset keeps me motivated :). Plus I want my 'mirin arms back haha.

Funny you should say that, as I read a thread the other day where a number of lifters were saying their paused max is higher than unpaused, due to it forcing you to stay tight. Apparently you can train the muscles to retain stretch reflex energy longer over time, or something like that :-S.

Just a little note to anyone who ever suffers dehydration: Get Enerlyte. I have not suffered a single dizzy spell or dehydration issue since my oncology registrar prescribed it for me. Comes in a sachet which you mix with water. Tastes foul to begin with but now I’ve acquired the taste and crave my morning dose. Anyway, it’s good shit.

Cycle 5 Week 1 Day 2

10 x 45
10 x 50

Single Leg Calf Raise
15 x 20kg
15 x 20
15 x 20

WELL. Fatigue is at an all-time high, and I nearly quit this workout two sets into the squatting. I felt so weak I thought it would be dangerous to continue, as I could barely get my muscles to consciously fire. Really fucking weird sensation.

I thought hard about why these last two weeks have been so tough and the obvious answer is: Nozinan. It’s the anti nausea drug which the oncologist doubled a couple of weeks ago after my nausea took control of my eating ability. Somnolence and asthenia are listed as the main side effects of Nozinan, and they mean “state of near-sleep / strong desire for sleep” and “lack of muscle strength, malaise, dizziness, or fatigue” respectively.

Pretty much the exact opposite of what I want when trying to lift weights haha. So yeah, I feel less like a pussy now and more like a drugged out bear on his way to a long hibernation.

So tonight I will (without permission of course) reduce my dose by 50% and see if it helps. If the nausea flares up again, I will return to the higher dose on a day-by-day basis. The nausea SUCKS but it’s worse to not be able to move properly.

All hellish nightmares aside, it was a sweet workout. Lolz.

Cycle 5 Week 1 Day 3

Sweet, crippling fatigue is gone and enjoyment of life has returned :). Had a bit of nausea at lunch time but it’s a lot better than the alternative!

Haha, sweet track! I am actually a huge fan of Ministry (I’m guessing you know 1000 Homo DJs is a side project of theirs)

haha yah, cause their producer said “it would take 1000 homo dj’s playing this before someone would buy 1 album” or something like that.

Ive been on multiple anti nausea meds for an undiagnosed illness I had awhile back. If you want I could look back at some of the better ones they game me that might not have as serious side effects. Some of them they said were used on chemo patients as well. Idk the name off the top of my head but the best one I used was a small patch that lasted about 2 days. No side effects and helped with nausea.

Actually bro that would be much appreciated. I only discovered the dehydration powder through the comment of a random person, and honestly that has kept me out of hospital.

Today went well. I was positive throughout it and finished feeling invigorated.

Had a meeting with the Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer researchers today, had to give a family tree and history of cancer etc. My Father’s Father died of bowel cancer so there’s a clear link in my family, sadly.

Anyway I was pleased to know my sisters should be fine, but my daughter does need testing when she’s 21-ish. They usually test ten years earlier than the relative’s diagnosis age.

I’ve been feeling very positive the past few days, focusing on what I’ve learned through this experience and thinking about where I want to take my life from here. Despite being on chemo, I can feel the invigoration of a non-cancerous body returning to me and fuck I can’t wait to fully embrace it in… 56 days.

so I couldn’t help but peruse your log here. Very inspiring.

I just wanted to ask if you are familiar with the benefits of a keto diet when dealing with cancer. Apparently cancer cells can only utilize glucose as their energy source for their metabolic process and on the keto diet you starve these cells of glucose and can halt their progression and even lead to their death,

Please take a look:

I can find you the primary literature if you wanted but I am not sure how I would copy and paste since it is in a database that you need membership to access. At least the ones I get through my university. Anyways good luck and keep kicking ass.
