Lifting in a Rams Head

Awesome stuff going on in here Sir.

Dude, Ogre thanks very much I appreciate it!

This will be my 4th day in a row training, I generally don’t do this. I feel surprisingly decent.

Front Squat - 135x2x10, 225x5x3

In light of the upcoming Noreaster in the NYC area, Im happy I go this done

Looks like a real solid session Matty. Hopefully the storm doesn’t end up quite as bad as what some are predicting.

Hope you’re not buried in ice and snow-train on good man.

Nice work Matty. You guys are getting slammed with crap weather.

At our age I’ll take surprisingly decent any day! Hope you didn’t get too slammed with the snow. We got about a foot in DC and my shoulder and groin did not like shoveling out.

Thanks all! The snow has been absolute nuisance!!! Getting hit every few days expecting another few inches today…not much but not allowing the other snow to melt and dissipate…

I decided to cancel my gym membership yesterday. I will still be training there until the end of March but after the 3rd incident I had with management Ive decided to end it before I do something I regret. Yesterday I came close to reverting to my knucklehead days after being berated by an assistant manager. Its all about the approach with me, if you treat me like an equal and with respect and simple courtesy I am generally willing to bend over backwards to make the conflict come to an amicable conclusion for both of us.

However I do not care how tough you are, or if you are a ju jitsu master or super duper tough guy I am a person that hates to feel embarrassed and belittled. I came very close to basically telling the guy enough is enough and lets go outside so I can beat the shit of you. When I am at this point, its time to move on.

Fuck sorry to hear about the gym issues. When I hear shit like that it makes me very glad that I put something together at home. Plenty of downsides to home gym approach as well but not having to deal with idiots as well as the convenience makes it worthwhile in my opinion.

Dude, what did the guy do? You can’t leave us hanging like that. I couple months ago I got off early from work and went to my gym in the afternoon. Normally I’m there first thing in the morning. I was in the middle of a squat workout and my phone rang. It was an important call I needed to field for work.

I never talk, text, or screw around with my phone at the gym. I hate those people. I knew this call was coming, and I needed to answer it. About 20 second into my conversion some young guy who works there (who I’ve never seen before in my life) comes over. He says, “We’re kind of busy today, how long are you going to talk?” I gave him the death stare for about another 30 seconds and said, “I’ll talk until I’m done.” The little guy then turned and walked away. He never has talked to me again.

Fuck yeah Crippler!

Well the story goes…

Lol, this has been a bone of contention for a while. Frankly I try my hardest to clean up after myself, re-rack my weights and be a pretty gregarious nice person. I also flush the toilet after I shit, and decide not to short circuit steam room by pouring water over an electric heater lol. There is alot wrong with my gym and a lot of it has to do with the members who are filthy self entitled scumbags. I make a point to be pleasant, my father always said its nice to be nice. I have been a member there for 7 years and have made quite a few friends and am generally well liked.

With that being said I expect the same courtesy and respect I give others. 98% of the time I do. I have called people about re-racking their weights, taken younger kids under my wing and helped train them and guide them into PLing. Members joke that the corner I am in 95% of the time is my corner right next to the power rack. So suffice to say its my little piece of PL heaven among the brotards. It is the only area I use chalk, its the only area I pull, squat and bench. the 15 guys that Power Lift all go there and its expected that chalk is used.

Nowhere in the contract that I signed does it state that chalk cannot be used.

The first incident, is when a district manager type, an individual (I’m guessing) When mid squat (with 400+ lbs on my back) asks me if this is my chalk. I admit I kind of lost my shit a bit (nothing crazy). I told him he really needs to use a little more common sense when talking to someone in the middle of the rep. Now this wasn’t a person who looked like he never seen a weight before, he was in shape, big and simply a guy who lifts. I told him not to touch my property, he stated that there have been complaints about chalk use and I cannot use it.

I explained to him, with cursing involved that it never stated in the contract I signed that chalk use was prohibitied. I said its not like I am using Anthrax or some noxious chemical. I told him if in my contract it states that I cannot use chalk I will cancel my membership. He then went on to say and I quote…“just because its not in the contract it doesn’t mean its not allowed.” I basically said you sound ridiculous, and it seems like you trying to enforce a rule ex-post facto. I went on to say instead of worrying about me, a courteous member, worry about the other members who could give a fuck about this place…it was a scene, I was speaking loudly, and I regret it…somewhat.

Second issue dealt with dropping weights…I was doing Pendlay Rows, and doing Pendlay rows correctly you will have some dropping of the barbell. The assistant ops manager came up to me, and spoke to me like a gentleman, and said there has been complaints about the noise I am making. He then said something hiarious.

“I know about powerlifting, I played football.” (wut)

But I digress, He asked me to place mats on the floor when I do Pendlays, NO PROBLEM.

Come to this past week, I was doing deads, using chalk, the same Powerlifter, football player, armed with other employees (henchmen) kinda cornered me in my corner and said to stop using chalk. The henchmen were trying to diffuse the situation and being ok, but I felt like this fucker was fucking with me, I just kept saying, Im going to use chalk, Im going to use chalk, Im going to use chalk (you get the idea) he kept saying you cant, you cant etc. Just last week we were cordial, and now hes trying to make an example. Thankfully in my older age I stopped myself before I did something stupid and basically said, ok I will cancel my membership when Im done today. I think he was surprised at this, and the other guys he was with asked me not to do it, but I am a man of my word.

Sorry for the long response

Today…no issues lol

My buddy ran down one of the employees, who just said, “There’s nothing we can do.” Meanwhile they just posted gym crap on the walls about being a good member.

Well Crippler at least its just not me! Misery loves company.

Matty that sucks about the gym , can’t say I am surprised. This is why I really don’t lift very often at public gyms. You are a good guy and I think you should look for a closed gym along the Gym Jones style. I have been invited several times to closed gyms each time I feel right at home among the members there,( its almost like going to church everybody is so serious) I have been asked if I would like to join at the end of the session.

Each time I have passed mainly due to me being a cheap bastid. That and I have invested a lot in my home box. Back to private gyms there are some cheaper ones , the experience at most of them is second to none. Hope you look around and find something better.

The managers at your gym are completely irrational when it comes to serious lifting and all they care about is catering to the general public that don’t train seriously. The bottom line is making money and just like all the Barney gyms(Planet Fitness etc.) the true lifter is not appreciated or tolerated. They claim no judgement but all they do is judge. Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Hope you will find better iron to lift. Stay strong.

I wish there were around my parts Dude. Im going to look again, there are a few in NJ but its gonna involve tolls and more travelling. I may join one to have an option to go to on days where it will be chalk heavy lol. The NYSC that I may be joining from what I here is chalk friendly and has a lot more equipment that is heavy lifting friendly.
