Openers tomorrow and then thats all she wrote

Good luck Matty! Looking forward to hearing about the meet.

Thanks brother! I am going to attempt my openers tomorrow, as long as work does not interfere.

Take this for what its worth Matty but with all of the volume you have been doing there is no need to test your openers tomorrow. Your prep work for the meet has been solid and your fighting some minor injuries, rest up until meet day and kill it.

I thought about that Dave, its always a precarious week for me before the meet. I prefer to do something rather then nothing, because I like to grease the groove so to speak, but I also don’t want to over do it. I deferred to Mike on this and he wanted me to do openers 5-6 days out and then warmups 2-3 days out. I did my openers today…meh it was ok…

Openers:

Squat -Worked up slowly to my opening Squat of 380, it was easy but I was not used to my wraps, which felt like uncomfortable. But no real issues…I am thinking of going 380, 420 440?

Bench - Couldn’t find my sweet spot, but it didnt matter much 320 felt fine, Though I think I am going to open with 315, 330 340?

Dead - This sucked…again, I am stiff legging the fuck out of my deads, 500 felt heavy, but I am still going with 500, 520 530?

Question marks on the last attempts as that all depends on the other lifts.

Mike knows a hell of a lot more than I do.

I doubt it makes much difference the only one I would be hesitant on is deadlifting opener five days out. What day is the meet?

One other question, your squat and bench attempts make sense to me but your only going up around 5% from your first pull to your last, did Mike suggest the openers? Wondering what the thought process is in starting so close to the max lift?

Yeah I agree Dave, that was one lift I was very hesitant with, espescially when I have been struggling with it of late. The meet is sunday

As much volume as you do I’m sure you will be fine.

You are going to kill it. Now rest, eat, get your mind right and post up the triumphant videos.

The hardest part may be relaxing before you get all psyched up for Sunday. We will all be rooting for you.

Thanks guys…here goes nothin

What about doing what Wendler suggests for attempts. 85% of your third attempt for your opener, 91.5% for your second, then your third.

Not sure I like it TBH, as ultimately I want to break my total from last meet, going by this protocol, everything would ride on the third attempt, and If I were to get redlighted, on my third attempt my total would be extremely low.

Personally I like to break a PR on the second attempt and go for broke on the third.

I always thought it was 87-92% for your opener then 102-105% for your second(depending on how you feel), and finally go for a new PR on the third. Guess it depends on the day of lifting and what you are ready to do. Make sure you get your opener and then blast-off time.

2 steps forward 1 step back

Meet Write Up…WNPF NJ States

Squat - Wow warmups as usual sucked joints felt like they were made of sandpaper. Anywho really tried to warmup to coincide with my first attempt, which was relatively easy because no one wants to squat anymore.

Attempt 1 380 3 Whites - No real issues very comfortable with the monolift at this point…a little pitching forward but no big deal.
Attempt 2 420 3 Whites - Felt better than the 380 went up quickly, good speed on the descent.
Attempt 3 430 No Lift - Fucked myself on this one, because quite frankly I was too deliberate and methodical on the descent which negated the bounce out of the hole that I like to get. No bothered too much because I know what to correct. +20 PR.

Bench - Warmups felt great, shoulders warm, comfortable with the Forza bench, the warmup bar had one set of power rings similar to the bars at my gym. EVERYONE wants to bench seriously I was in the 3rd flight, I was waiting around for over an hour for my first attempt. On top of that a false fire alarm went off which elongated my wait time.

Attempt 1 315 3 Whites - Damn, something is not right, weight went up ok a little shaky, that dreaded bar with power rings all over the place dropped the bar to high on my chest but no other issues.
Attempt 2 330 No Lift - You have got to be kidding me. Weight felt ok, Bar hit a wall mid lift. WHAT THE FUCK!
Attempt 3 330 No Lift - See Above.

Fucking rattled because of this. How can I miss a weight that I consistently and easily hit at the gym? This happened to me before 2 meets ago. Last time I got face fucked by bench it was because of hand placement this was not the issue this time. My wife showed me the video and for some reason I did something on both fails that I never ever did in my life when I bench. For some reason on each lift I raised my head off the bench and watched the bar hit my chest and pressed with my head off the bench. Why did I do this, I have no other explanation on failing twice on a weight that I easily and consistently hit at the gym. - 10 from previous Bench total of 325.

Deads - I was rattled, disappointed and just didnt feel like lifting anymore. I had to get my mind right. It was hot and uncomfortable in the back room at this point. More of real long waiting around, warmed up slowly, tried to stay loose, lots of foam rolling, LAX ball beating lol. Warming up on a thick bar. 405 felt like shit, 455 felt like 800…uh oh.

Attempt 1 500 3 Whites - Different bar, thinner. 500 felt like it should have easy. Confidence still not there.
Attempt 2 520 3 Whites - Flew up, felt like 315. I like powerlifting again.
Attempt 3 540 2 Whites - A grinder, but I NEEDED THIS to salvage my day. Let out a big scream and a fist pump for this. FUCK YES.

An uneven meet, but this is correctable. Made dumb mistakes on the bench and the last squat attempt. Even with the bench retardedness I added 40 lbs to my total 1275…all in all lessons learned. Vids to come today

Good job Matty!

Squat and DL PR’s in the same meet is solid. 540 leaves me with some catching up to do!
Looking forward to the videos.

You did well Matty. It’s all about increasing your totals and that’s exactly what you did.

james

Great start!

Every once in a while I do this too and I have no f-ing idea why. It’s only on the heavy sets. I would understand if I had boobs and wanted to watch them jiggle when the bar hit, but that only works when my wife benches… Other than that, no clue why I do this either.

The reality is, you know you can hit the weight. Bring that experience into practice for your next meet and you’ll kill it.

Your anger and served you well! In all seriousness, it takes a great deal of mental fortitude to re-compose yourself once you’re that frustrated. That’s a massive lift and you should feel nothing but pride in your performance.

Awesome job brotha! Looking forward to watching the lifts!

Excellent job, great deadlift! Waiting for vids…

Awesome job! I hate those extended waits and delay…they really screw up your groove. I’ll bet you’d of hit at least one of those benches if it hadn’t been for all the crap in between. Nice work on the deads and squats too. I bet you’ll go over 1300 the next meet.
