Lifting for Strength in an Endurance Sport

every halfway decent gym has a C2 erg these days, but beyond ooga-boogaing your way through a 2k as part of a brutal WOD there’s an entire world of high-performance endurance athletes that row as their primary sport (this post is also relevant to collegiate rowing but I’m mostly thinking of folks that are cranking out 90-180’ of rowing per day on the water or on the erg)

it’s a funky sport, especially for small athletes, because you want to maximise your power to weight ratio. part of that is definitely technique, but the other half (that is frequently forgotten) is an effective lifting plan that builds raw strength in the lower body, core, and shoulder girdle (3-4 sessions a week to be done in addition to 10-ish endurance sessions).

longtime listener first time caller: was wondering if there were any existing plans floating around this site that might be suited to such a training plan, and if not, whether anyone who knows their shit might be interested in weighing in (pun intended).

I really like clean & jerks, and did them often for a prolonged period. The relevance here is that even in a cardiac rehab setting, I had really good rowing ability on an ERG.

So I’d say, C&J for explosive speed & strength. However it fits in to a plan.
