Leg Extensions

Coach,

I have been talking to many Physical therapists and they all say that the Leg ext is terrible for the knee joint because it places it under so much torque because of the pad placement on the tib/fib… what are your thoughs on this?

Yet many physical therapist use the same leg extension in many of their knee rehab protocol…

I’m not saying that the leg extension is harmless… any exercise has its potential risk. To me, a limited use of the leg extension is fine. I wouldn’t use it that much in a program, but I don’t see any problem in using it from time to time.

the difference though CT, is in a rehab setting the load is usually really light, so I would assume the stress wouldn’t be too bad.

I do agree with your stance, as in I will utilize it from time to time. But, I’m not going to give it to a client (then again I don’t work with BBers)

For anyone other than BBers or rehab it’s pretty pointless. PTs also tell you that having the knee go past the toe is bad and squating atg is bad, etc. Remember, a PTs job isn’t to improve your performance. Many of the things BBers and athletes do are counter to musculoskeletal health.

Alan

I’ve started doing some leg extensions to strengthen one quad. I’m almost 2 years post acl surgery and i just can’t get my one quad stronger with squats, step-ups, lunges. I think other muscles are taking over although Thib’s tip about lifting your non-working legs toe off the ground for ste-ups is helping.

I can only do about 20-30lbs on the stack for leg extensions on my surgery leg, but can squat 505 for a triple. So I’m gonna give it some focused work with extensions and see if it improves.

Wow, we have some interesting responses. I’ll refer to this article by Eric Cressey ( Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION ). He explains things very clearly so you can make your own decision. And, by the way all PTs are not total dumbasses as has been implied here. Some are actually forward thinking professionals that are happy to help improve your performance. It’s just like any other profession. You have good doctors, mechanics, coaches, and some that aren’t so good…

Would have been a perfect first post except for the ending…

Where exactly was this implied? In which post(s)?

Come on now was your comment and words of wisdom really necessary? Are you sure?

1.) Did it help the OP or answer his question?

2.) Do you think we are all idiots that haven’t recognized and/or acknowledged that the world is indeed filled with both winners and losers?

So in you own words: You have good posters and some that aren’t so good… get my point?

“Post less, read more”

I haven’t always agreed with and/or practiced this mantra myself but in your case it might just be sound advice.

Your link was good though.

Respects. Ricochet Out!

So point me in the right direction since it appears that doing knee extensions is stupid.

I guess I should go for a more quad dominant style of squatting, close stance, front squat, etc.

Do you not lift more on the leg extension due to pain or lack of strength? Could it be a mental issue where you are leery of injuring the leg again so you subconsciously wont go higher on the weight? I would suggest that you go lighter for longer if it is not pain.

Also, damn if you can do 505 on the triples then just forget the leg extension all together.

Lack of strength… doing 30 pounds on the leg extension and struggling is kind of depressing. It doesn’t hurt, but does make some fun sounds. I suppose that’s due to the cartlidge damage.

I think maybe focusing on front squats will help. I’m trying to do lots of step-ups with just the one leg to bring it up to par and that seems to be helping a bit too.

My overall strength is pretty decent with squat 505x3 and deadlift at about 500x8… but it still seems like in single leg stuff my left leg is way behind.
