Cbear: I love that you’re running. I’m sorry that you’re hurting. It does sound like shin splints. THat’s not an injury I have ever had to deal with so I’m not sure what to advise. Check your shoes is always a safe bet. Make sure you’re running in something suitable for your biomechanics–high arches, flat feet, pronate, supinate, blah blah blah.
Back looks awesome by the way. And I loved your video. So strong. Massive, massive progress you have made!
Could be shin splints but could just be that your tibialis is getting more exercise than it’s used to. Ice + foam roll - you know the drill.
And pic is good, even sideways.
thanks for all the help. so these are shin splints, eh? makes me feel like a real pussy. heard about em, never had it happen to me.
but really, what do i expect after 4 years of no cardio besides hill sprints? (occasionally)
im getting all kinds of advice, and of course i dont want to take any of it that involves slowing down or backing off. grrrr.
TODAY AT EFS-
molly suggested i do 100 reps on the power squats. did 10x10, and i didnt get any kind of lb pr, but i did get an 80 rep pr. HAHAHAHAHA! holy shit son. i shouldve guessed.
also did some hip thrusters on the machine (bw only) some reverse hypers, and some back raises.
TONIGHT-
feels weird to not be avoiding homework. so ive done a fuckton of laundry, and have almost all of it folded/put away.
making nana’s sour cream cookies. instead of using her butter icing, i made the filling for a pumpkin roll, but a little thicker. went so far as to make red and green icing- both have vanilla, red has maple in it, also.
i need a guinea pig. may take some over to moms. theyre fat and dont care, why not?
also may bring some to the gym tomorrow.
have “a christmas story” on repeat.
but really, feels weird not having homework. started reading again. “Pygmy.” oh how i missed Chuck.
I know what you mean. I got all next term’s lesson plans out of the way last weekend so now I have no work to think about over Christmas. Feels…odd. Oh and if you can just send those cookies to England…
Alright, I have 4 left, 2 of each. Send me addresses and theyre in the mail asap.
MIM- I don’t know if it makes me feel like the holidays, because holidays in my family involve so much alcohol and rivalry and bitching that its a circle. those loops, from biology… one causes the other causes the other…
but only if the extended family is around. the seven of us, and our spouses/SO’s, are fine, except for Tumor (if i haven’t mentioned her, shes worth her own post. let me know.)
It’s been a long time since the 7 of us have had our own time, and I’m being proactive this weekend. I’ll be at either Jason’s or Kirk’s for Christmas. Lifting on saturday, working on Monday. part of me feels a little strange not toughing it out, not being the bigger person and ignoring what shouldnt matter, but the amount that i don’t want to be there is palatable in the way that you can taste an awful smell.
Either I’ll enjoy being this selfish, or I’ll regret it later. Won’t know unless I try.
ok. ran tonight for the first time in awhile. right after work, lil bit of a chest cold ish, havent been to the gym in a week ish, so I wasnt expecting much at all.
i was fucking amazed.
each “lap” is 1/4 mile, the indoor track i used is 1/8 mile per lap but i did 2’s every time.
walk- 4:00:6
run- 2:07:8
walk- 4:17:6
run- 2:04:5
walk- 4:07:9
run- 2:05:7
walk- 4:14:2
run- 2:05:1
walk- 4:30:4
so I wasnt really planning on being “able” to do more than 1 run. I ran properly (no heel strike, chest up) and never felt my shins. or the arches of my feet, until after i stopped. shins are still peachy and arches are back to normal.
after the first, though, i thought, “fuck it, im not dead yet.” and after the second, “why the fuck not?” and after the third, “are you fucking kidding me? yeah i am.” and after the fourth, “I better stop or i’m gonna do something really, really stupid.”
so it turned out pretty well. walked a bit more after the last timed walk, and it ended up taking me about a half hour, and the wheezing didnt start till the very end of the last walk.
not sure how to progress. I’ll meditate and listen to myself/the voices… theyre usually not wrong. of course, i’ll consider suggestions if theyre offered.
I think i didnt have as much pain bc i ran correctly… pretty sure i did the heel strike shuffle for the test. ugh. i know better.
i’m wearing frees, not sure which ones. i’d be in vibrams if i had the sprints, but i have just the classics, and the test is outdoors, so i may as well train in what i’ll test. rite?
nothin today/tonight for training, but i get to lift in the morning!! I miss EFS!!
Hey CBear. I know your shins aren’t bothering you as much anymore BUT when I used to run a lot( I don’t anymore because I’m trying to get gigggg) I developed shin splints do to shitty “running” shoes.
Your best bet is to go into a runners shoe store and ask any of the sales associate to help you with a sneaker which is made for your foot, they will know by just looking at your foot or by asking you for symptoms of discomfort and pain. Trust me, you will never feel pain again, at least not from running ;).
Or just run in minimal shoes using Pose method. There have been studies showing that the more expensive and motion-correcting the shoe, the more likely the chance of injury. I had significantly fewer problems after switching from a Nike Shox shoes designed for over-pronators (which I am) to Nike Frees. I aim to make a full transition to my Vibrams once I start running again.

Could you show mee those studies. Not that it would make a difference in my opinion as I think running in vibrams is a pretty bad idea unless youre running on sandl/dirt where the foot can take its natural positions do to the soft surface. Running shoes are a must for people running in pavement, concrete, tracks, treadmiills etc but I guess it also depends on how much you’re running as I was running close To 30 miles per week and the thought of doing it with vibrams makes me cringe, ouch!
I’ve seriously thought about the running shoe idea, but i know it depends on a lot, and most of it is my ignorance on the subject of running- i’d like to make my body do what its supposed to do, without corrective gear. sometimes, i know this can’t be done (orthodontics? lol) But if i can keep running correctly and do it well, i’d like to do that.
i’ve almost never run with a heel strike, and almost always been problem free.
cal- even on my indoor, rubbery track I’ve been practicing, I still cringe a little at the vibrams. i’ll cherish that little bit of padding i have for now. ha! till i end up with some sprints, that is!
