LOL, I think I’m turning into one of those.
I went to see a client yesterday and she tells me that my head is smaller. I lost weight from my head. Then the other office wench is like your sooooo skin-nnyy. I wanted to smash them both. I’m sure they both aspire to sharp collar bones and forearms larger than their biceps.

You know, they are lying worldwide. I do contract work for a pretty big name fashion fashion house and the place is littered with mags from everywhere. U.A.E Hello!, British Vogue, etc. etc. Aside from the inevitable Angelina and Britney that appear in all those mags, the body image from India to Saudi Arabia and beyond is the Hollywood starving look.
And this is the same office where a girl asked if I am training for the olympics since I do OL. Coincidence?
She was complaining about stiff shoulders. I asked her if she knew that her nose entered the room before any other part of her body, simply due to bad posture. LOL, scared the crap out of her, but not enough to do anything about it. I’m working for them next week so I get to torment her some more. The joys of temp work evil laugh

Today I learned that flying asphalt shingles are as deadly as ninja stars. Very windy, roofer is coming tomorrow, Mark is freaking out. We knew the roof had to be fixed, but I was hoping for a little more time…
I went to the gym in case the roof blew off or something, I didn’t want to be home. Roof is still there (-:
Workout 9/01/07-at gym
Incline bench
15x45, 12x55, 10x60
Bench
12x55, 10x60, 10x60
OK, I’m no power lifter but it struck me to arch my back some and use my feet…hmm wonder where I got that from…did some more
8x65, 5x70
It worked! The weight felt much easier. I was a bit nervous to do a real bench press alone, but if I felt more confident or had a spotter I could have done more weight.
Pull-ups assisted
3x10x80lbs
Narrow Pull down
20x60, 15x60, 10x70
BB Curl
15x20, 12, 10x30
I was supposed to do Scott Curls, but they hurt my sticky elbow so I didn’t do them.
30 minutes elliptical
When I got home it was still windy so I told Mark I wanted to go get a steak. He said why don’t you cook one. I said if you clear a path to the BBQ, then I will.
We went out for steak. I am a brat.

That stinks about your roof. We have received a ton of snow. So hubby has had to clear the snow and ice off the roof several times. A real pain in the butt. Now with all the warm weather we have flooding:(
I get at least 10 or 15lbs from using my legs when benching. Make sure you take a deep breath at the top:)

The standard of beauty in China is so skinny. There’s a woman at my gym who often works out at the same time as me. She was incredibly thin when I first saw her and I was pretty shocked to see her just get skinnier and skinnier over the past 8 months, like she is wasting away to nothing.
She works with a trainer who has her lifting very light weights (at most 5 lbs.) for somewhat high reps and she also spends a lot of time resting and talking to him. She does bodyweight squats above parallel while holding onto a bar for balance. Her training was just disturbing to me and I kept wanting to ask her about it but I’m shy and it would be kind of weird to question her methods in front of her trainer.
So I finally just decided that she must be a model or actress and she has to look like a stick for her livelihood. Sometimes I catch her watching me deadlift or do overhead squats and I wonder what she thinks…probably wondering why the hell I would want to be bigger and stronger. After all, women are supposed to be frail, weak creatures who need men to take care of them…right?

Hey Claire, yes it does stink, but seeing the news today, we are in good shape. There was a lot of damage from that storm. Some of the small towns to the east have had major flooding. I wish MsM was still around, I hope she’s OK out there in Restigouche, this winter has been tough so far.
I was surprised how good those lifts felt. I could have gone higher, I think maybe up to 90lbs for 1RM. But I lack the confidence to try without a spotter. The problem at this gym is everyone works with a trainer, no one works in teams.
My coach has 2 clients that pay him basically just to spot. He doesn’t write their programs or anything, just spots on the heavy lifts. But like he told me today, just ask one of the guys, they are usually more than happy to help girls (-;

OL Day, I was sore before I got to the gym, my pecs hurt for the first time in ages!
10/01/07
Synchro Snatch
3x10 little bar warmup
3x10x40lbs
Eric is not happy, too slow, too far away from the body x20 with the stick
3x10x40
Much better, so 3x10x45
I think I get it now, we’ll see…
Synchro is 2 jumps, from the hip to overhead, split second pause and then back down to the hip, no pause or he yells at me.
Alt. Split Snatch
3x12x40
3x12x40
3x12x45
Floor jump and snatch
This is where you start with the bar at your ankles, hold it and jump, return to the floor, then a half second to bring it to the hips and a split second to bring the bar from hip to overhead. This is really helping to improve my speed, I felt that today. But I hit my nose with the bar and my knees with the bar a few times.
3x12x35
Floor jump and clean, same as above but ending in the clean position (bar at the neck, elbows pointing out)
3x12x35
3x12x45
3x12x50
Floor jumps from full squat 3x12-to relax, Eric says.
There is not a lot of weight being thrown around in this session, but it kills me. It’s like an hour of metabolic blasting and after the hour and 20 minutes today I was exhausted. All the weight is up 5 lbs over last week (this is the second week of the program) I see a trend here, next week will be more weight. With the speed he expects, it’s going to get HARD.
I just got Beta-7, it’s supposed to help with endurance, anyone ever try it?

Saan, it’s a sick world!
There is a little, and I do mean little, maybe 100lbs, chinese girl who o-lifts at my gym. She puts me to shame. She uses the big olympic bar and I’ve seen her do a 80 lb snatch, but she looks like a strong wind would blow her over.

if you are wiped out at the end of this then its enough weight! I’ve heard o lifting grows exponentially…once you’ve got your form down perfect the weight just goes up. Its all about the muscle memory of the movement. Keep it up girl

LOL that is true.
I’m getting there, but must be patient. I learned patience from having my daughter, but I need a refresher course on how to be patient with weights!

Now that is sick, in good way. Relative strength is cool. I’d love to see the little Chinese women at my gym lifting like that. But I personally want to look like I lift weights! I told a woman I met on vacation a couple of weeks ago that I wanted to learn Olympic lifting soon and she said “honey, you have a long way to go!” I clarified that I didn’t mean I was trying to go to the Olympics but I got the message–I don’t look very strong…yet.

I tried to PM MsM but it doesn’t look like she is around anymore. I hope she is okay:( We have it pretty tough right now. They had to close our ski mountain because of flooding.
Definitely ask for a spot. Even if you only do one set with a spotter. I had to spot someone squatting 405lb today. It is part of being a member of a gym.

I’m sure you will. Genetics are a funny thing to deal with though. I hope they are on your side!
My genes seem to be like my Mom’s, small frame, long muscles. And fat in the middle! Well, not so much anymore, but when I carry it, that’s where it goes. One day I’ll have to test myself and see how much muscle I could actually put on.

Hi Claire,
You would think that spotting comes from being a gym member. That’s the problem with my gym. It’s the very rare individual who actually will take the time to help out. I saw one guy ask another guy for a spot and he told him to get a trainer!
But that’s the way they set thing ups there: with about 15 companies operating inside the gym with no one on the gym’s payroll. Leads to a very “do it yourself or pay for it” attitude. Also leads to a lot of members who are very knowledgeable, basic gym membership does not even offer a program to start with unless it is 100% machines.
There is a separate area with all machines from the “real” weight room. So the guys (90% of the clientele) in the weight room do know their stuff. They just don’t have the culture of helping out.
My old gym was better for this because all the trainers were employed by the gym, not self employed. They would monitor things, put weights away, so the stuff that is expected. But that gym has no olympic program.
When my membership is up this fall I might just switch back, it’s closer to home as well. It will all depend on whether I think that continuing with o-lifts has any sort of future and if it’s still fun for me.
Which ski hill are you close to? NH has some good ones!

Last August I was looking at joining a new gym after I moved. I filled out this little “what are your goals” sheet and waited to speak with a trainer and get a tour of the gym. She glanced over the paper I filled out and then proceeded to take me to the cardio room and talk about all the great programs they offer because “you look like you prefer cardio, I’m sure you don’t lift heavy.” Apparently the box that I checked that said “I want to add more strength and muscle” meant that I prefer cardio. I was so angry I told her that her gym wasn’t the place for me and walked out on her.

It sounds like you have a great trainer so it might be worth staying at that gym.
We ski at Crotched mountain. Not a big mountain but it has a good terrain park and is only 35-40 minutes away. The kids can take the school bus to the mountain. They spend all their time on the jumps and rails. They scare the crap out of me. Especially my middle son who loves to do front flips on the jumps.
There are some great mountains not too far from where we live but we have not been to many of them. Seems like a lot of work with 4 kids. My hubby wants to take a ski trip to Colorado. I not too thrilled with the idea.
