Think of it like a bank. Your patience will be rewarded. So you may have a belly. Boo hoo. Money in the bank, buddy. It’s the only way you’ll guarantee yourself that you’re eating over maintenance and grow muscle. Losing the fat is easy compared to building muscle.

In a year, you’ll come back and thank us.
I’m afraid that food is a bad thing today. People think bulking means FATTY. Damn!
It took me 2 years to gain 25-30 lbs of pure muscle.
It took me 2 months to shed 15-20 lbs of fat.
Just eat HARD and Train HARD…don’t overthink shit.
You have just put on the only smile on my face today.
In the past 8 months, I went from an obese (but strong) 5’9 285 pounder, to 165 lbs (3 weeks ago) (using my idea of what was low-carb). 120 lb weight loss. Sounds good right? NOT! MY ARMS ARE twigs now, and i still have that “tub of chub” sitting at my waist, and a bunch of loose skin on top of that everywhere.
I’ve realized that I’ll have to suffer the bigger and fatter look to gain some muscle (I just don’t want to go over 200 pounds, I weigh around 182 right now, and I’m a skinny fat person. I’ve decided to give the anabolic diet a try, yet I hear from lowcarbmuscle.com that ketosis can be very catabolic. (maybe in a calorie deficit, but what about a calorie surplus?).
I know i’ve lost tons of muscle (arms are twigs, and still no six pack even after 120 lb. weight loss). I didn’t do any weight training while losing all the weight, and now I’ve picked that up, and dropped the cardio and limited only to 10 minutes before my workout sessions.
I need to regain at least 30 pounds of muscle before I try to lose the weight again (maybe with a more moderate carb-cycling approach, instead of induction type lowcarbing for 6 months straight).
Whenever I go on a carb binge, I swell up and my belly inflates like a 18wheeler’s tire. It’s disgusting. I want muscle. I need it. Badly.
Sure, but when you start out overfat, the prospect of adding more fat (even with muscle) sounds a little counterproductive. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m doing this to look better. I trust what you are saying, it’s just hard to wrap my head around the idea of intentionally putting on some fat.
Great. What about when you start out with an extra 60 pounds of fat? I don’t want to wait 2 years to look good.
Yeah I can eat like a maniac and I love to train hard, but the overthinking is a bitch!

<<< The problem for us noobs is all the conflicting information out there. The advise to read everything out there is great, but sometimes it’s completely overwhelming. For example,on this site alone, I’ve read:
You CAN’T gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously.
You CAN gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously.
Add in the fact that a lot of us start our path to weight lifting through magazines like Men’s Health, etc. It’s no wonder we are confused. Until I found this site I was under the impression that it was always better to lose fat before worrying about muscle gain. I’ve also read that one set of 8-12 reps twice a week is enough for a beginner. Fortunately, I have found my way to this site. My point is, try to be patient with us noobs. Obviously we don’t know what we are talking about, that’s why we’re asking.
Thanks for all the great advice.
Noobs with your attitude we have all the patience in the world for. I wish I had more time this morning to answer further.

Just lift correctly, you’ll find you will look better overall. Any basic lifting program will help you if you haven’t been lifting before. May not be the case for you but I would steer clear of the advanced programs alot of them will have a beginner saying F this after 2 weeks. Look for a good 3 - 4 weeks before you see any progress, and as far as looking good higher then 7 rep ranges will make you look better faster by summer. Which is damn near here already.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys,i followed what u all said and i am clean bulking now for 2 weeks so far and following rippetoe’s starting str which is goin very well, ive gained about 1.5 lbs so far in 2 weeks…

Well there they are not impressive @ all lol,im goin light right now so i can get my form down 100% on everything…
Just don’t get the flaming of ignorant and mindless people get to you.
Flames like:
You look fat
When are you gonna work on the shape of your muscles?
Let me see your abs!!!
You should work with more reps to get some shape and definition on those muscles
I like John’s look better, he has abs and that huge chest and biceps. (John 130 lbs pink dumbell user)
Just stick with your goal, be smart, dont let anyone tell u what to do or how to do it (Look for advice here) and when you achieve your goal than mostly be satisfied about your self and not just to prove something to people around you.

Dont be afraid to put more weight on the bar
Yea,i know i could handle a bit more weight but i wanna focus on my form right now…
I’d swap 12 egg whites for 6 whole eggs. Just remember. Muscle is conceived in the gym, gestates in your stomach and is born while you rest, so to speak.
Your diet will probably work out better for you if you put a little more weight on the bar… i understand the good form thing but there is no reason to be rowing just 20 lbs less than you deadlift…
