Laying Down Between Sets of Squats?

just coming off a back injury. tried squatting today and there was no more pain.

however, my lower back felt tight lying down, like it was being compressed together bigtime and the act of lying down was decompressing the spine.

if i had just sat down or kept standing, i would have felt completely normal. i only felt the sensation when i was lying down.

what do you guys think? normal? or no?

If I miss a one rep max sq/dl I usually do the same thing, for the same reason. SO probably yes.

Don’t lie down then

that’s not the point, i want to know if it’s normal or not. do healthy people get this sensation as well? i don’t wanna get back to training until i’m 100%.

I do.
Try some spinal deloading. Hang from a pull up bar or something and relax your waist completely. The first time i do it for about 30 seconds after my initial squat set. Then i do for 10 seconds after 2nd and 3rd set.

However i usually do this when my form suffers. For example my hips might raise too fast and cause me to lean a bit forward. This puts extra stress on my lower back since it transforms a part of the squat and turns it into a partial good morning.
Check your form.

You don’t want to do the hanging thing for too long or else you’ll induce ligamentous creep in your spine.

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this advice. Any particular reason for laying down? Are you putting up some big powerlifting numbers or working more on aesthetic goals?

It seems like laying down would send blood going to your legs and lower back to your head instead. Good idea if you’re feeling lightheaded, but seems like a weird idea otherwise. If I’m totally off the mark let me know.

Thanks HS

Yeah frog do normal people lie down between sets of anything? No
If you are injured then stay out of the gym. When you are back get too work.

If you want to take pressure off your lower back during your workout, then squat all the way down (the infamous ATG style) between sets and rest there.

If you keep your heels on the ground and rest your elbows on your knees you’ll feel the pressure come off your lower back.

I personally don’t like the hanging between sets, maybe at the end or on off days, but it seems to loosen my back too much.

I also don’t like the lying down, I can’t explain it but it just doesn’t feel right. Possible because of what HS wrote.

I’m with Horatio above…

Why are you lying down at the gym?
…seems an odd practice.
Ask your doctor or rehab practitioner.

Why the hell are you squatting with an injured back?

Albeit, many peoples backs feel tight when in that position (supine), i think because it takes the pressure off and allows your hips to drop under your body forcing your lower back into a different type of stabilizing position

i don’t normally lay down. i just laid down yesterday because i was practicing my bench arch in-between squat sets and noticed the sensation.

My back tightens up a LOT when I miss a max single, otherwise I never lie down.

Why? Why? Why?
Bench arch can potentially strain the low back more than squatting can; no wonder you were feeling tight. Also it would have been a lot simpler if you said my back got tight from practicing my bench arch rather than saying I was laying down. Save the bench arch practice for bench day next time

Agreed, i think my back hurts more when i bench then when i do squats and deadlifts, lol…

What are you basing that statement on?
