Lateral Meniscus tear

Fraying, does that supposedly mean torn pieces? I would of thought the surgeon would of had a good look, in the end i think he just wanted to get some pictures and that was it, i was concerned you know, as of course the MRI report made the whole tear sound big, but according to the surgeon what he briefly said to my company was that there was no actual tear and that my meniscus was a different shape - saw a doc earlier and he said that the surgeon has wrote that my meniscus is a discoid meniscus which is apparently rare. Will read up on it now.

Today it has been bothering me a lot, i have taken 2 co-codamol (the 1’s they give you post-op), and a dicoflenac too, but doesn’t seem to of made any difference. I’ll see how things go, but if it does keep playing up, i will request a 2nd opinion from an OS and see what they say, pain feels mostly at the back of my knee, and deep into the joint, almost as if something is caught or stuck, which seems a reasonable explanation for a DM.

Hoping to hear more from you soon

GP i spoke with seems to want to leave it for now, and perhaps i’ll go with that for the time being. I’ll see how it is for the next month or so and see what happens.

I tore my medial meniscus quite badly in 2008, just after my 18th birthday. I put off having the operation, but eventually it became incredibly sore for what it was and I had to. I had this in May 2010, it was just interfering with everything, I couldn’t sumo deadlift or squat to depth, run, wear certain shoes, a bunch of things, it’d just get really sore and swollen.

I had the surgery in May 2010 and the surgeon said go back to lifting when you feel like you can, I rushed it and tore it again, and had another surgery in March 2011.

Now, I feel great, it still hurts and I’m not 100% but I can do a lot of things, I’m squatting 4 times a week and deadlifting five times a week, and my knee has never felt better.

I might have increased my risk of getting arthritis, but I feel better than I did. Your tear won’t fix itself, it can only get worse. If I tore my meniscus tomorrow, I’d book surgery as soon as I could.

Also, if you’re 19 now, and you get arthritis when you’re 40, medicine will have advanced by 21 years - you have no idea what’ll be available in 21 years, they’re already learning how to do cartilage transplants, I’m not worried about it and I’ve had two surgeries.

That’s my 2c.

Thanks for your input, it’s a good way of viewing the whole situation.

Im going to keep my eye on the knee over the next month or so and then see if i need things done, at this moment in time i think i might. Because it’s hurting now and is sore, feel almost as if something is getting caught between the joint. Perhaps where it’s a discoid meniscus, they can trim it to a normal size, if that’s what’s causing the pain, that is.

I used to get that too, it’s part of the reason I couldn’t squat to depth - my surgeon said something like there was a loose piece flapping around, but I can’t quite rememeber, sorry.
