I have been reading a lot lately about mind/muscle connection lately and doing things like trying to flex in front of the mirror to see if you are able to contract the muscle you’re trying to.
I was working on it today when I got out of the shower for a bit, and noticed my right lat was almost HALF the size of my left.
I am not the type to walk around all day staring in the mirror flexed haha so I never really noticed but now that I spent some time looking its drastic.
Clearly I have an inbalance going on. My left lower back is always very tight (I stretch it, not much help)… I can barely touch my toes and I have pretty long arms. You guys think this back issue is impeding my workouts in a way that is causing my right lat to under develop?
In terms of correction I am thinking some extra iso unilateral work to get that lat up to par. Any other suggestions?
That’s pretty crazy. Are you sure it wasn’t just the angle of your mirrors or how you holding your arms? You might want to have someone take a picture of your back so you can get a good look at it. If you don’t get much improvement by doing single limb stuff you should probably get checked out by an good doc.
There was another thread like this, and someone mentioned really hardcore stretching of the underdeveloped lat. Having this problem myself, I’ve been giving it a shot and I swear it’s helping.
Alright I will search for that thread and see whats up with this stretching, I will try that out, I agree the best fix is probably going to the root of the problem and trying correct whatever is causing this inbalance.
Do you have scoliosis? Nerve impingement? I’ve herniated 3 discs in my cervical spine, and as a result my entire left arm and lat are smaller than the right.
You could try one arm lat pulldowns, possibly for the underdeveloped side only, after your typical lat workout.
