Lasting Happiness

That’s my favorite part of all of this, and always has been.

Airdyne and nice stretches of bike trail are my place for meditation through motion. It cleans the slate.

3 miles with the dog

MP—Worked up to 65x6; drop set 50x15. Full range of motion and no pain here.

Pull-ups are still a no go. I also can’t do hanging leg raises. But I otherwise am feeling good.

Vups—3 sets of 12.

5 miles today.

Do not become your regrets. Do now.

Adult gymnastics looks like a lot of fun! I wish there was something like that around here.

Yeah, I think insurance can be prohibitive. I’m lucky to have a gym that still allows adults in. It is pretty fun.

Wed: gymnastics— still can’t swing on a bar without pain. So no bars.

Worked up the courage to throw a round off back-handspring on a tumble track. I am not yet confident my body can withstand the impact of back tumbling on the floor, but I’ll get there. I like my daughter’s gasp. Such little faith!

Squats today: worked up to 215x1. Same issues -not deep enough and knees caved on way up. But this is a new lifetime PR.

225 is finally in my sights.

Wow! Solid ‘floor’ work, you still got it!

Congrats on the PR!!!
I don’t think she thought you were going to pull it off. Fooled her!

Today: 3 mile run
Squats: 135x20

L-sit hang; facepulls, push downs, shoulder dislocates, Bulgarian split squats.

Feeling like an old car that hasn’t been started in awhile.

My strained lat is improving but persists…

Bench 85x14

Then banded stuff and isometrics —trying to make my body gymnastics ready or at least less ready.

6 miles. Lovely morning; lovely run.

Dang, the last time I ran 6 miles I was like 25 years old. Fun trivia fact though, I did once come in third in a 5 mile run around the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln during a ‘steel beach picnic’ during Westpac in 1990 or 1991, I think? I can’t remember how many laps around the flight deck that was, but I do remember that the 2 beers they allowed us after being at sea for 45 days without a port call tasted great afterwards, even if they were crap beer.

I can’t imagine being at sea that long … or running in circles for five miles. How many years were you in the service? Was this active duty/ gulf war stuff? Thanks for your service.

11 years, and yeah, active duty during the original gulf war. I would have stayed to retirement, but circumstances resulted in my having full custody of 3 kids, so it stopped being an option.

Edit: You also have to realize a Nimitz-class carrier is almost 1100 ft long, so a lap around the flight deck is more than a quarter mile, so it’s less laps than if you were doing it on a track. Steel deck covered in non-skid is a little harder on the shins, though. The real fun was getting runs in on the hangar bay during flight ops, when you had to dodge around parked planes that were chained down to the deck, and avoid oil slicks.

Still lifting and running but focusing more on gymnastics.

Gymnastics is my first love. I’ve had an on again off again relationship with it over my whole life. These last 8 years—when I haven’t done any gymnastics—has probably been my longest break from it.

I have never started back at such a low level. I have always been able to do certain things. Hopefully I can find my way back
To familiar ground.

Still negotiating the strained lat, but it’s definitely improving.

This is bars week 3. I could do that kip week 1–so I’m sure it will come back to me once my lat is fully firing.

Monday: bench amrap 90x13; bike + 30 minutes

Tuesday: run + gymnastics

I feel my age doing gymnastics. Trying to work through that and better prepare my body for those unique stresses. Looking forward to improving and maybe feeling that feeling.

Wednesday: squats amrap 145x20

I was nervous before this set—not because I didn’t think I could get the reps I wanted but because I knew that it would hurt. It did. But less than I was expecting. Squats are going well.

Edited to add Bike + 30 minutes

Thursday: probably about 4 miles. No watch. One of the things I really like about running is that it doesn’t always have to be measured and quantified . Leave the watch at home, run how you feel. I’m too familiar with the roads around my house to get lost or lose a sense of distance—but ignoring pace is a real treat. Need to do this more.

Friday: yoga. Working on upper back and shoulder flexibility—can’t do gymnastics the way I want to without it. But bridging/back bending is miserable for me right now. I really have to be patient with myself here.

Saturday: bike 30 minutes. Sweat poured. Felt awesome.

MP: amrap at 60x 12. Seem to be stuck at that number. Rested briefly and added sets to up the reps: 6 and then 4.

HLR: happily strained lat has improved enough to allow these. This is progress: 3 sets: 12,10,8.

Banded pull-ups: because lat still won’t allow these.

I’m feeling more confident that I ’ll be better and back soon.

Sunday: 4 miles. I didn’t feel great running today, and I didn’t complete the distance I wanted to run. But the sunrise was beautiful. So it’s all good.

Yoga.
