Then came bench day 05/07/2024. It was supposed to be a relatively easy 175 AMRAP. For some reason, 135 felt really weird. Only was able to do 3 reps when it was supposed to be a 5 week. Didn’t think much of it cause I knew I was still warming up. Then came 150. Holy shit failed the 3rd rep. Right arm gave out, couldn’t lock out my tricep. I felt like my lats couldn’t pull my arm in, hence I was flaring really bad on the right. I had to lower it to my legs and put the bar down. Didn’t ask for a spot because I’m pretty sure I just benched 185 x 2 as you see above. Thought I was just really drained because I squatted 290 x 8 the day before. This back to back squat and bench day never used to be a problem though, so I was panicking a little. (hello @anna_5588 lol). Anyway, decided to go home and rest. I don’t remember any pulled muscle, straining, or pain.
2 days after, I get fasciculations for 2-3 days in the lateral head of my right tricep (the side which was failing on bench). Also got tingling on the same side, from the tricep radiating down to my index finger and thumb. Extension of my thumb sometimes also felt very off. Like I lacked fine motor control for some reason. I’d get random bursts of tingling that’s very bothersome. I couldn’t really find a position or movement that triggered or aggravated it. Took ibuprofen 800mg every 8 hours for two days, no relief. I took my band and I couldn’t extend my right tricep overhead behind the neck while I could easily do it easily on the left. I start really panicking at this point (had fasciculations in my left rear delt before too, had MRI and no slipped disc or anything. This happened in 2021 but never had numbness, tingling, or weakness with it). Still no neck pain or anything, but my right traps have been really stiff in the last few weeks, which i attribute to poor pillow height.
Anyway, I wasn’t able to get an MRI this time around but I figured might be a slipped disc around C6-C8. I see one of the physio docs and he says he thinks it’s a strained tricep tendon because there were several tender points on the left tricep tendons. He says there are nerves that run through there and that explains the tingling and numbness. Today I still have some tingling in the same area, less random bursts, and index and thumb have some weird “thick” sensation. I squatted last thursday and it didn’t get worse. Did some tricep work too, overhead behind the neck extensions and kickbacks with a 3 lbs dumbbel. Focused on the contraction. Been overdosing on B-complex. I haven’t benched since, but I’m really hoping it’s really just a tricep strain as opposed to a slipped disc. I’ll take a strained tendon any day over a nerve that’s dead. Gonna get back into it in a few days, but definitely gonna watch it closely and not do anything crazy.
That 225 bench is starting to feel distant again. Maybe I’ll never achieve it? What’s for sure though is that it will mean more to me than my first time pulling 405, squatting 315, and pressing 135. Let’s see what happens.
Is it normal to slip a cervial disk without obvious neck symptoms?
Would a slipped cervical disc affect lower body stuff?
I’m genuinely asking bc slipped discs are so weird. Some of my dad’s ortho buddies have treated people with major herniations that feel no pain, some who have no issues but feel a lot of pain and some where pain and nerve stuff was well matched with the severity of the injury
I wouldn’t say normal, but I know it happens. There’s lots of people who have slipped discs based on imaging but are completely asymptomatic
Damn dude, that sucks!
The neck is pretty weird. You can have super tight muscles squeezing on your shit and not even feel it, unless you start poking and digging around with your fingers. Anyway, blah blah blah.
You mentioned the feeling of “losing” your lats and your arms flaring. As you make your comeback from this, be sure to regain that anti shrugging motion, or that ability to pull your shoulders down and keep your elbows place.
You’ll want all that stuff working properly before you start doing big presses and chinups. You don’t want to ingrain bad motions with an elevated shoulder and “loose” arm.
Good point. Thanks man. Got some ideas for a DIY rehab ideas already. Basically tricep overhead extensions behind the head with some 3lbs dumbbells first, then try and add weight, then progress to bands. That and towards the front, and then tricep kickbacks. And benching at home with bands just to keep the motion and that scapular anti shrugging motion
Are your fingers getting back to normal?
Much Less tingling compared to the second and third week when it was at its worst. I also have less random bursts of the tingling. Still some “thick” sensation when feeling things. I noticed my right tricep is a little smaller than my left (I’m right handed).
Overall it’s feeling better. Not 100%, but better
Holy shit! I was reading fast and the dates didn’t register.
3 weeks?! That must be scary as hell, a working hand is pretty useful in your profession.
Having you been doing any motions or McKenzie Method, anti disk bulge -type things?
3 weeks and counting ![]()
pretty useful regardless of situation ![]()
So honestly I have not. It might not be a buldged disc and might purely be a tricep issue, so trying tricep rehab stuff for now
05 June 2024
Squat 275 x 8
Tricep rehab stuff
Thinking of how I’ll get back into upper body movement. Gotta bench somehow
Volume.
Sorry to hear about this. Saw your post in flame free thread and had to investigate.
yeah light weights, volume, machines. gonna focus on getting a pump for now I guess. It is what it is.
Got more information today. EMG basically says C7 radiculopathy. Gonna get MRI prolly next week. Tingling is less now though
The time you take now pays dividends. The C7 is a tricky and busy place that deserves attention.
Stability, mobility, strength. Thats the order of priority.
FWIW this sounds like a potential rotator cuff injury. I would look into that as well. The sudden drop off in stability can be a smoking gun. A good physio should be able to assess without needing an MRI.
