Lanky Me Chasing 5 More lbs, 1 More Rep

Ahh thanks mort! Solid advice as usual!

10 to 20 breaths between jumps as in between reps and not sets?

Btw, hope you’re doing ok with the finger problem and all

Between reps walk back, just take the time no rushing before the next jump.
It’s explosive and even if it’s such short time you should be using a lot of energy.

Finger is still cold but I’ve been through lots of tests and specialists and they say there’s no more they can do. Annoying but I’ll live with it.

@whang do you measure your vertical often? How has weight training improved it? Dunking has always been a lifetime dream of mine since a little kid, although I’m not doing anything to actually improve my vertical aside from squats/deads lol

I don’t know the specific number but I’m sure it increased even if I didn’t do plyometrics until now.

I don’t recall being able to touch the rim of a standard basketball ring even when I was training for volleyball in HS. During college, I’d be 2 to 4 inches short when trying to reach for it. After starting weight training I’ve been able to do this consistently though

Still a long way to go before dunking, but I’ve definitely been able to play like I used to

I think you have to be at least 6 inches above the rim to be able throw it down.

Do plyos really help that much? I’ve seen 5’6" powerlifters dunking lol

Dude. After watching countless of YouTube videos, I’ve learned the secret to being able to dunk. It’s actually quite easy. All you gotta do is…

…is be black.

I got this from @Frank_C. He told me before just to focus on building up general leg strength for the time being because it’s like building the foundation. Doing plyos is like peaking or expressing that strength better. If there’s no strength to express, then it’s kinda pointless.

Wendler says that once you reach the zone of x2 BW squats, that’s where you feel the most benefit in sports. So I wouldn’t really be surprised to see 5’6 powerlifters dunking. They’ve got the strength for sure. Add in some practice jumping, then it’s not unbelievable.

I always wished I was black when I was younger. They seem effortlessly athletic lol

That makes sense.

That’s a good goal to have then. Still a long way to go though haha

Genetics can be a bitch at times. Lol

What’s your weight now? Luckily, I’m just 70 to 72kg. I’m in the weak ass 2 plate neighborhood for squats, so adding a plate might take a while, but definitely doable.

Around 75kg @ 5’10". Last I checked I can reach the rim with just the top of the fingers.

Same lol

Well, good news is if we stay on 5/3/1 and your current TM is around 115 to 120kg, it’ll take 7-8 cycles to get to 3 plates. Assuming all goes well and you don’t get bored with 5/3/1

Hopefully. I wouldn’t get my hopes high on the 8 cycles though. I think it would take more than that, assuming a reset after every few cycles. I’m giving myself a year to hit 3 plates.

Yep, this is the more realistic scenario. I’d love to have a friendly race with you on that, but March/April this year will be a big change for me

Let’s do it! Nothing to lose man. 1-2-3-4 plates on the four 531 lifts? I used to see “race to something pounds” threads here before, but I don’t think there’s anything active as of the moment.

I don’t know how I’ll do this without a gym though lol. I’ll get back to you on that in March/April. Bummer, we’re pretty close in stats

You can still do it. You won’t be able to do the traditional four lifts but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. You can use your body weight to work on the pressing movements and I know some awful single leg exercises that will make you wish you were squatting.

Ah, yes, the single leg exercise that should not be named! Haha. But yeah, I’ll have to see what happens March/April. I’ll think about what to do when I get there

Don’t underestimate calisthenics brah. Do volume on them and eat lots use it as a mass phase.

Oops I think I wasn’t able to post my reply. Sorry about that.

Alright, thanks for the tip @mortdk !

But the finger isn’t getting worse?

Maybe I can catch up on your pullups that way lol

X for doubt
