Krypteia Redux

I’ve been doing Krypteia Redux for about 5 months (I do a lot of BJJ so can’t hit weights very hard) and really enjoying it but I’ve just realised the circuit is meant to be 10-20 reps whereas I’ve been doing 6-10reps. Is it important to do 10-20 reps? 5 x 20 reps seems like a lot or reps! Thanks,

You can still hit the weights hard with bjj. Keep your sessions separate, perhaps don’t go overboard on volume, but by all means hit it hard! It’s the only real path to results. The rep ranges are mostly suggestions here, if you get better results with some heavier weight and lower reps, get after it. Jim wants you training hard, we’re trying to get jacked and strong as hell for ragdolling dudes in jiu jitsu. Hard training is needed for that outcome. I lift hard 4-5 days a week and do jiu jitsu 2-4x a week, so I know it can be done. 5/3/1 Krypteia is an awesome program and definitely won’t stretch you too thin for jiu jitsu, just try to keep your lifting sessions and jits sessions at Opposite times of day, you may not always be able to, but it helps. It’s just a mindset man, don’t make excuses.

Thanks Dave! You remind of me when I was 26. Apologies, by hitting weights hard I meant doing a lot of volume. I did 20,747kg/ 45,739pounds volume yesterday and felt pretty beat up. I’m all for going hard (hence why I like 5/3/1) but I’m 39 and roll 5h a week. The amount of volume I can recover from in the weights room is seriously reduced by the amount of BJJ I do. I think I prefer higher weighs/lower reps because that’s what I’m better at and focussed more on strength. Also mindful that at lower weights it’s easy to go overboard on volume. Glad to hear it’s not a big deal.

Glad to hear it man! We get a lot of young members that like to basically seem to seek validation for going easy or have us justify excuses and I wanted to rewire that philosophy early on if that was the case. Sounds like you’re an experienced vet and know what you’re doing. Respect to you brother and apologies for the misunderstanding. Hope you’re enjoying the program!

Dude, since this year has been full of bad luck and injuries, my brain has been trying to talk to me like you describe as I get over 35. I know what is right, but there needs to be people like you continuing to point it out!

Makes sense! No need to apologise; you didn’t say anything disrespectful. Appreciate the advice. I looked back at my last 10 years of lifting and I’ve averaged less than one session a week so I can certainly do with making fewer excuses! Keen to learn more about how to fit weights around BJJ so I’ll stick around and follow your training log.
