You guys are apparently only looking at this as if he is going to be on stage all by himself. His legs look great compared to the average serious weight lifter. Do they look great standing next to Kai Greene?

Is he planning on competing as a heavy? His regular weight is what, 245? Competes in powerlifting at 220?

I would think leaning out + BBing competition conditioning would get him close to 198.

Anyone know his current weight?

Even standing alone I wouldn’t be THAT impressed from a competitive bodybuilding standpoint. He’s fucking big no doubt but are people really that amazed?

Still, it’ll be interesting to see what he looks like in contest shape. Seems he is going to be shredded.

Actually, I think most people were remarking at that picture in the context of thinking that they wished their quads looked like that after having atrophied some.

I read these comments that guys write and its like they have never even seen a contest ready BB in their life…Kroc is a badass don;t get me wrong and he looks great…but these comments are just ridiculous he looks like any competitor should look like 10 weeks out, and he is in the right hands…but damn these guys act like veins are your traps set you apart or something. Kroc himself prob cracks up reading this shit.

Proff X I’d have to disagree with you on this one. I think everyone is amazed because Matt K’s physique is outstanding for someone who did not have the aspirations to be a bodybuilder throughout their career and later on making that decision and showing a physique that is truly outstanding. For you to compare him to Kai Greene is sort of unfair due to the fact that this is his FIRST bodybuilding competition.

As a person entering their first bodybuilding competition with that kind of physique it is very plausible in my honest opinion. I dont think many PRO bodybuilders brought this kind of development in their first show, but that is quite arguable as well. Regardless, the dude is jacked compared to anyone be it cardio queen or IFBB pro i doubt many pro bb would deem him or his legs anything short of “big”.

Nonsense. If he is now competing as a bodybuilder he will get compared to other bodybuilders. How the hell does it make sense to do otherwise? We get it, you guys LOVE the guy. He looks great and is no doubt as bad ass as he comes across…but as others have pointed out, these comments are way over the top as if some of you have simply not seen other bodybuilders.

If we now can’t compare Matt to other bodybuilders, what the hell is he doing on stage?

You don’t think other bodybuilders were impressive at their first contests? Kai Greene hasn’t weighed less than 220lbs since high school. What are you talking about?

No one said he isn’t well developed. We are saying these comments do not make sense because he isn’t looking any more impressive than most people do 10 weeks out from a contest at a high level.

“Veins on the traps”? I am still carrying too much extra body fat and I have a huge vein on my left delt tie in that is visible no matter what kind of shape I’m in. That sort of comes with having big muscles.

He stated he was hoping to compete at around 215

You’re right, they don’t look good next to Kai Greene.

I admire what Matt has accomplished. I went to high school with Matt and his brothers. My nut hugging is directly related to knowing him. My bad.

Dude, there is nothing wrong with liking the guy. That isn’t the issue. It just seemed that some were commenting as if they don’t even follow bodybuilding at all…which makes me wonder why they speak on it like they do.

His legs look great for someone who lifts weights…but competing at the level he plans on is nothing like what most people are used to. He is going up against the genetic elite so no matter how much some of you may like the guy, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have weak areas to work on if he plans to do well.

My guess is the same sort of psychology is going on as occurs when anyone who has not been in a sport and is known for other things “suddenly” and surprisingly tries that sport.

People tend to root for him.

Perhaps because they understand that they are not real – oh, race car drivers for example – and so when a “regular guy” who also is not a race car driver, but was known to them for other things, tries his hand at it and does will pretty they feel a connection with this.

In other words, if Kroc had been thought of as doing bb’ing all this time people would find nothing remarkable about where he is now, but since he was “a guy like me, not a bodybuilder but lifting for strength” and now is looking like he can do pretty well on some stages this gets much more attention.

(Of course, the typical person imagining Kroc to be “a guy like me” is flattering himself anyhow, but I don’t think that that defeats the psychology.)

What are the other competitors like at the Michigan State NPC Championships/what were they like last year?

Been a while since I’ve checked the NPC results…

Bill, Kroc’s training = low-volume BBing plus some max/near-max lifts.
Had a bunch of positive posts about Ruehl in his blog, too, and about Justin Harris’ arms etc… He’s certainly got the BBing bug, had it for quite some time.
(I don’t mean any of this in a negative way… Got to mention that before some moron chimes in to “defend” Kroc).

What you described I could see happen if we were talking about some Oly Lifter or some powerlifter basing most of his training on Sheiko etc, but Kroc always struck me as more of a power/builder guy anyway.

NPC level is nothing to play with. That is how most of these guys turn pro…which means the overall look is “damn near pro size and quality but just shy of it”. This is like the step right before they turn into massive Kai Greenes.

For instance, this is Zinjun Croon who competes at around 225lbs and is only 24 years old.

Meet Mark Alvisi who competes at just under 220lbs at 31 years of age.

The competition at NPC level is what I follow very closely because that is my overall goal as far as relative size.
