With this stuff about powerlifting v/s bodybuilding, direct arm work -heres another case for direct bicep workout from a powerlifter:

Wow:
After years of discounting the practice, I’m about to do something I didn’t think I’d ever do. I’m going to do a public about-face and not only endorse but encourage direct biceps work as an integral component of your training, irrespective of your goal. And no, I haven’t been hanging around the Jersey Shore.

But first, a preambleÃ?¦ I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve called John Berardi a brother, mentor, best friend, and business partner for the last ten years. I work in a market segment that’s growing in number and girth, and I’ve grown up and now practice during a period of robust exercise study, theory, and application.

We dismissed the biceps curl. We f%$*ed up. And my fortune ended.

It was September 25, 2009, and my biceps tendon ruptured. Was it an unexpected, high force movement? No. Was the muscle or joint cold? No. Was I on steroids or taking a flouroquinolone-based antibiotic? No. Was it a supramax load? No. Was I cheating form? No.
Gee, now that people are now finally figuring out what we’ve been saying for a decade now, I wonder how long before people actually start listening?

That “don’t train biceps directly” bullshit must have fucked up the progress of too many lifters to count.

Yet they still act like the people with some muscle on them are clueless.
Yeah I never really understood the hate. I mean just look at biceps from the perspective of size… are they really that small compared to other muscles of the body? Not really.

Anyone with arms bigger than 14" is clearly on steroids. Training biceps directly guarantees that a lifter will suffer extreme CNS burnout, get no results, and probably want to kill himself. Avoid biceps curls at all costs…

But seriously, I think the whole “anti-bicep curl” thing MIGHT have started with certain training experts emphasizing that compound movements are more efficient than isolation movements and are therefore more appropriate for CERTAIN people’s goals (i.e: soccer moms, Men’s Health guys). However, some “training experts” took this to the extreme, warning everyone (even BODYBUILDERS with years of experience) that directly training arms would lead to overtraining and that direct arm work was for idiots…

I experimented with some of Waterbury’s TBT, doing 3 full body workouts per week. I got good results for my fat loss goals, but I included some direct arm work in each session, and it added a whopping 6 minutes to each workout…

If you think Shelby’s comment was great, some girl friend of his posted:

“Do people ever work out their face muscles to match their bodies? Because if you were wearing a suit, no one would know about all those well-defined muscles underneath. Just curious…”
??

If you’re wearing a suit and people can’t tell you are extremely muscular and relatively lean than you aren’t big enough.
I think part of it is just knowing what that looks like too. I remember when I first got into lifting I saw a video with milos sarcev in it, with a pretty loose shirt. I thought he was just a kind of overweight guy because I just saw a “big guy”, then he lifted his shirt revealing very defined abs and I remember thinking “WTF?”, didn’t expect a really muscular/ripped physique at all. I would guess that’s how a lot of people not into bodybuilding see it at well
Agreed. Obviously some guys just dont have a physique impressive enough that you can actually tell, but more often I think it has to do with the people doing the looking. Derek Poundstone has said that until his first year at worlds strongest man was broadcast on ESPN, some of his colleagues thought he was just a big fat guy. Then they saw him with his shirt off and saw he was 320 w abs

And if a PLer doesn’t want to do “nonfunctional” bicep work, just do a curl comp. There, now it’s functional.

I can accept that many PLer’s don’t want to do biceps work, but consider some words of wisdom from Dave Tate:

“I think if you are training for big arms, direct arm work is a must. If you are doing a lot of pulling and rows already then your biceps work is going to have to be a lot of isolation work.” Jason Ferruggia’s Renegade Fitness

Now, my training is geared more toward strength, but who in their right minds DOESN’T want big arms? I mean, unless you’re 165 lbs with 26 inch guns (highly improbable), why wouldn’t you train your arms?

Attention to detail is my pet peeve.

Pretty noticeable discrepancy between his left and right arms in that shot… has he torn something badly before?

I’ve noticed that the delts look different, so maybe it’s just the pose/position of that shot?

I noticed that too – I wonder which bicep he was hammering the nails into? lol (kinda)
