I use them all the time. On the last rep or two of a strict set of pull-ups. They don’t count in my log book though. I don’t think a tutorial is needed.
I’ve been calling it a cheap rep all these years. Huh.
I am going to have to disagree with you dude. Kipping pullups are not just poor form cheat pullups. They have a form to them. And they serve a function, which is to increase power and speed. This is opposed to regular dead hang pullups which are meant to isolate the lats more and increase strength and hypertrophy.
I believe kipping pullups can be a great addition to any lifter’s arsonal. Now you have wide grip deadhangs, medium grip, narrow grip, chins, weighted versions of the afformentioned, and kipping pullups. Also rope, 1 arm, etc. “There’s all kinds of pullups” - bubba
Read up on it a little and try them out before making a statement like that. I wouldn’t be suprised if you were typing what you think t-nationers want to hear. Your mindset is such that gymnasts don’t exercize properly. They do this kind of shit all the time.
p.s. Once you get the form and rythym down it can be used a part of a full body exercize with great volume and does not fatigue the wrists as easily. It can also feel as if its a cardio workout.
I see alot of MMA guys doing them at the gym. Never knew what they were, maybe I’ll give them a try. I can see the benefit for females who lack that upper body strength. My daughter will be thrilled with them, thanks I’m now a little smarter.

To be completely honest I thought they were poor form cheated pull ups when i saw them. And most of the time when you see someone doing something similar in the gym, they are cheats. But i came accross some crossfit videos on google that are crazy intense. And I started to delve into what they were.
I don’t really blame anyone for not knowing about them. All the books and weight training advice on the market talks about strict form and using cheats at the end to overload the muscles.
Cheats and Kips look similar but are not the same. This is why there is confusion.
Anyways, if anyone is interested, type in WOD in google video and check out a bunch of the crossfit videos. Their combos are pretty amazing.
Any guy caught doing those in the gym should be pummelled.

Was this to me? Anyway, I will investigate further. I don’t type what others want to read, I was just being honest.
Still, I hope you’re not referring to me because your statement would be incorrect. Gymnasts are elite athletes.
I’m thinking they are still just cheated pullups. I watched the videos. Just because someone explains the “form” doesn’t mean it isn’t a cheated pullup.
So a power clean or snatch isn’t good enough to develop power and speed?
The power clean and snatch also develop power in the target muscles of the lift. Kipping on a pull just uses the momentum of the lower body to remove (or partially remove) the target muscles, this doesn’t build explosiveness or power, just poor form and weaknesses.
A pullup is an exercise designed to stimulate the lats, teres major, biceps, etc. using the rest of the body pretty much negates the effectiveness and purpose of a pullup. By kipping it appears to develop explosiveness in the hip flexors, not the lats and biceps (the target muscle groups of a pullup). If you want more explosiveness in the hip flexors, run sprints, pull a sled, etc. If you want speed and power in the lats and biceps, do more pullups, faster.

Agreed. The real question is who DOESN’T kip?
