KC Monsters of the Mall

Well,

I just got home a little bit ago from the show with my tail tucked firmly between my legs.

This show was stacked with some strong guys, and I had an idea before hand, but not this bad. There was a total of 29 guys in the hw ams.

First event was log for max. 260 was very easy for me, went for 280 on my third and final attempt. The log was a 10" and I’m used to a 12", I thought it would be eaiser but was actually harder than I thought. I fought the clean at 280, and just missed the press. I think it this put me in 20th or so. Van Hatfield set a new record of 420lbs and made it look very easy. He was super nice guy to boot.

Next was powerstairs. I was looking forward to this and it was a good one for me. I timed in at 19.5 second with all 9 steps, finishing 7th or so.

Third was a sandbad relay, which I also expected to place top ten in. The 250 was very fast and easy, but then for whatever reason I just could not pick the 275 up. I knew I was running slow, so I finally just got it and carried to the platform, by the time I got it there I was beat and didn’t have anything left to load it. I have a video of this one and it’s painfull to watch. I ended up 20th or so again.

Fourth was car dead for reps. I don’t know what the weight was, but everyone was saying 700-800lbs. The pull was very short, and it was a side handle pickup, neither of which I had ever trained on. I finished with 4 reps. I pulled so hard on the 4th something popped in my brain. The winner got 20 reps.

Last was stones. 260, 290, and 325 all were very easy. 357 went up fast, but the platform was at 48", much higher than I had trained with. Beau said I missed it by about an inch. I’m not sure where I placed in this one.

I am pissed because I should have hit the 280 log, wanted all 3 sandbags, and should have gotten the 4th stone. I think this would have placed me in the top ten which was my goal, and these were all things I was capable of doing. I think I actually ended up 19th or so.

The things I am going to take away from the show are the following;

I’m weak as hell. I’m also at least 30lbs under where I need to be in order to compete at a high level in the hw ams. At 6"4 and 252lbs, I was the lightest HW in the field! I’m going to take a break from the heavy stuff for at least several weeks to try and get back to 100% health, then go back heavy again.

This was alot of fun, and I really enjoyed doing well in the stairs, even if it was just one event. I’m not sure when my next big show will be now, as I feel like I have a TON of work to do. I will try to get the stairs and sandbag videos up later on.

Also, my training partner won his class, the pro lw’s in a stacked field, he also won the car deadlift with the sickest performance I’ve ever seen of 26 reps!

First off, good job for going out there and doing the show. I know this isn’t your first, but it’s something that most people don’t have the balls to do.

I’m not surprised that a smaller log was more difficult for you to clean - that’s normal. And remember, it will have a slightly longer ROM for the press (obviously).

One thing that really jumped out at me though was that you thought a 48" platform was high. I train on a 48" platform and occasionally make it taller, but NEVER shorter. It seems like the trend in strongman is to have tall competition platforms (60"). My point is, keep the platforms high, man.

Sounds like you had some TOUGH competition. Great motivation.[/quote]

Thanks. I definatly need to keep training with new implements as this was a downfall for me.

I know the platforms are getting higher, but from what I have seen they start out high and get lower as the stone gets heavier, so I was not ready to load that stone to that height. We only have 2 platforms, so we need more.

It was without a doubt motivation. It’s hard to think that I’m bigger and stronger than I’ve ever been, but have so much further to go if I want to be serious with this stuff.

You sound like you did great to me. Good luck with your training. Post some videos if you can.

Monopoly,
Which competitor (name) were you? I was judging the HW’s with Willie all day.

Great job man!

Take a nice little break than get back into training like an animal!

Keep it up

Good job man quick! Serious intensisty.

How tall where each stair do you think?

I just watched your sandbag video, and yes, it was painful. However, you were there, while all us typing warriors were at home. Bottom line: You rule, we suck.

You kicked arse on the power stairs, though. I can see why you were happy with that event.

Keep training!

Nice job. No need for tail tucking. That never got anybody anywhere good. Just keep getting after it.

Thanks bud, you made me laugh. After watching it several times I can see what happened. I had it lapped and went to stand up and just lost the handle. After that I got worried about the time and my brain quit working.
