Just Turned 35, Simplifying My Workout

I designed a 5x5 3 days a week full body workout and was looking for opinions on it. I dont care about the chest & arms anymore as you can see. Ive been training for 18 years and have a great foundation. Ive been training also with kettlebells for the last 2 years and love them!

Monday

Squats 5x5
Standing BB Military Press 5x5
DB Rows (1 Knee on Bench) 5x5

Wednesday

Double KB (Kettlebell) Military Press 5x5
KB Swings 5x8-12

Friday

Deadlifts 5x5
Weighted Pull-Ups 5x5
Standing Arnold Press 5x5

Any opinions on this would be great and thanks…

That looks like a solid plan for a few weeks Peter. I’m one who gets bored quickly with the same routine after a short while. Mix things up with some variations of squats and deadlifts. Try some of the oly lifts, they’re great for full body workouts. I personally like power cleans.

I agree. I actually do a clean & press on wednesdays with the kettlebells.

Looks like a solid foundation… some variation(s) as you progress as DZ suggests would keep it fresh.

Good luck!

I like your routine.

I do much the same, except a little more volume on dead lift and squats.

Welcome to the site.

Good routine.

thanks. this site is top notch and im happy to be on board.

Looks good. Totally understand your desire for simplicity in the routine. I assume your primary goal is increasing strength.

My one suggestion is that since you’re a very experienced lifter, you must be beyond basic, linear progression (unless this routine is quite different from what you’ve been doing recently and you still have some room for fast improvement).

If you are indeed at the point where the strength gains have slowed down, you should be prepared to incorporate a few variables such as changes in intensity / rep range / number of sets / speed of movement into your long range plan.

There are any number of ways of introducing those variables (workout to workout, weekly, monthly blocks…)

Anyway, you might as well give it 4 weeks or so as written and then revisit things.

cheers

A little lopsided with an overhead press each workout, but only one pulling movement on that plane. Other than that, looks solid IMO.

could you explain further on this “animalmj”. Wouldnt DB Rows, Swings & Deadlifts also be considered pulling.

I didnt want to do any more chest work. Instead of the Arnold Press I used to do Flat Bench or Weighted Dips but I felt those exercises were putting my cuffs & shoulders in danger as I was getting older.

I was thinking variations of your weighted pullups, along the same vertical plane as the overhead presses you’ve chosen…just my opinion, but then again, I wouldn’t neglect chest either. Do you really think 35 is old?
