I was wondering if you guys could help me put a workout together for my dad. Just something casual since he is a farmer and doesn’t always have time, but he’s looking to get himself into shape and rebuild some muscle that he lost in a neck surgery years ago. Also, he’s got some weak elbows. I don’t know a lot on lifting for older men so any advice or suggestions would be great. He’s about 5’11, a little over 200 pounds.
have him do 5/3/1 or we’ll kill and eat YOU
a basic 3 day a week BB routine with lots of rest and starting easily.
Its tough without him to tell us what is going on. You should try and get him to join and to throw a log up here. The encouragement and reading is 100 times more thn if you hand him a work out and say “Do this Pops” There are days I don’t want to be in the gym at all but when I read the logs of everyone here I don’t want to be left behind…

Not only that but if he regards himself as old or past it at 42, it will impact what he wants/is able to do. If he takes a look at what all the 35, 40, 50 year olds are doing here, it makes it suddenly much more realistic. He will see a number of middle aged people lifting heavy and doing so with various injuries and age related ‘challenges’.

Middle aged?? OK, now I’m nervous. Please define the start date for middle age?

Well, I’m 45 (not a man, but still). I don’t have many aspirations to live past 90. Therefore I put myself at middle aged. The first flush of youth is gone. If you prefer, you can refer to it as the prime of your life. That really is what it is. You have the wisdom of age and much of the strength of youth but weird shit starts happening

Hey, I understand. I’m 45 in a few months. Mathematically I get it…but it sounds very wrong. You start talking about our golden years and we’re gonna have to wrestle

I like to refer to it as “teeing up on the back nine.” That’s were the game begins anyway, unless you’ve already irretrievably f’ed yourself by that point, which is possible.

Not the get all philosophical in someone else’s thread but these have to be the best years. I’ve had kids, they’re getting older, I have my house, I have my career. I’ve done all the life things I’m ‘supposed’ to do now I’m having a blast doing things I want to do. With age and experience comes the ability to not give a shit whether you fit in. Some people crap out at this age and believe their story is written. Others are only getting to the good bits.
You can’t go wrong doing presses, rows, pullups, deadlifts or squats to whatever capacity you possess.
For the record, I’ll be 48 this year. Started at 42 myself. Out-lifting and out-performing 20-year-olds my height and weight too.
I started lifting at 50, and it hasn’t killed me yet.
Although 5/3/1 might just do it.
