Just Tell Me... Please

Here’s the deal folks. FFB here. I am about 6’2-6’3, so a higher bodyweight is needed to fill out, I know this. I used to weigh about 280, most of which was FAT from eating too much and not lifting enough throughout my childhood (I am 21 now). I cut down to 189 my first year of college (LMFAO). I, like most guys here, want to be big/strong, not brad pitt.

Now, I have been actually lifting right, researching, etc. for about 1.5 years. I have become MUCH stronger than I was a year ago, although still not where I should be. What do I need to do? EAT AND LIFT. I know this. But heres my problem: its a mental barrier for us FFB’s to be OK with gaining fat while adding muscle. I am currently weighing in at 215ish with a decent amount of fat still in the mid section. Lifts are:

Bench: 225 (1)
Dead: 375 (1)
Squat: 275 (1)

Currently just doing 5x5’s to get my lift numbers up for a guy my size. Any recommendations here would be great for just putting on size.

I have added some pictures as well to give you an idea of what I am working with.

What am I asking: force it in me that I just need to EAT and LIFT, then worry about leaning out once I have filled out. Any other FFB’s, please chime in. I just need to encouragement. I am currently at about 3400kcal/day, gaining SLOWLY, trying not to add on any more fat. Plenty of protein from turkey, chicken, etc. try to keep my carb sources from multigrain torts, oatmeal, fruit, veggies.

Oh, and as you can see, when I flex, I have some major imbalances in my torso. I have severe scoliosis, so working out these imbalances is also part of my training.

Well, if you’re much stronger than you were a year ago, that’s a good sign. You still need to get stronger though if you want to get bigger.

If you train in a normal mamby pamby gym, this may be your reality check for you. You should be able to easily rep those weights if you want to get bigger.

As for diet, eat lots of protein. I know it gets hammered a lot here, but unless you keep a food log and make sure you’re eating enough protein, you likely aren’t.

I think Chris Shugart wrote something like “Skinny guys always think it’s training, but it’s diet; fat guys always think it’s diet but it’s training.”

I even wrote a blog entry inspired by this post, among others:

In point 4, I believe you forgot to mention that you might have to eat more if you’re not making progress.

Good catch, but I had that in mind when I wrote “other factors” but under eating is common enough it deserves specific mentioning.
