Just. Don't. Suck (Part 1)

I’ve been thinking back to my Lake Placid days where I lived in a training campus and life was easy. I usually weighed myself in my gym clothes in the middle of the day. I never did the first thing in the morning thing.

Well, I’ve been 237+ the last couple of days under those conditions

I think this whole bulking thing decided to hit the fat forward button on me. I don’t really care. I might need the extra fluff to fuel my strength gains. On the plus side I’ll probably hit 250 lbs sooner than I thought (somewhere around Sept '19). The down side could be that it’s more fat than I wanted. But if I’m able to hit a 405 lb squat then I won’t care!

Watch out @losthog, I’m picking up steam!

Know what you mean when you say the fat forward button. I have noticed a little more girth around the middle than I really want. Time to dial in on those sugary carbs and stop eating crap !!

Sounds like you are picking up lbs…:joy::joy::joy: and BF%. Power lifter physique it is then. I’m trying to not get above 250 at the moment. This squat thing is adding the thickness to my legs and the Hypertrophy is working in adding something while dropping BF…

Fat forward!? That was a complete typo but I’m keeping it

I don’t know what happened. Until this past weekend I’ve been tracking my calories and nothing has changed. I haven’t even been hitting my goal most days.

I’m hoping it’s the creatine and reintroduction of big movements like squats and deads. Maybe my legs are swelling or holding more glycogen? I have no idea lol

Great one Big J.

As you say, you started some serious lifting and maybe, just maybe, your body has waited since christmas. To give you the christmas gift of muscles

Woke at 230.2 lbs. I consumed a deficit yesterday and drank tons of water hoping to flush some junk out of my body. I think it worked.

GSS&S W1 D4

BENCH
135 x 20
185 x 5
205 x 8 x 5

PENDLAY ROW
155 x 8 x 5

OHP
95 x 8 x 7
95 x 7 + 1 push press
I guess I should’ve rested a bit longer.

PULL UPS
BW x 8 x 5 all with body English or R/P to finish. FML.

STRETCH & ROLL CLASS
I went to a different branch to catch this class after my workout. I thought it’d be just like yesterday’s class and mostly hit my lower half which would be perfect. Silly me! We started with the shoulder girdle. I laid on my side with my hands on my head (like an old school sit ip) and had the roller just below my armpit right on the Lat insertion. We rolled forward and backward and a little up and down. Holy hell! Brutal.

Eventually we did hit the lower body and even did a little foot rolling on a tennis ball. This was a completely different class than yesterday but I enjoyed it. I’d like to make these two classes a part of my weekly training for the next 12 weeks.

Woke at 230.6 lbs.

Today is a rest day and I’m still struggling to accept those. I have an appointment with my chiro this afternoon and I’ll have her work on my neck again and I think we’ll try the quads today. Hopefully it’ll help with my random patellar tendinitis that showed up right before I was released to run. She said it doesn’t feel that good during the treatment so I’m sure I’ll be sweating bullets.

Today is my daughter’s fifth birthday and we’re having pizza, cake, and ice cream for dinner. I’m going to try to keep my calories kind of low throughout the day to account for that. I’m also going to try to keep from going overboard but that only happens about 1% of the time. The plan is a scoop and a half of protein powder for breakfast (done and I’m already hungry), and I have five containers of food with me: broccoli w/ zesty Italian dressing, chicken breast x 2, and beans and rice x 2. I’m not tracking my food but I think that’ll all come out to around 2000 calories or less which will give me 1700 for dinner. I hope that’s enough!

Regardless of how well I do with damage control I will be heavy tomorrow from all of the salt. I’m sure I’ll also have a long night of extreme thirst.

A bit late to the party but happy 5th B-day to your daughter Big J.
I envy you guys and girls with children at that age. My two sons at 17 and 20 are just not kids anymore. Looking back the times with the kids were so great. It still is, but they kind of have their own life now.

Yeah right I’m not tracking but I’m counting

It’s a mental count… ya know, ballpark figures because I’m eating the same foods. Baby steps, Mort.

I think I managed some damage control with the pizza but I might’ve gotten a little carried away with the ice cream. Oops LOL!

Guaranteed Simple, Strength & Size Week 2 Day 1

DYNAMIC WARM UP
Half mile with some build up runs

SQUAT
135 x 8
185 x 8
215 x 8 x 3

HANG POWER CLEAN
135 x 3
185 x 3
205 x 3

DEADLIFT
275 x 8 x 3

WALKING DB LUNGE
30 and a 35 x 8 ea x 3 sets
I’m not sure if I can handle a 10 lb increase every week on these so I’m using mismatched DB’s this week.

RDLs
155 x 8 x 3
I varied the width of my stance on all three sets and loved it.

FARMER’S WALK
80s x 60 m x 3

My hip feels pretty good. It has some aches and catches here and there but overall it seems to be getting better. I had a little pain on external rotation with my hip flexed while exiting the Tahoe and had a bit of pain which scares me. That’s the same pain I had before the surgery. I’m hoping it was a fluke.

My body has bounced back quickly. I think I’m at a good weight with squats because I suck at them. Deadlifts and RDL’s are easy. I’ll probably just make 20 lb jumps instead of 10 until I feel like I’m using a high enough percentage of my 1RM. I ran part of CT’s Complete Power Look program and I did 5 sets of 6 with 365 on deads. I’m a long ways off from that but it should be doable soon.

Ice ice baby. Keep the swelling down in that hip brother! Damn impressive cleans. Bringing back the beast.

Enjoying watching your return to grind.

I love how the body remembers things. I only had to suffer for about a week and half with the exaggerated soreness from returning to the big lifts.

I felt fantastic today which is a new experience for a Friday. Structuring my workout so that today is actually day 1 of the training week has me feeling fresh at work which is a good thing. Glad I planned it this way.

I also think the Stretch & Roll classes helped mitigate the DOMS from Monday’s 5 x 8 leg day.

I am so excited for you having a great Friday!! Today sounded really positive and that’s good to see you post. :beers: hopefully you have many days like this.

Thanks! I’m starting to feel normal again. I’m definitely not there but the list of things I can’t do comfortably is shrinking.

I have my fingers crossed that my hip continues to heal all the way and that I don’t get out of balance.

REAR DELT MACHINE

I kept my rest to a minute until the last sets and then it extended out to 80-90 seconds. Bench is tough. I’m all out of sync. I don’t know where to put my feet, I’m unstable, and I even feel my quads burning by the end of the set as I try to figure out leg drive. It’s days like today where I consider just putting my feet flat, using no leg drive, and doing all the work with my chest. It can’t be the worst thing in the world.

OHP felt good. Pull ups suck. I’m not going to need to add weight any time soon. I can’t even get the prescribed reps. Maybe I should be doing pull downs.

All in all I enjoyed today. It’s really nice to not be doing deadlifts or squats with sore legs. I was always sore on the push/pull split. Between deadlifts and power cleans my legs don’t really get a day off with that plan. I might start increasing my warm up to get more conditioning or adding some complexes as I go. I don’t want to impede the progression but I’m not in the best of shape right now.

Busch Light I LOVE  that was my first beer and what I grab after a hard day of working on the farm!!

I actually have to put effort in to finding it in bottles here. There are only a couple of liquor stores that carry it. Two years ago it was $8.99 per 12 pack and now it’s over $10. I guess it’s still go compared to the heavier stuff.
