Just. Don't. Suck (Part 1)

Not getting into a gun politics discussion, but an AR 15 is essentially a civilian version of an M-16. It is very much a weapon that “took off” in the military, and has been a staple for like 50 years. They are called assualt rifles for a reason, they are designed to kill soldiers quickly and efficiently.

Technically, anything used to kill people can use the term assault. My ARs are definitely in the house to kill people, but it’s a defensive weapon.

People might think I’m drifting too far to the right, but we’re not far from some really crazy stuff here. There’s a famous meme because a bunch of protestors/rioter/idiots breached the gate of a rich couple in St Louis last year. Nothing happened, but imagine the fear of that situation. You don’t know that they’re going to do and you’re severely outnumbered. All it takes is one person to attack and then mob mentality can take over.

I live on a street with some really nice old houses. We are right on the edge of a largely minority neighborhood that qualifies as a low income area. If things were to get bad enough and people really started running the streets to take what they don’t have then we’d probably see it pretty early in the incident.

Is it a long shot? Yes. Is it possible. Also yes. Time and distance are your friends in those situations and a rifle can buy you both.

Move to Canada.

We’re a lot nicer up here.

My only point being that the reason people have and use them is one thing, but what they are designed for is another. The very word assault is basically a synonym for offense. An AR15 is not designed to be a defensive weapon, period. A shotgun is arguably better suited to the purpose.

But I am just talking guns here, not politics.

Well, handguns are marketed as defensive weapons typically. Without doing any research I’m sure they lead all categories of gun crime statistics. Yet, they’re still called defensive handguns. If someone breaks into a home with a handgun and encounters someone with a rifle, these terms are now pointless right? Not trying to get political either, I just think there’s a lot of silliness involved in gun debate semantics.

ARs usually fire a goosed up .22 - aka babies first hunting rifle cartridge. With proper defensive ammo those bullets wouldn’t penetrate two layers of drywall, never mind any other sturdy housing materials. A 12g buckshot will blow right through that bad boy into the next room where you may not want those rounds to go. Same with plenty of modern 9mm/.45 ammo.

I get where your concerns come from, but strictly talking guns, there’s a reasonable argument to be made in both directions.

@Frank_C Let us know if you want this kind of debate squashed in your log before it gets too long. Took me a minute to tag you because I was trying to look up your old user name haha.

Well, half true at least. A proper rifle will have more stopping power, but an AR15 has a much higher projectile speed than a typical handgun, more than making up for the the smaller caliber.

There is a reason they are as popular as they are, both for people using them honestly as well as for those who are not.

Agreed. That’s why I made a point to suggest proper defensive ammunition which will indeed stop a human more effectively than handgun ammo, while also reducing the likelihood of over penetration. It’s pretty neat engineering.

Nothing I like more than a bit of over penetration.

Talk about an alley-oop huh?

And that reason is the term “assault rifle” was created in the 90’s to craft a specific perception about firearms among the American population, so people would accept a Congressional act limiting handgun magazine round capacity and certain types of rifles. The phrase incorporates a crime - assault - which inflates emotional responses to guns, demonizes ownership of certain types of firearms, and wrongly shapes perceptions of everyone who agrees with the Second Amendment.

True. But if forced into an encounter, then I will play on my terms. To expand on my previous scenario, I won’t wait until I’m cornered in a closet. I will launch my own assault the best I can. I might be the one doing the assaulting, but I would only be reacting to someone else’s actions. I still think that qualifies as defense.

No worries. So far so good.

With red dot optics, an AR-15 is much easier to shoot accurately than the other options. A shotgun is great, but you get much less ammo and reloading isn’t exactly fast.

My rifles are for doomsday scenarios - we abandon the city and head for the countryside. One will be for combat and the other will be set up for hunting (scope with magnification instead of red dot).

Hard to argue against that. 2020 showed how the media can control people.

RUNNING
75ish meter runs x 8 (walk back for rest)
First one was 15 sec, the rest were 14. This was done on the sidewalk across the street and it had a very slight incline. One of my runs said I went uphill 10 feet and another said 7 feet. The rest didn’t register any change. I’ve noticed that if I stay in one area then my watch struggles to track all the stats.

Have you done it? I was initially thinking my fast would be from dinner to dinner, but the article makes it sound like I only get the two 400 calorie snacks for the day. That might be worse for me. I seem to do okay with ignoring hunger until I eat for the first time in the day - then it’s game on.

Do you think a complete fast from 6pm to 6pm would elicit the same results?

I’m going to give it a shot tomorrow as written. I don’t have any chicken so I’ll probably be drinking two giant protein shakes for my “meals”.

Not wanting to get into the politics here, but this sentence jives so much with my experiences and thoughts.

It works, I’ve done it.

My thoughts are:

  • Drink lots of fluid/coffee
  • Forget carbs, Fat and Protein are your friends here
  • I had one meal in the morning, one in the evening. That worked best for me, I don’t fair well with full on IF. YMMV
