6x6s on the swing set posts. 4x4s for the monkey bars and 2x6s for the horizontal pieces. It’s robust. If the kids quit using it then we’ll hang porch swings.
What % are those ‘lite’ beers over there. I thought miller lite was around 4% which whilst not real strong, is more like a mid strength beer down here. I call beers around the 4% beers session beers. It’s the type of beer you can strap yourself into a seat and just drink all day at a BBQ and still not lose your lunch. Once beers get much over 5.5% then it’s a lot harder to drink it hard.
You got it - typical American light beers are 4%.
Nice work J.
Beer is religion for some. I would say those light beers is good to drink while working or as Simo says during a long barbecue…
But a real Belgian dubbel or triple is the beer for me. But you can’t drink much of those. So the lighter beers for parties for me.
Mort I remember some guys from Denmark visiting the UK for Busines back when I worked there. They bought a selection of beers from light to dark as a gift. I remember the dark ones being seriously strong, but also sure I remember them saying they drink smaller glasses not pints like the brits ! Thank goodness because a couple of pints of this stuff and I would have been on my back.
We have a ton of micro breweries all making really good beers but most are strong like over 5 % alcohol most in the line of 6 - 8 %.
If drinking a lot then lager or guiness is good.
Let’s all just agree at least this much:
Beer.
Gulden draak is so good
Thanks to Total Wine in my city, I know what you’re talking about ![]()
What? Guiness of considered heavy over here. It’s not something I’d want on a warm day.
Well quiness is almost food, low on alcohol and thick and creamy.
Not something to drink while working, but sitting in a bar or hanging out with friends, really good to while watching a rugby game, maybe I’m influenced by my Kiwi friend and his english friends.
Compared to most other stouts, Guinness is very easy drinking. It’s 4.2%, smooth, and doesn’t have the same intense malt flavour.
Compared to your basic light lager, yeah, it’s gonna seem heavy. But an ice cold Guinness is so unbelieving thirst quenching. I could pound that stuff like water.
I read that Guinness is made in different breweries, each with its own ingredients, flavor, and alcohol percentage. The bottles Guinness available in my state tastes like drinking water that’d been used to scrub the residue from decades-old ash trays. In the winter, I love stouts and porters; Guinness is one of the harshest stouts I’ve drank.
I spent some time in Lake Placid, NY and they had a local brewery that I enjoyed. They made a beer they called Ubu and it was the color of used motor oil. It burned my stomach the same whether I had one or four. I enjoyed the taste, but I had to be careful with it. I had never had Guiness until after drinking Ubu and I thought Guiness was light by comparison. But, it is definitely a dark, stout, brew compared to light beers.

If it ain’t broke, fix it anyway!

I enjoyed myself so much last week that I thought I’d try to find a new split that allowed for more off days. I might hate it. I might need to suck it up. And I might have to make adjustments to get it to work.
GIANT SET?
SQUAT
bar x 10
135 x 5
165 x 5
195 x 5
225 x 3
255 x 2
290 x 1
I don’t like doing this many small sets so next time will be 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 255x2, and then the top set(s).
PENDLAY ROW
135 x 5 x 2 sets
155 x 8 x 3 sets
DB INCLINE
45 x 8 x 2 sets
65 x 8 x 3 sets
Can’t do incline with squat so here’s the compromise. This has better ROM anyway.
GIANT SET…or not
POWER CLEAN
155 x 2
185 x 2
205 x 2 x 6 sets
RFESS
135 x 5 ea
Called an audible here. These suck and I’m a bit winded after these sets as well as cleans. That’s a bad combo. Initially I planned to do squats and RFESS twice a week. New plan is to do them each once a week.
BARBELL CURL
Triple Set
65 x 10/10/10 (lean back/upright/lean forward)
DELTS
B.O. REV DB FLY
25 x 20
DB LAT RAISE
25 x 15
REAR DELT DB FLY
25 x 20
As you can see, I didn’t love this session. To create this setup, I wrote out my original plan and made sure everything found a place. It’s tough putting supersets and giant sets together in a home gym with one rack. I could probably find a way to keep RFESS and squats twice a week, but why? I’m doing power cleans, clean pulls, and deadlifts, as well, so I think legs will be fine. Giant sets might become supersets to open up some options, too. I want to stick with this because it’ll improve my conditioning but there are a handful of movements that I don’t want to do when I’m out of breath (deadlift, squat, cleans, and RFESS). It’s a tricky balance.
Yer Guinness doesn’t travel real well. If it’s not made with water from the Liffey it’s not real Guinness !!
Great job on the swing set. We recently moved and I was required to tear down the set I had built years ago. The kids ask at least weekly when I will build a new one! I like the adjustable height bars especially. May borrow that idea.
RFESS of 135 holy crap, and with squats and cleans in the same session? Brutal.
I had seen Gulden Draak down at the local store, but never tried it. Your post made me take a closer look, and I picked up this today…

Although this dark version is a “quadruple”, where your white version is a “triple”. No flippin idea what the difference is, but 10.5% alcohol almost never goes wrong.
Gulden Draak is a seriously nice beer. I used to drink it all the time when I bartended (got a hefty staff discount). I expected it to taste really intense because of the colour and percentage, but I found it to be very smooth and light. Wish it wasn’t so expensive here.
If you decide to go down this road then I have a pretty simple way of getting the measurements right. I bought the monkey bars from Amazon for about $35. They set the width. I placed the first one, measured the gap between the 2x6 supports and then cut three 2x4s at that length. I put those in as spacers and then officially attached the monkey bars. Once that’s done, set the darn thing where you want it. Mark the ends for your posts and dig. You can put the monkey bars back on the ground when you set the posts, too. It’s way easier than measuring and analyzing. I really enjoyed building this because it wasn’t a piece of furniture and didn’t have to be perfect. It was way less stressful.
