Of course he’s training right now ![]()
No! I went to the local meat store and picked up 40 lbs of responsibly raised chicken breasts. And then I picked up two Bang energy drinks.
Recovery!
You’ll crush it tomorrow.
I just watched a 350lb champion strongman do pistols on a (flattish) bosu, and then on a raised pipe thingy about 4 inches wide.
Immediately, I thought of you… ![]()
(Martins Licis if you’re interested lol)
Why is he showing off???
I actually did a pistol squat on a bosu ball during my knee rehab back in 08. I just see no use for them now.
I’m guessing money?
He doesn’t need to do bosu pistols to impress me.
Me neither, but there are some dumb people out there
I need to clarify, because I’m doing Martins Licis a disservice I think. He won WSM 2019, he’s the real deal. He has the best technique and is the most athletic of all the strongmen, just not the strongest statically; except perhaps the squat -he has the record for the heaviest Steinborn squat (requires pristine technique and high end mobility).
The “bosu” was pretty flat, it wasn’t the half-ball kind you usually see; he was doing the pistols and assorted stuff to re-activate and loosen up his hips because he just won Arnold’s Santa Monica (beating out Brian Shaw), and was super tight (mostly from deadlifting 775 lbs for 8 reps).
1.26.20
Woke at 220.4 lbs. That’s three days in a row of 220 and 221 weigh-ins so I think it’s safe to say I’m sitting at 221. As I recently posted, I was 221 when I pulled five plates for the first time ever so there’s still hope for a 500 lb pull in the near future. I’m a little past the halfway point of The Daily Dose program. I’ll get myself to the gym later. My legs are sore from running a mile Friday
.
Daily Dose Day #26
Iron called it - today felt great!
WARM UP & CONDITIONING
2 lap dynamic warm up
4 laps of run the straightaway, walk the curve
This is way harder than it used to be.
DEADLIFT
225 x 5
275 x 3
335 x 5 singles
445 x 1
Ok, so I went off program for one rep. I felt good and really wanted to feel something heavy. I did this with straps and beltless. My form went to crap real quick but I survived without injury. This is a post-op PR.
INCLINE BENCH 1.5 REPS
115 x 10, 8, 5, 5, 3
Goal is 30 reps on three sets. This was too heavy. I’d like to keep it to four sets or less.
SEATED CABLE FLY DIRTY 30
40 x 10 x 2 sets
Been doing this as my only chest work on this day. It was definitely harder after incline. I was due to increase the weight but knew I’d be carrying fatigue. I would have been better off with 35 pounds but that’s not an option on the machine.
CABLE Y RAISE
10 x 15 x 2 sets
superset with
CABLE LAT RAISE
10 x 12, 10
superset with
DB OHP
20 x 15, 12
**That’s right - OHP! This is the first time doing OHP without pain since surgery. I can also get my arms into the catch position for a clean. That steroid injection worked wonders. I’m hoping I just had a bunch of junk inflammation built up and now I can move on from this.
SA REV PRESS DOWN
50 x 15, 10, 8
Last and worst…
RFESS
135 x 5 ea x 3 sets
I had it in my head to do three sets of eight. I also wanted to use 135. Things didn’t work out and I had to settle for sets of five. ![]()
This workout was great ![]()
Hell yeah! Someone else runs like me! Our elliptical love affair may have limitations…
The elliptical is already dropping my HR back into the 40s but it can’t train the legs for a run. I’ll run enough to ensure that I can still do it, but I’ll mostly stick to the elliptical for cardio.
Congrats on the post op PR and the OH progress. Getting real excited to se what you can do this year.
I don’t even have to run, so the elliptical is way where it’s at.
Congrats on the shoulder!
Adding onto your thought about running enough so you still can but building your base with the elliptical, that’s kind of the attitude I’ve seen a lot of strong folks leaning toward for barbell lifts. Those lifts take as much as they give, so many of the smarter gents and ladies seem to be minimizing that and putting more time into dumbbells or machines or whatever.
Or I’m justifying taking the easy road… either way, I’ll just toss out a “back in my day” every once in awhile and be covered.
I think barbells are great if that’s all you have, but if you go to a gym with machines, cables, and DBs then you should take advantage of that. The only reason to use the barbell is specificity. If you need to train on it for your sport then go for it. The only reason I squat and deadlift is because I want to improve on those specific lifts.
If I want to improve my physique then I go for the cables and machines. The machines are usually well designed and the strength curve matches our bodies. If you want to build a bigger chest then there are better options than barbell bench press.
I’m all about efficiency. If a machine or cables will do a better job of targeting a muscle and it’s better on my joints then it’s a no brainer.
1.27.20 Daily Dose Day #27
DEADLIFT
185 x 5
235 x 5
275 x 1
335 x 5 singles
I’m sore from RFESS and it sucked up my energy today. I was doing good on calories until dinner. I even had a donut during the day but I bet I was still only around 1100 calories before dinner. My meal was spot on - 600-700 calories and at least 50g of protein. Aaaaand then I had a piece of confetti cake with plenty of frosting. Oops. I didn’t deadlift til 8:50pm but I had cake so I had to deadlift, right?
I believe every set of deadlift above 315 is worth 1 portion of cake. True
Have you thought about working up to 1 heavy 1 every week just to get body used it? Mine has gone way down, but I figure if I did it up to a heavy single or double once a week after cleans it would bounce back quickly.
