Woke at 214.4 lbs. I’m looking forward to training today but my left shoulder girdle is still sore from last week’s abuse. Those DB snatches and that shoulder day with 20 push presses smoked me.

Fiber!
I can but dream.
Oh, look. An article about getting bigger delts written by a guy who used PEDs and a photo of a guy who used PEDs. Delts grow from PED use. It’s proven. I’m pretty sure bodyweight arm circles would work with the right drugs. ![]()
Part 1 - 5 Rounds (Approx. 14 Min)
30* Smith Incline Press
60 x 6
RFESS
100 x 6 ea
Holding one 100 lb DB is rough.
AIRDYNE
1 minute
Part 2 - Tabata Fun
SMITH MACHINE SQUAT
bar x 11, 13, 13, 13, 12, 13, 12, 13
Tried various stances and none of them feel great. If I stop high then there’s no problems. This little Tabata thing would really suck if a guy was doing any amount of weight on squats.
DB OHP
20 x 17, 17, 16, 15, 13, 12, 12, 11
Part 3 - 3 Rounds of AMRAP
SA Press Down
40 x 15, 10, 10
LAT CABLE RAISE
20 x 13, 10, 11 + 20 partials
SA REV PRESS DOWN
40 x 10, 7, 10 + 10 partials
DECLINE DB CRUNCH
50 x 15, 10, 10
Not a bad little session. The Tabata was great for OHP and definitely lacking for squats. However, I was fine with that because I had a hint of nausea after part one. I’m getting a lot done in a short amount of time. The only real down side is that I don’t have time to sprinkle in my PT stuff between sets so I had to stay a little longer and do that at the end.
@liftangryordie500 When I read how you feel and what you’re thinking, it makes me sad.
I feel sad whenever I read about youngsters who have trouble finding the way in life, finding good people to be around.
When you’re young you’re supposed to have a fairly free life, you have to do stupid things and there should be someone who would care and pick you up when the shit hits the fan.
I sincerely hope that you’ll find you place in life, and that you someday will be happy. No one is happy all the time, but one should be most of the time.
@Frank_C you are such a great resource in these forums. You’re gonna be a great community officer.
I cant stand Paul Carter. You can tell he’s fake and trying to carry out his personal agenda. He’s trying to drive his brand and ideology, but is a complete pompous ass, arrogant jerk. Totally not cool!
Feels better that I got that out ![]()
I’ll never read his content or purchase anything from him again just bc of how immature he acted in the training method thread. It’s pathetic, and looks very poorly on this declining website.
I’ve read a lot about training. A lot. I’ve implemented a lot of things, too. I find myself getting irritated lately. Paul shared his style of training and it’s working for him and others (can’t ignore DC training). That’s great.
But here’s where I get irritated. There will always be successful people who advocate steady effort and progression on basic movements. Their results are undeniable. We have beasts on the forum who do a few movements over and over and they continue to improve.
On the other hand, you have guys like Paul. I don’t like or dislike the guy. I’ll take what’s useful for me and move on. But his methods get into the minutia of training. The irritating part is that he (they) make it sound like a requirement. You have to do this if you want that to grow.
It gets tedious. I can’t do everything in a week. The harder I work, the more I just want to do simple things. Maybe I’m not cut out for this hobby. I’m not happy with my results, yet. Perhaps it’s because I’m not willing to push myself far enough. I don’t know. I’d like to think that is not the case. I don’t believe that’s the case. Hell, my power clean and deadlift turned the heads of people I admire in the gym so I must be doing something right (besides all these surgeries lol).
I guess this is kind of an aimless rant, but the very sight of that article pissed me off this morning. The androgen receptors in the delts cause people on PEDs to quickly get massive shoulders. How can you use steroids and then try to tell people what you did to get growth? And they used a juiced up model (I know that’s a T-Nation thing). Normally I don’t mind, but I would’ve preferred to see Chris’s photo as the model. Show me something realistic.
It’s weird because I have never, ever gotten that vibe from him. His stuff seems really pretty straightforward, he obviously knows his stuff and what he says has a tendency to work. I still think Base Building is one of the best books about training I’ve read, and his nutrition approach is sound.
Maybe I’m missing something.
Woke at 213.8 lbs.
@MarkKO, Paul kind of turned into an ass towards Stu in his thread. I chalk it up to the downside of written communication. It’s tough to determine tone of voice or meaning when talking to strangers online.
I’ve been watching his Swoley Trinity Podcast. Seeing a person interact with others on video shows you their personality and helps you understand what they might mean when they write to people online.
It’s unfortunate that Paul misunderstood Stu, but I haven’t written him off. I just don’t think I’m built for his training style.
That thread got really weird as many do on here. Both guys made some good points and I don’t think they were too far from each other’s ideas. They just couldn’t agree. I do think Paul over reacted but then I don’t see what other shit he has to deal with
I kind of viewed it as if he deals with people who want to argue for the sake of arguing all day so he had a short fuse. It would be like one of our regulars around here snapping at a new poster for writing some nonsense in the Beginner thread. You can kind of see the trolling develop and some days we have less patience than others. I think Paul assumed Stu was another idiot and reacted accordingly. It’s unfortunate that he seemed to get irritated because Stu kept posting his observations and experience in the professional bodybuilding world.
I have time to kill so I’m thinking about training programs I would like to run when I get the full use of my arm back…
I always get hung up on balance. I need to do this exercise for that muscle. And this one for that. And single leg work. And big compound moves. And on and on it goes.
I’m hoping to convince myself that all that junk is a waste of energy and stress. If I get strong on some basic moves then my physique will show that.
I’m also wondering if I should combine conditioning with lifting or separate the two. I really liked my MWF push/pull session that I’ve been doing. It keeps me excited to train. If it’s not broke then don’t fix it, right?
I have some ideas and a potential plan on place…
I agree. Base Building and Max Muscle Bible with CT were both good training books that focused on the nuts and bolts of training. Just from these books, I became a fan of Paul’s work.
The thread that everyone is referring to did put a bit of a sour taste in my mouth though, but as JM said it is tough to hear what sort of tone he posts his comments/responses with so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
It looked as though the thread was a bit of a marketing scheme for some new low volume program that he is going to start selling, we shall see. Either way, I’m not taking it personally.
Interesting prediction.
I enjoyed that thread a fair bit. I don’t know if it was Stu or Paul who was off line here.
However I think that Paul has some really good arguments for his style of training for getting bigger, not necessarily stronger in the 1RM strength.
I tried his approach, I just think I overdid as I do with a lot of stuff.
And as said Stu and Paul wasn’t that far off each other. To bad it ended there, could have been a very good conversation the two could have made.
Part 1 5 Rounds
SA PULL DOWN
100 x 6, 6
120 x 6, 6, 6
DB HIGH PULL
75 x 6
BIKE 20 CALS
L15/62 sec
L12/78 sec
L10/87 sec
L15/60 sec
L15/67 sec
The damn bike was the worst part!
Part 2 4 Min AMRAP
DB Snatch
35 x 10
DB ROW
35 x 17
Called it at 4 minutes. Hit the same reps every round.
Part 3
MACHINE CURL
50 x 11, 7
30 x 8F/8T/8B
45* SIDE CRUNCH
BW x 15 ea x 2
I have time to kill before PT so I’m currently on the recumbent bike cruising at L10. I really have no idea what I’m doing in the gym these days. Oh, well, at least I’m here doing something.
I dont know Paul from Adam (I do understand his training principles, I just dont know much about HIM, personally). All I know is how he reacted to others in that thread that he started, while asking people their opinions on the subject matter.
And the way he responded towards Stu was pathetic for a person T Nation felt was worthy of their own forum.
Mr. Tough guy. Get that shit out of here. No one needs that.
Edit: good workout J ![]()
Woke at 213.0 lbs.
I’ve kind of committed to losing eight pounds. I tracked my food yesterday and I fasted until about 2pm. I’m going to go as long as I can without eating today as well. Once I cave, I only have 150g of potatoes, six ounces of steak, and eight ounces of a broccoli Normandy mix of veggies.
Training for the day will be some light cardio. I might just go for a walk…to the tattoo shop to inquire about the cost of finishing my upper arm. I want my flag to be more bold and pronounced. It needs to be darker and I might make it full color which would mean filling in the skin colored spots with white ink. I don’t have the money now so it’ll just be an inquiry.
It sounds like daily journal might be a useful tool for you
Just another thought that you might want to consider. You’re currently 19? From memory? Apologies if I’m wrong. Barring stupid, that’s approximately 25% through your life. You have a lot of time left for you to make things change.
