Just Another Log

Wow this blew up quick. I can see why people are asking to see some evidence of the lifts but also respect nuttys choice to not post images or vids of himself online. I think which ever way this turns out it is a good reminder for people that this is the Internet, which means it’s not real life. Everyone has a choice to believe or not believe what they read and a choice whether to engage and follow along or just not bother.

So did I. In high school, we did hang clean. I hit 275 x 5 for a 315 rep max as a 220 lb senior. You know what I can do now that I’ve trained deadlifts and squats more - less. Newb gains are awesome but you hit the ceiling fast and then it’s a grind to add weight to the bar.

@oldbeancam, I think Nutty has been a pretty good presence around here. He’s never shat on anyone and he’s always sharing his “work hard and be consistent” philosophy. It’s not trademarked material but for some reason it’s needs repeating around here.

Looking back at the strength progression has me scratching my head. But the part that hit me the most was the cheeky photos of Carlton after promising to post something.

I get it. No one owes any of us anything. One could simply say “I’m not posting anything personal. Deal with it.” And move on. But to promise something and miss the deadline and then sidestep the issue is troublesome.

Even if he turns out to be lying, he hasn’t done anything harmful other than inflate his own ego by claiming to be one strong sombitch.

I’d like for him to be the real deal, though.

My main issue with this and why I became so invested in it is because I saw unnecessary bullying for absolutely no reason. In this log and in @flappinit ‘s log, @IronOne has been relentless towards Nutty. Not just for lifting, but as a person. I got annoyed, and responded.

Even if Nutty has lied (which I have said from the very beginning), he’s only helped and been nice toward people for the years he has been on this site. He never speaks ill of people, talks down on them or acts better than because he was a beginner on this site as well.

For someone who has an athletic background and had no clue about weight training coming in, I don’t see his progress as ungodly as many of you do. Yeah it’s crazy and makes him ridiculously pound for pound strong, but the progression hasn’t slipped up in my opinion. He hit a 5 rep PR with 405 on squats in March of 2018. In 2019, he hit that for a 5x5. Same goes for deadlifts, where a year ago he did 405 for a 3x5 and this year is peaking at 500 for 3. Insane? Yes. Impossible? Far from.

Again, he’s only 5’7” and 180 pounds which is pretty solid at that height. If you mix in a no injury sheet coupled with a tumbling/athletic background and minimal weight training knowledge, mixed with an ability to actually listen to advice and apply it, it’s all possible.

This is not bullying. Use another word.

He said he’d post videos. He did not. He got called out. End of story.

Sorry @flappinit for bringing you into this and posting in your log.

If it can be moved here, someone let me know

I’m not posting anymore in Flaps log about this junk.

Listen, you continue to have your e-friends back. He’s just making you look like a fool.

And you can call it bullying all you want. Was I nice, no. Am I right? Yes. Should I have just never even got into this pile of waste? Yes. None of it matters.

No need to apologize. I’m at fault here too, since I posted about him plenty. I’ll ask a straightforward question: Can you think of a single reason to promise someone videos to back up impressive (but not impossible) claims, and promise them for YEARS, and repeatedly fail to show even proof of life? Especially when you’ve already posted now-deleted form check videos back in the day? Any single reason? Can’t be privacy since he promised the videos and has posted videos of himself before.

Dude. Come on, cut the bullshit. NO ONE vilified Nutty, no one called him names or cast aspersions on his character outside the forums or anything. We just questioned the validity of his claims, and in a lot of the cases this was done outside his thread as it was discussion without wanting to attack him directly. It was people discussing something.

Now the question was put to him, show me one post where it is done in a derogatory fashion.

The more you defend him and attack anyone who questions him, the dumber you look. It just seems you have a major problem with someone questioning someone you look up to, who has at no point whatsoever shown any inclination to provide even the smallest bit of evidence to back up his claims.

On this forum there are multiple guys in the five foot six to five foot nine bracket weighing between 180 and 220 lbs. These dudes train consistently and do a lot right. None of them are even close to doing what Nutty claims he can do. Those of us in the forums who are part of the powerlifting and/or strongman scene where we live can all attest to the fact that doing what Nutty claims he can do at the size he claims to be is rare outside higher end national level competitors. Those are guys who are up there in pretty much ever competition they enter except possibly international level.

Then there’s you, grasping at every possible straw to say that the claims are probably true, and that anyone questioning them is a bully. When almost every person questioning the claims is saying we want them to be true, but in good conscience cannot accept them without some form of proof.

Then you ask what happened before cameras. What happened was the guys you trained with would be able to substantiate what you said. Your competition records spoke for you.

Nutty has NONE of these behind him. All he has is a history of delaying providing proof with poor excuses. I get it, you want it to be true and it sucks to be lied to. Nutty was never a dick on here, but when you set yourself up as someone who can give advice for people to follow you need to show why they need to listen. Writing some numbers on a log doesn’t cut it.

By the way if anything this SHOULD be in my log because none of us can be certain that nutty isn’t legit and therefore if he isn’t showing up because of some reason I can’t think of, we might be doing real damage to a real person in a very long and fairly detailed training log. I don’t particularly want it in my log either, and I doubt anyone does though, so hopefully we can wrap this up soon.

I’ll say it again though: we’re on the internet, where Strangers have talked trash to me since 1999, and we’re a forum full of mostly dudes and lots of strong dudes (me not included) who like to lift weights and smash PRs (me included), so to me - though I may be jaded as a marine who went through a lot of brutal and physical hazing - “show me what you can do, because you promised you would last year” isn’t exactly bullying. Positivity is great. Coddling is something else. People have been harsh with me along my fitness journey and it didn’t hurt me. If I went up to some big dudes in the gym and claimed all of this, you’d expect me to be doing something quick to prove it before someone hits me with a plate.

No, you’re spot on. In anyone’s book if you say you’ll do something and then don’t, and then repeat this behaviour you will lose respect and get called out.

Getting called out and being called a liar and deceitful is NOT bullying when that is the behaviour that is being observed. Being called despicable for appearing to mislead people is not bullying, it’s a consequence of your actions.

If you lie, or appear to lie, and someone points out where your story appears to be false or questionable it is not bullying.

No, it isn’t nice, but nice is what lets people lie without consequence.

Someone who isn’t lying overwhelmingly tends to be willing to provide proof of their claims when asked.

The majority of what Nutty has said and done points to him being a liar. To set yourself up as an authority based on false claims and then target your advice towards beginners - the group of people least able to tell good from bad advice or true claims from false - is pretty much the definition of despicable.

If you do these things, and then people call you out and say you are despicable, well, you can hardly complain.

The only reason he was not called out forcefully sooner was because he’s the forum sweetheart with a strength rags to riches story.

@oldbeancam you’ve been played

It’s exactly this. That’s what I dislike the most, a deceitful person playing on people’s weaknesses for their own gain.

Genuinely curious, but how can you hang clean less now (unless you don’t do cleans any more)? If someone cleans X amount of weight without doing squats, I don’t see why increasing their squat would decrease their clean unless they just stop practicing the lift.

Also, on the topic of anonymous users: Anyone know if @Cephalic_Carnage was legit? That dude helped me a ton when I was a teen, but as far as I know, there was never any picture of him.

My experience with cleans has been that I have a peak and that’s about it. There’s no building it up. Perhaps it’s my injury history. I hit 315 for a single back in 2016. It wasn’t as pretty as I’d like. I power clean. That’s probably the biggest factor. If I did a full clean then improving my front squat would improve my clean. Unfortunately, front squats hurt my hip (had surgery and learned my bone structure doesn’t like those).

I don’t think I’m going to beat that 315 because I’m relying on power to move the weight. Call me crazy, but I don’t think that’s going to improve much now that I’m 35. I’d love to match that 315, though.

Wow. I can’t believe what this has turned into. I have nothing more to add to this discussion, I’ve said my piece.

I’m going to continue logging. If any of you want to follow along cool, if not that’s cool too.

I’m not forcing any of you to listen, talk, read, comment, or do anything you don’t want to do. You chose to come into my log, I didn’t ask any of you to do that. I’m not going to post anything personal until I want to regardless of what anyone says. I apologize for saying I will and then didn’t. That’s 100% on me. But at the end of the day I know who I am and what I’ve accomplished. Whether you choose to believe me or not is on you, I’ve never asked anyone to believe me or follow me. I’m not Jesus or god spreading the gospel. All I’ve ever told anyone is to work hard, don’t miss days, eat well/big, and to just keep it simple.

I’m done with this conversation.

Hey, keep logging. You said you would!

Keeping with your current rate of strength gains, you should be benching mid 500’s, squatting mid 600’s and deadlifting mid 700’s injury free at 195lbs in 18 months.

You’re on the cusp of world records! We want to follow. Seriously.

Nothing but love for you Nutty. Whatever the truth is, I hope you are lifting and enjoying life man.

To anyone whom is broken by Nutty’s seemingly dishonesty, or being honest and not showing his lifts. Whatever the case may be. What is the difference? How many guys use steroids and claim it is all just hard work and diet? How many T-Nation articles feature photographs of guys ALL on performance enhancing drugs? The fitness industry, the strength world is littered with people selling you something-- whether that is taking your money, your attention, or your emotions. Everyone whom is in this for themselves, for self improvement, should be reminded it is about remaining in your lane, with your head down, doing your own thing.

Lots of love for Nutty thought this thread but the distinct lack of posting since the blow up is not a good sign…

Not everyone handles being called-out the same way. There’s the Wendler way, whom I recall was called out on the efficiacy of 5/3/1 to wit he posted videos lifting monster weights and then there’s another path which is just “okay, this online place is just an energy-drain so best go on a bit of a hiatus while chugging along”. I respect both approaches.
