Aha, ghetto T-bar rows. I gotcha.

Tough workout for a lot of people to come back to considering a lot of my teammates haven’t lifted all summer. For whatever reason, some of them have a great disdain for lifting, for no apparent reason other than it can be hard work. Hard work on the ice = fine, hard work off the ice = not so fine. Apparently I missed the memo. Anyways, I’m working on being positive in the weight room around them, and trying to show them it’s not so bad. If it reduces some of their negativity a bit, I’ll consider it a success.[/quote]

My lifting has greatly improved my hockey ability.

Speed on skates is a function of leg strength.

Upper body strength helps win the battles in front of the net.

If you want to win, you need to be stronger and faster then your opponent.

Just popping in quick!

2–I totally agree! Glad to see that you too have seen the benefit of lifting! I like how you explained it so simply as well–even if it is explained this simply, some people still don’t clue in to how beneficial it truly can be…or just aren’t willing to put in some good old-fashioned hard work to reap any benefits.

Captain’s practices started yesterday. Despite not being on the ice since July (and not regularly since March), things felt good. I never truly realize how much I miss being on the ice with the team until we get back into it. For at least the first week, I have a goofy grin on my face as soon as I step into the rink. I can’t help but enjoy every moment of being back right now.

Performance-wise, I wasn’t that far out of sorts. Sure, my timing and angles are a little sketchy right now, but conditioning-wise, I think I’m already close to game shape, thanks to some solid training this summer.

Just as hockey begins to kick into gear, everything else in life has done the same–school, homework, lifting, interning, fall TV shows…
Time management has become VERY important–balancing between school, hockey, and a social life, plus squeezing in a little me time takes a lot of planning. Guess it’ll only help me prepare for the busy-ness of life after college, eh?

Absolutely, and then try adding in a partner and kids (something I opted out of!)
Good luck with balancing it all and the new season.

Hope the season starts well for you!

My alma mater choked in the championship game of their own tourney to Colgate last weekend :frowning:

They’re off to Alaska for another tourney this weekend.

Good luck with your balancing, Jr!

I’m not a large man. 5’8" - 185-190 lbs (88 Kg).

I play hockey with guys who are 6 foot plus and 250 lbs plus.

I’m able to shove those guys around in front of the net from my gains with weightlifting.

I don’t score a lot, but I do know I screen the goalie and distract them enough for others to score.

Without the weightlifting, I’d be face first on the ice.

Just checking in, hope your school and hockey is going well!

Well, I thought I’d check in.

Gotta love Clark! I only live 2 1/2 hours away from Moose Jaw, so it makes it even more awesome. Gotta love the Canadianisms in there.

2, as you’ve requested, an update is definitely in order. As always, things have been busy, busy, busy.

Our season opener (and homeopener, as well) was this weekend. We had a two game series against a tough team against Michigan. Proud to say that we swept 'em 5-2 and 5-3. Played the second game (today) and did alright. Definitely had some “learning experience mistakes”, but hey, it never hurts to learn from your mistakes.

Lifting-wise, we’ve transitioned into an in-season training program. In-season lifting has way less volume than pre- and off-season lifting, with the main goal being to maintain our power and strength, prevent injury, and just get us moving. We got a new phase this week that I’m ready to get at. We were doing a lot of unilateral work and some awesomely awesome tabata stuff on Fridays, but I think that’ll be gone because we’re only lifting twice a week now.

School is going well–over halfway through the fall semester and grades are looking fine. In order to graduate on time, it’s looking like next semester will be a completely full load of credits, which means I’ll be busier than now.

Thanks for the update!

Glad to hear you did well in your game!

I’m still 4 weeks from skating again. :frowning:

JM, its great to hear that you are doing so well! Winning hockey, good grades, good training…you are killin’ it in here.

So, seeing as I found some free time in my life, might as well post today’s training goodness and other stuff.
Our new training phase started today, which was hella exciting to me as I got to re-welcome power cleans back into my life.

12 minute warmup

Vertical jump for max on jump mat X 2
(25.8", 26.2")

4 sets of:
1 + 1 + 1 X 50 kg (110 lb) power cleans
45 sec plank holds
3 way neck movement with partner resistance

4 sets of:
3 X push jerk (30 kg, 40 kg, 53 kg, 53 kg)
lateral plate holds (3 10 lb plates in each hand)
single leg back bridge holds

4 sets of:
clap pushups X 4 (for max height each attempt)
8 seconds dynamic (pretty much kroc) rows
30 X single leg stability ball leg curls

-Followed by an angry coach practice in the evening.

The vertical jump attempts at the start of the lift are used as a power and fatigue indicator. We tested our vertical jumps at the start of the school year, which gives the coaches a baseline max to look at.

For the record, I probably do cheat the jump mat so the numbers are pretty useless as far as bragging rights go. Otherwise, since I consistently jump the same way, my vertical on a given day can show a lot. Days where I have not eaten well, not slept well, were fatigued, were hungover, or were incredibly stressed are reflected in the attempts. As I’m still trying to figure out the sweet spot with some of this stuff, the numbers are pretty cool to track.

If tested now, I’d bet my numbers would be down due to tonight’s ‘angry coach practice’. Despite the weekend wins, coach wasn’t happy with the level of discipline or team effort displayed. Thus, lots of skating, followed by a nice little chit chat in the dressing room whilst I tried (successfully) to prevent myself from yakking up the food I ate before practice.

My oldest son, met Motto McLean when Motto held the trash can open for him to throw up into.

Motto is one of the founders of youth hockey for Omaha, long history with the Omaha Knights

Throwing up after a hard skate just means it was a good practice

congrats on those games well played JM

Thanks Mainy!

2–Haha, I try to avoid the puke bucket at all costs. I’ll go balls to the wall, but I really don’t like the idea of tasting my food twice.

=================================

Got a weekend series starting tomorrow so lifting was kept lighter than usual. This week was kind of screwy lifting and practice-wise because we had a game on Sunday. Generally we practice Mon-Thurs, and lift Monday and Wednesday, but we were given Monday off meaning we lifted Tuesday and today and practice Tuesday-Thursday.

Warm up and foam rolling

4 sets of:
6 X back squat (105, 135, 175, 185lb)
side plank holds
8 X 100 lb BB rows

3 sets of:
95 lb close grip bench press (12, 10, 12 reps)
one-armed DB overhead situps (25# DB)
30 X 1 leg stability ball leg curls

3 sets of:
8 X 40 kg BB 1 legged RDLs
3 way neck movement with partner
plate pinch for time (two 35# plates)

Hard training and hard skating. YEAH! Frankly, just reading this makes me tired.

Get shut outs for the weekend, JM!

looks like you are on a good streak- keep it moving

that is some stout lifting for inseason

tear shit up this weekend

Got a pic from our season-opening series, courtesy of the local paper. May not look like it, but this was a save.

Kimba–Thanks! I get tired in anticipation of the skating we do somedays.

2–Thanks!! Hopefully you’re still on pace to get back on the ice soon. I know how it feels to be chomping at the bit, just waiting to finally be allowed to get back at at.

Kmc–Thanks, been on a roll to start the season, which is always a positive. The lifting is tough, but I asked for it. I’m on a slightly different program than my teammates now, due to my lifting experience and training age.

The weekend series had almost the exact same result as the week before–we won both games by scores of 6-2 and 5-2. As before, I played the second game of the weekend, and the game went pretty well. I was not quite as relaxed as I would have hoped, but was able to get my head into the game enough to make the saves as needed early on.

Today’s lifting:

Vertical jump–24.6", 24.4"

4 sets of:
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 X 125# power cleans
3 way neck movement with partner resistance
front plank holds

4 sets of:
2 X 130 lb split jerks
lateral plate pinch holds for time (three 10# plates in each hand)
banded back bridge holds (40 sec)

4 sets of:
4 X clapping pushups
65# DB dynamic/kroc rows
30 X single leg stability ball leg curls

And, seeing as it’s the first day of practice of the week, we skated. A lot. Just because practice was 40 minutes shorter than usual, it wasn’t an easy one. Don’t remember skating quite as much last year. I think the coach is really trying to emphasize being a team that will out-hustle, out-work, and out-play opponents in every aspect of the game. We’ve got talent, but it’ll be a strong ethic that will push us to continued success this year.

It’s that ethic that wins the game.

I was at my team’s second game Sunday night…

I spent a LOT of the game YELLING at them.

Coasting to the puck…
Not looking across the ice for passes…

Ugh…

JM, a bit of hockey humor for you!

This is from the NHL’s application form for disgruntled NBA fans…

How did you first hear about the NHL?

( ) There’s a Canadian kid in our college dorm, and a few of us accidentally spoke to him once.
