Julius Maddox 800lb Bench?

Holy crap not only do you misload a WR, it’s on a lift like 800lbs?

I’ve been to mock meets for newbs that take more care than that.

What’s interesting to me is that he uses a moderate grip instead of pushing his hands way out like a lot of top benchers. Goes to show that the technique that minimizes the ROM doesn’t always yield the highest poundage. I’m sure that if Maddox could bench more with a wider grip and shorter ROM, he’d be doing it.

The first 800 bench derailed by a misload?
Kind of fits with the way the year is going.

Imagine if the misload was an inside job.

Dis is a can of worms maybe best left unopened.

Who stands to profit though…

Profit? In powerlifting? Idk, maybe some guy is mad Julius is benching more than he can deadlift.

In all seriousness, definitely just an unimaginably awful botch in loading. I heard some guy mutter “it happens when there’s that many reds”

Imagine explaining that during a 470kg squat with no weight catching mechanism. lol.

Like i mean he is ded now but everyone signed the waiver

Ed Coan looked pissed off. That’s something you don’t see often.

All things aside -it didn’t crush him. And if it hadn’t have been for the missload I think it “might” have been his. I didn’t catch which side was over loaded. Was it the left the side that failed during the lift?

Either way it’s only a matter of time.

So, I count 12@55lb plates, 2@35 lb plates, what looks like 2@10lb change plates on the end, plus threaf collars that usually run 5lbs each plus a bar. That puts me at 805lbs, depending on the bar and what the change plates actually are (I’m guessing they’re 10’s). A 5lb misload is not great, but nowhere near a

Am I missing something? He would almost certainly have been buried with a 25kg misload.

In the audio the bald official is saying “it’s a plate off”.

I think was an assume it’s a red plate hes talking about.

It is certainly not off by a red plate. I can read that they’re actually KG plates, which changes the math a little, but…12x25+2x15+2x5+5+20=365kg or 804.625 lbs. 5 pound misload, which is why he was so close on it. The official is worse at counting than the highschool kids apparently. If the balck discs on the end are 10kg instead of 5kg, then it’s a 15 pound misload.

Anybody know for sure the weight of that particular bar and collars? I’m only adding up to 716lbs on his “722lb” lift.

6 on the left and 5 on the right

6 a side here. Count 'em.

I think the misload was the other clip when he started tipping over after the unrack.

This is the one labelled “800lb Attempt”, and appears to be 805lbs. I’ll believe video over a still any day. It also wouldn’t make any sense to fail on the lighter side, he would have had an uneven extension with all of the problems on the other side.
Edit## I see how the first video was a simple unrackand re-rack and that one was misloaded. I don’t see it making that much difference in getting it or not getting it on the corrected load. He just missed and that’s what was going to happen. It is a lot less dangerous than one plate too many and he didn’t do more than unrack it. It looks like he probably will get it in the near future but just wasn’t on his game exactly for it. Pressure does that.

This is the clip I was referencing:

No clue if it was actually misloaded, but I figured if they were off by a plate in any of the clips this would be the one given how dramatic that tipping is.

The guy on the far side adds a red at the end of the clip, so that was a misload. Stuff happens, he should have had someone doublechecking for him on something like this, because accidents happen. It buys him time to be more ready and maybe get money on the table for the next try.

It could have messed up his concentration, a lot of this stuff is mental. But I was skeptical about him getting 800 at this meet after he failed 790 or whatever it was in training a few weeks ago. I think he can get 800 at some point, just it wasn’t a sure thing at this meet.
