I do conventional for regular deads on my back day, but I’ll do rack pulls every other session. On leg days, I do 1-2 working sets of RDLs after squats.

On a similar note, how are you guys working deadlifts? As in, 5x5 all working sets, ramping up to a main set, or certain percentages, etc…

Conventional.
5/3/1.
I’ve recently started doing RDLs and I’m going to throw in deficit deads now because I can’t get the bar off the floor. blah

I’m definitely in on this one. Tbh I’ve pulled 405 before; however I’ve since dialled back the weight completely as my form was atrocious and my lower back was kicking out like a mofo (god knows how bad it was for the 405 lift). So my target is to pull 405+ with perfect form.

Doing 5/3/1 like others; usually get someone to watch for my last set and stop me when my form goes. My last cycle I pulled 330 x 6.
Recently increased my calories so I’m looking forward to seeing it go up a bit.

Good luck all.[/quote]

I’m in the same boat. I’ve pulled 405 before but then took out back squats b/c they were messing with my lower back. A few months later, I tried hitting 405 on my 5/3/1 day and couldn’t get it past the knees. I have gotten 345x5 recently. I’ll definitely be trying to hit that 405 with perfect form too. I’ll see where my strength is at this cycle of 5/3/1. On deload ATM.

To OP, if you can get 365x6, you can nail 405.

I do an alernating series 3x5, 4x5,5x5,4x4,3x3,2x2 Then will go 4 weeks 5x5 followed by a 5x3x1 I cross everything up different main exercise every week to keep the muscle confusion going

480 deads

Yeah my deads have been exploding like crazy lately, I had know idea I had that in me. I’ll throw up 405 in a month when I go for it, but I’ll be repping 370+ until then

Lol, damn man that was big but real sloppy. Pretty much an RDL. If you get your form nailed down you could be pulling some heavy stuff

First big thing is start with your feet split in half under the bar, looked like your toes were barely under it

How are you liking 5/3/1 in general and for deadlifts? It seems a lot of people are doing it but then I see posts like “I got ___x2 and now 5 cycles later I nailed (same weight)x5”, that’s like 20 weeks though right? Doesn’t seem too great of progress unless they’re really advanced. I’ve actually heard that a few times about 5/3/1, being better for those who are more advanced.

I like it because I set rep records every week.
And to clarify, 275 use to be really difficult and now its very easy. It may only be 3 more reps, but it was a huge improvement. I probably could’ve gotten more, but I was content with 5 reps when 1 rep was prescribed.
I’m open to trying new programs if anyone has any suggestions.

hey everybody… im still lookin’ for the 4 plate feeling. im 15, 5’6.75" and 165 lbs and im currently maxing at 365. i did that 2 months ago but a strained lat kept me out of the gym for a month and that really fucked up my DL. I was hopin to get 405 before the start of football season but idt its gonna happen. im currently on 5/3/1 and its worked miracles for my DL. happy lifting!

5/3/1 works really, really well. The improvements may not seem as much, but you can set new (rep) PRs every time you set a foot in the gym. I feel like 5/3/1’s greatest strength is it’s way of progressing. I believe you add 10 pounds to deadlift/squat each cycle, and 5 pounds to bench and military. lets say you can do 8 cycles before stalling out, that’s a whopping 80 pounds increase.

I believe the book only costs 20 bucks and even if you’re not gonna do 5/3/1, you can still learn a lot from it.

Sorry for sounding like a damn add, haha. ; )

This is a little misleading in 2 respects:

  1. You initially have to cut your 1rm by 90% and you start out with lighter weights for a few cycles. So while it may be an 80 lb. increase, you initially cut like 30 pounds off. And just because your training max increases doesn’t mean your 1rm increases in-step. My DL regressed on 531 despite hitting above the prescribed reps for a number of cycles.
  2. But, with proper programming inside 531, you can increase your 1rm more than just the standard progression on the program. Working with only a 240 training max (aka, highest I went was 230), I hit 275 on bench.

I agree with the 1rm max thing. Mine hasn’t gone up as much. What proper programming are you referring to?
Also, what other deadlift programs would you all recommend?

edit: I’m gonna try the Coan/Phillipi routine.

YAY! I’m in.
I initially wanted to pull 405 before I went home(from the shitbox) in August. But I have taken about 3 weeks off from Dead lifting because of some back pain.
I have since been doing heavy rack pulls. best is 455 for 6.(from just above knee cap height.
My DL max was 358 a couple months ago.

_Q

oh and I pull conventional stance. raw. no straps.

Also in.
I’ve got a lanky build so I guess pulling comes naturally. I pulled 385 a week ago, hopefully will hit 405 by the end of the month. I’m on a 5x5 but only pull singles for deads and rack pulls. I’ve been doing rack pulls and heavy shrugs for assistance exercises. Rack pulls seemed to help the most though, I was stuck at 315 and my deadlift shot up when I started them. I set the pins below my knee cap, works the best for me. Grip seems to be a big issue with me though. I tried 405 rack pulls and dropped it as soon as I locked out. Just bought some chalk so hopefully that helps.

Sumo stance, raw, and no straps.
