What style of deadlift is everyone using for their workouts? Does anyone change up their routine romanians standard overhand alternate? I am wondering if I am the only one changing it up like that
I do conventional for regular deads on my back day, but I’ll do rack pulls every other session. On leg days, I do 1-2 working sets of RDLs after squats.
On a similar note, how are you guys working deadlifts? As in, 5x5 all working sets, ramping up to a main set, or certain percentages, etc…
Conventional.
5/3/1.
I’ve recently started doing RDLs and I’m going to throw in deficit deads now because I can’t get the bar off the floor. blah
How are you liking 5/3/1 in general and for deadlifts? It seems a lot of people are doing it but then I see posts like “I got ___x2 and now 5 cycles later I nailed (same weight)x5”, that’s like 20 weeks though right? Doesn’t seem too great of progress unless they’re really advanced. I’ve actually heard that a few times about 5/3/1, being better for those who are more advanced.
I like it because I set rep records every week.
And to clarify, 275 use to be really difficult and now its very easy. It may only be 3 more reps, but it was a huge improvement. I probably could’ve gotten more, but I was content with 5 reps when 1 rep was prescribed.
I’m open to trying new programs if anyone has any suggestions.

5/3/1 works really, really well. The improvements may not seem as much, but you can set new (rep) PRs every time you set a foot in the gym. I feel like 5/3/1’s greatest strength is it’s way of progressing. I believe you add 10 pounds to deadlift/squat each cycle, and 5 pounds to bench and military. lets say you can do 8 cycles before stalling out, that’s a whopping 80 pounds increase.
I believe the book only costs 20 bucks and even if you’re not gonna do 5/3/1, you can still learn a lot from it.
Sorry for sounding like a damn add, haha. ; )

This is a little misleading in 2 respects:
- You initially have to cut your 1rm by 90% and you start out with lighter weights for a few cycles. So while it may be an 80 lb. increase, you initially cut like 30 pounds off. And just because your training max increases doesn’t mean your 1rm increases in-step. My DL regressed on 531 despite hitting above the prescribed reps for a number of cycles.
- But, with proper programming inside 531, you can increase your 1rm more than just the standard progression on the program. Working with only a 240 training max (aka, highest I went was 230), I hit 275 on bench.

I agree with the 1rm max thing. Mine hasn’t gone up as much. What proper programming are you referring to?
Also, what other deadlift programs would you all recommend?
edit: I’m gonna try the Coan/Phillipi routine.
