I have had varying degrees of shitty bars to work with lately, all of them chrome. Yesterday doing mid-shin rack pulls on the other side of town, I found a branch of my gym that has the dark ones with good knurling.
Are the good bars dark, or are the ones I like just always rusty and old? I dont know anything about bar differences, but i feel like it affects my pull a lot to the point that Im going to start driving to the branch with the good bars for DLs.
Can anyone educate me on what the difference is?
Am I sane, crazy or just looking for excuses for my shitty progress this month (jk, i think)?

milktruck, you may be right, the darker ones offer more grip due to the lack of ‘shiny polished loveliness’. the knurling is deeper and more pronounced and they are slightly thinner in diameter meaning you can wrap your hands all the way around for a more secure grip. the above pick is with said dark bar. the new ones i spoke of are gay chrome ones with a fater diameter that slip out my hands even when chalked up with less weight loaded on

Hit 410 about two weeks ago. I’m looking to improve my form and hopefully pull 435 or more at my meet in July. I’d like to pull the big 5 plates by the end of the year.
Also looking to switch from conventional to sumo.

you sticking to regular sized plates right now?
2 weeks ago I PR’d at 215kg / 474lb. It went up pretty easily so next time I max I’m hoping for that elusive 500! Running Full Body 5/3/1. I added good mornings back into my routine 2 cycles ago and I’m pretty sure this is where my gains came from.
Pulled 180 from a 2 3/4" deficit last Thursday, and had 190 moving and got it mid shin before I let it go (didn’t plan on hitting a 1RM or doing heavy work). Today pulled 200 clean and smooth @ 77 BW. I’ve managed 200 before at 82 and 83kg but they were pretty hitched. Happy with that, at 6 weeks out from a meet, numbers are looking good.
Was worried deadlift would suffer switching to Westside style (squatting twice and deadlift accessory work) but it hasn’t at all. Loving it.
well i’ll throw my hat in and give this a try, and im close. my last powerlifting meet at the end of july i pulled 474. it was hell and i burst a bunch of blood vessels in my 8 second pull. but i am confident i can hit it by the end of the year.

Same max as me - race on! =)

lol. and i have only pulled once since that meet and that was sumo, which i had never done before. i am doing a lot more squats for now. i focused a crap ton on my dead and hardly squatted and added something like 150lbs to my dead in just over a year and only 36lbs to my squat.
im giving that plan another few weeks then back to pulling 1-2 times a week. so you may beat me as im sure my dead will stall for a bit without it being a focus. by the end of the year for sure though.

Haha good stuff man. I squat 3 days per week and box squat twice per week, pull once. I’m an optimist so I’m hoping to hit the 500lb by oct 13th (birthday) but end of year would be relatively acceptable too.
I think even if neither of us trained the deadlift much between now and December, lots of squatting should develop the correct muscles enough to get there.
Managed a new PR, second time I’ve heavy deadlifted in about 2 months. Only pulled 195 at my meet in Oct. Was shagged by the time I got to it. Pulled a new PR of 205 today. Came up alot quicker than I was expecting (not fast, just faster than I thought). Not bad for no deadlifting for ages!
Came to this thread late; my current PR is 200 kg (440 lbs) but I’m feeling as though I’m making good progress with the 5/3/1.
I’m a relatively skinny and tall bastard, so hopefully putting on another 5 kg mass (as I hope to do by January or February) will help me hit the 495 by springtime. My goal is 3x my target bodyweight (80 kg, so 240 kg/528 lbs) by autumn of next year… Ambitious, but doable, I think.
Forgot about this thread. Pulled 600 reverse band a couple days ago, was 450 on the floor and obviously 600 at lockout. I frickin hope that equates to a 495 pull. I will find out either during or after my current training cycle, which has 8 weeks left.

Current tested max is 215kg/474lb.
Last training session I got 180kg x 6 followed by three singles at 205kg.
I’m hoping to hit 227.5kg / 500lb by my birthday October 13th.
Nailed 227.5kg / 500lb three days before my birthday, though it was a shaky fucker!

Tonight I got an easy 220kg with no shaking.
Nice job! I’m hoping to get to 500 someday…maybe sometime in the 2nd half of 2013.
Thanks man. Your max is?
I honestly think squatting 3 days per week has brought my deadlift up, along with loads of chins and kettlebell swings.
