Hey mate, I am a Royal Marine Commando. Passed out a week and a bit ago. Off to 45 commando on the 27th of this month. It is mostly running you need, other than rope climbing and the tarzan and assault course, which is the only thing upperbody really comes into the equation. By your tests you will have slimmed down massively.
Give me a message if you need any help or unsure about anything. Looks like you have it under your thumb though :)) If you can get an 8:30 below 1.5 mile run you will be easily fit enough. Just have to show your determined.

Thanks for dropping in mate, and great job on passing out. I know the weight training is probably a bit overkill but I’m doing more of it recently just to stop me going crazy whilst I can’t run. I’ll be sure to message you about a couple of things, thanks again for offering to answer them.
Gym Type A
Pt1 - 3 continuous rounds of 5 pullups, 15 elbows in pressups, 20 situps, 12 x 10kg Medicine Ball Swings
Pt2 - Press - Bar x 5, 65 x 5, 90 x 3, 110 x 1
DBRow - 55s x 5, 65s x 5, 70s x 5
Pt3 - 3 rounds of 4,6,4 paused pullups, 20,25,15 elbows in pressups, 25,30,25 situps, 12 x 10kg medicine ball swings.
Pushed for time today, kept it short. Sick of not being able to do any leg work. I’m cleared to do leg extensions/curls but the machines upstairs are absolutely gash and put my knees/groin/ankle in a biomechanically unsound position despite me adjusting them. This isn’t a mobility/flexibility issue because other machines have been fine - it’s just these ones are shit. Should be able to train lower body again by next week though.
Press felt weak, rows felt weak but my circuit numbers/work capacity are going up - seems you can’t have everything.
Finally got out on my bike today.
Did around 24 miles - 10 on road, 14 off road.
Was with a different mate this time who is slightly fitter. Although I put that down to him having a lighter bike, a lighter pack, him being 21 lbs lighter than me in mass and just doing more riding than I have.
I will beat him next time! Gym tomorrow - going to go for a yomp/ruck/tab whatever this weekend to test my ankle out and if it holds up then I’ll start squatting/deadlifting the next day - I’m getting withdrawal symptoms.
Flustered morning, had to go into college to get exam results. Couldn’t be arsed dealing with everyone’s faux-niceness and superficiality so I fucked off sharpish to the gym. Hand’t eaten or drank much because of early started - didn’t sleep much either so today was always going to be a bit subdued.
Gym type B
Pt1 - 3 rounds of - Paused pullups 5,7,5 Pressups 15,25,20 Situps 20,30,25 and Deadlifts 10 x 135, 10 x 155, 10 x 135: only rest between rounds was changing plates about.
Pt2 - Db Bench Press/Lateral Raises - 45s x 5/ 10s x 5, 55s x 5/ 15s x 5, 65s x 4/ 15s x 5 (x2)
BB Curls - Worked up to 70 x 5
Would usually have done another round of cricuits after this but felt like shit. DB Bench press felt espcially weak today.
Yes, sleep is vital. Ive been staying up late recently watching TV and youtube etc. Going to sleep early is a habit.
How did your exams go? What do you study?
tweet
No doubt, sleep is a big part of training/recovery.
My exams went well, thanks for asking.
Gym Type A
Pt 1 - Deadlifts - 135 x 10, 225 x 5, 315 x 1, 325 x 1
Squats - Bar x 12, 90 x 10, 135 x 5, 155 x 5, 165 x 1
Pt 2 - Rd 1 - 6 pullups w/ 1 count hold top and bottom, 20 elbows in pressups, 25 situps, 12 x 12 lb laterals
Rd 2 - 8 pullups, 25 pressups, 30 situps, 10 x 15 lb lateral raises
Rd 3 - 6 pullups, 15 pressups, 2o situps, 8 x 15 lb lateral raises
Pt 3 - Overhead Press - 90 lbs x 1, 110 x 1, 120 x 1
Cable Curl supserste w/ rear delt raises - worked up in 4 sets to 12s x 12/ 110 lbs x 10
Have been cleared to run on road and weight train on my ankle again so made sure to train lower body. I usually wouldn’t squat and deadlift together but it felt okay. Squats were nice and easy, even paused the last one in the hole, I should have gone heavier.
Struggled today though to get into it both mentally and physically. Went out on Friday after exam results and ended up sleeping in a barn on a chair that looked like something pulled from the set of the Adam’s family: the barn even had bats flying round in it I think, such was the occasion… and I’ve felt shit ever since.
Also, training has been too spontaneous for my liking. I prefer having a set plan rather than training to alleviate bordeom like I have been doing. The cause of this is injury - my routine relies heavily on me being able to run, box and train lower body, none of which I’ve been able to do properly. When the new college term starts and the ankle is firing properly I’ll be training things when I plan on training them and not when some ‘professional’ says so. Injury is a part of training, and when it inevitably happens again I’ll suck it up and train around it rather than moan about it.
Nice training mate.

Cheers mate
Went for a night yomp last night, with a bit of a twist.
Didn’t weigh the rucksack but it felt around 30 lbs.
Me and two friends wore blindfolds, got in a friends car and got driven to a drop off point around 10 - 15 miles away. We then had to figure out where we were on the map and navigate back.
It was a bit creepy. The moor we were on is very indistinct with not many features to navigate from but ultimately we managed it in around 5 hours or so.
Not a rapid time by any means but the time spent navigating added up quickly and it’s difficult to move at the same speed over rough ground at night compared with daytime.

Gym
Training today was a bit eclectic. Trying to get stuff in before I go backpacking for the best part of a week.
Deadlift - 135 x 10, 225 x 5, 315 x 1 (flew up)
DB Bench Press - 45s x 5, 55s x 5, 65s x 3, 80s x 1 (had at least 3 in)
Squat - bar x 10, 90 x 5, 135 x 5, 155 x 3, 175 x 1 (flew up)
Press - bar x 10, 90 x 5, 110 x 1
Threw in sets of continuous pullups, pressups, situps between lifts - best was 10 paused pullups, 40 elbows in pressups, 40 situps. This too, like everything else, was taken easy. Need to save my energy for this coming week.

at the moment I’m still in school, but I only have another year left at which point I’ll apply.
got back off backpacking not long ago.
averaged about 15/16 miles a day for 4 days - carried around about 40 lbs
weight, distance, time was nothing groundbreaking but as it was a criteria test for a scheme that I was taking part in no more was required.
there were restrictions meaning our team couldn’t enter shops or recieve help on the way so we could only eat what we were carrying - as such because of the long days and little food/sleep I’ve lost a little weight.
next two weeks I’m just going to spend in the gym - I need a mental break from the same type of training too.
Gym - Pull
Stiff Arm Pulldowns - 90 x 12,10,8 (just to get blood in the lats)
Deadlift - 135 x 12, 225 x 5, 315 x 1, 225 x 5, 135 x 12
Neutral grip/pronated pullups, alternating sets - 8,6,6,4
DB Row - 55s x 6, 65s x 5,6
Rear Delt Raises - 12s x 12, 15s x 10,8
BB Curl - bar x 12, 45 x 10, 70 x 8, 80 x 5
Cross Body Hammer Curls - 15s x 10, 22s x 8,6
Better than expected considering hangover but still poor. 315 felt very tough. Friends have commented that I’m looking thinner but I can’t decide whether they think I look thinner or leaner in which there is a big difference. Regardless, going to be just gyming it for next 3 days or so - it’s nice to have a bit of a change of scene even if pure weight training isn’t ‘beneficial’ for me in the long run.

Right on, good luck man, ever since I’ve seen some of the vids on youtube of the Commando tests I’ve had serious respect for the Royal Marines.
