I've Lost My Deadlift!!

I’m going to be as concise and to the point as possible:

On Sunday, I attempted a PR of 8 sets of 3 repetitions with 365 pounds. I made it to set 6 before I literally couldn’t lift the weight off of the floor. Later on in the day, I was able to perform 2 sets of 12 repetitions with 255 pounds.

Earlier today, I attempted to pull 355 for 6 sets of 4 reps…and couldn’t! Tried 3/4 rep deads off of the safety pins of a squat rack, but that didn’t work.

Long story short, I’ve apparently lost the ability to Deadlift. I want to end this NOW and am open to suggestions/solutions.

Sounds like you over reached on the total volume and frequency. Heavy deads are very taxing to both the metabolic and neurological recovery systems.

More is not allways better. Give it a break. It will come back.

I suggest you try resting and fueling up (eating) properly

Quit doing so many reps. If you want to get strong, sets of 1-3 is where it’s at.

Speed work once a week - singles only.

Heavy pulling (3x3, etc) on a separate day each week with some DL variation (snatch grip, deficit pulls, rack pulls, etc.).

Once a month, take a 1RM attempt as part of your speed work.

Agreed. You just hit your wall man. That’s a lot of deadlifting and a lot of stress on your body.

Like above said back the hell off how many times a day are you dling let alone a week. man if I go heavy on DL over 85% it a week before I should try anything like that again. DL’s are very taxing.

To steal a phrase (i.e. it’s not mine)…

Fatigue masks performance.

I agree.
You need to be getting enough sleep and eating more.
Whenever I finish deadlifting I always get hungry,so I always make sure to fuel up before deadlifting.

That means plenty of high quality carbs for breakfast and some pre-workout if you have to(bananas, apples, milk, cocoanut milk,etc.).
Chances are if you’re dealing with a lot of stress you’ll need more sleep too.Stress sure can effect your workouts,so try avoiding any stressful situations that will make you too stressed out to hit the weights hard!

Cheers

Thank you, all of you.

Looks like this overachiever’s gonna have to grit his teeth and cut back a bit…It’ll be hard at first (Like Eric, I love Deadlifting), but I guess I have to keep reminding myself of how a bit of rest now will be beneficial in the long run.

Again, I can’t thank you guys enough for taking the time to read this thread and respond.

You have gotten some good advice, a couple of things. Fist, don’t deadlift two times in one day as it sounds like you did in the first paragraph. Second, don’t deadlift heavy more than once a week. Third, don’t go until failure on deads when you are repping, when your form breaks down stop.

Finally, I do think someone at your level (and almost all strength levels) will benefit from doing some reps on the deads but you don’t have to do them all the time. Maybe try one week of doing 1-3 working sets of 5-12 reps and then on the other week do EC’s recs of the mutliple sets for 1-3 reps. I never got anything out of a speed day on deads but if your form is weak it might help you. Good luck with it.

Ya man, your deadlifting way too much. I used to try deadlifting 3x a week, and in 2 weeks I just couldn’t life the damn weight up anymore. Of course it’s all like “what the hell” because you KNOW you can do it. Anyways rest for a bit, and eat lots. Then go at it again strong, you’ll see a difference.
