I've Got the Shits

I am new to this whole body building thing. I just got serious like 6 months ago - but have been lifting for track and football for 10 years.

Anyway…I started drinking a lot of whey protein and egg protein powder mix crap and have been doing so for like 5 months. This stuff makes me shit like no other and when i am not shitting I am farting…this is a serious issue. I figured it was just my body getting used to new things i was putting into it, but its been 5 months…

anyone else have this problem and/or know of some protein that won’t force me to make pepto bismol and beano part of my everyday diet?

From my experience, and from what I’ve heard from others, you’re probably consuming an inferior quality protein powder. I used to buy the cheap stuff wherever I could get it, and had the same problem, but started buying Metabolic Drive and it got much better.

Chris Shugart has suggested “chewing” your shakes, as the chewing motion releases digestive enzymes in your saliva that you otherwise wouldn’t get by swallowing. Don’t know if it actually works, but it’s worth a try.

Also, if you’re mixing milk with those shakes, lots of dairy in general will do that to you. Try Lactaid if that’s the case.

Adding veggies to your diet will probably help.

Gawd, note to newbies:
“Bodybuilders probably pass gas more than any other humans except for pro lineman, Sally Struthers and Roseanne Barr.”

Note 2:
Fiber is your friend. Benefiber is tastless and mixes easily with powdered protein.

Note 3:
If you think someone the size of Ronnie Coleman or Jay Cutler isn’t taking brontosaurus sized shits, you don’t understand what is involved. I have no doubt that their bathrooms look like that scene on Jurassic Park after ThanksGiving dinner.

Note 4:
If this offends your delicate sensibilities to any large degree and the idea of eating more than the average human is something you simply can’t bare to think of…don’t expect to make much progress.

Note 5:
if you are lactose intolerant, drink lactose free milk. As a beginner, I think the benefits of drinking milk far outweigh some gastric discomfort unless it is extreme. Someone more advanced or with extreme lactose intolerance can either keep it or ditch it.

What’s with the people on this site and their fascination with Ronnie Coleman? There are other bodybuilders out there too you know. Sheesh.

You’ve got some good advice here so far. I’d recommend looking into digestive enzymes, Omegazyme is a good brand. Also, look into a enteric coated probiotic. Those two things help out big time.

You only get half a point for that one.

From what I’ve found, my stomach eventually got used to it. Same with BCAA’s or fish oil… both used to fuckin kill me, but after a couple weeks I don’t think twice anymore.

I did find it happens less with the Metabolic Drive than when I was using other sorts of proteins, but that might be because Biotest’s doesn’t taste like cardboard dipped in horse shit like most of them do.

That’s like saying there are other female figure competitors than Jamie and Gina.

This one was mentioned above, but I’ll second it here…

Fiber will save your arse…pun intended.

The el’cheap-o store brand fiber tablets worked for me…

Yeah, like… Jelena.

this happens to me too. it doesn’t matter which brands of protien powder i use, the quality or anything. i think it happens when you just eat too much protien. people recommend between .5 grams and 2.0 grams of protien per pound of lean body weight depending on who you talk too, yet nobody knows for sure how much is actually enough.

my theory is that recommendations go along the lines of “too much is better than not enough” and many of us wind up eating so much that our bodies just shit it out.

try cutting back a tad on the protien. you’ll still get gains and you may cut back on the shits and gas.

listen to your bodies signs and stop overloading it.

also, try apple cider vinegar. i’m not personally a fan of supps other than whey after a work out and now HOT-ROX, but i tried the stuff when i was sick on my girlfriends, grandmothers suggestion after over the counter medicines didn’t work and it cleared me right up.

i researched it and found it does all kinds of cool shit, mostly it helps with digestion by making your stomach more acidic, which could help breakdown more of the protien you are eating.

it smells like real vinegar and tastes like shit, but once you get used to it, it is ok.

you should look in to it. you’ll be glad you did.

try this link, it is from a retailer due to search optimization, but if you do your own research you’ll find their info is accurate from independent studies too.

for a cheaper alternative that does the same thing and more, try the apple cider vinegar.

I beg to differ. Apple cider vinegar is good for digestive problems, but acts more like a weaker version of add HCL. Probiotics serve a different function…to repopulate the intestinal flora with good bacteria.

I agree with the idea that you should get a good quality product. You might also want to determine if you are sensitive to milk or egg. For example, you could cut out the egg protein for a week and see if that helps. If it doesn’t cut out the whey for a week and see if you still suffer.

If you’re eating things like protien or health bars watch out for “sugar alcohols” like sorbitol, maltitol, mannitol, xylitol, and other glycerol-type ingredients. They give many people explosive diarrhea or even irratable bowel syndrome.

Also, some protien powders come with an enzyme blend to aid in digestion (Aminogen and lactase).

Good luck and stand down wind from us!

Wha’s the problem with excessive gas?
OP I would love to increase the duration, volume and noise level of mine what protein do you use so I to may receive the same results?

I was about to say the same thing.

C’mon now, I know somebody else here has dropped a particularly impressive log and felt the need to display it like a proud fisherman.

The farts arent the loud long ones. If you want a description they are like this: Generally SBDs (silent but deadly…), usually tiny with the stench of a million fatmen spurting diarrhea. The poignant stink diffuses throughout the room residing until the next one occurs. Furthermore, these farts are the questionable ones, the ones that you think to yourself, “Oh god, I really hope I didn’t just shit.”

This is a serious problem.

Oh, and it is GNC Pro Performance MEGA WHEY that fuckin kills me. Is this not quality?

also, anyone have a link to where I can buy some good “quality” protein as you all have suggested?

Thanks.

Well, I am lactose intolerant. So I am pretty sure it is the whey. But even taking supplements like lactaid with it doesnt help.
