elbows out, yep I kinda avoid those too since surgery. Maybe I’ll try some light weight high rep work there…it seemed work for my overhead presses…
Good luck at the meet !!

thanks, gonna have to find someone to take them, think I should be ok
So, slept in today, thinking like most meets the dling wouldn’t happen until late afternoon. Finally dragged my lazy fat ass outta bed around 9:30 and puttered around. A little after 11 my friend Dammstrate texts me that benching is starting in ten minutes. Oh shit. Scarfed some pancakes that were leftovers from the kids breakfast the other day, downed a shake, some supplements, some nsaids, some ephedra, grabbed my food cooler, gym bag, and jumped into the Charger and cursed every other driver on the road.
Made it there and settled down, watched some benching, did the most boring warm ups in the world: 135 x 10, 225 x some, 315 x some, 405 x some, 495/585 x 1.
Opener was set at 650, no problem, for a age/weight class deadlift only national record.
Second 677 not much problem either, but my left hand ripped open pretty bad in the process. Still a meet PR for me, raw or equipped.
705 was a fucking no go, mentally and due to the hand. Next time.
705 should have been an easy finish for me, but I did some stupid stuff training wise, meet prep cycle wise, and largely skin care wise. I am an idiot when it comes to taking care of my calluses. And never, ever ever go to the bar after ripping you hand wide open deadlifting and then order fish and chips, and squeeze the lemon with said hand. Never!!!
Good job Pete. I know you can get 700 but 677 is still a big pull.
As far as the calluses go have you ever tried sponges. I have been using them for over 20 years and love them. What I use now aren’t actually sponges but very similar. It is a spongy type pad they sell at auto parts stores to put underneath your back when you are working underneath the car. I cut thin square pieces off. I use them on all but my heaviest sets and calluses have never caused me any problems. I’m not lifting your numbers but I bench over 350 and ohp press around 250 so I use them doing some decent numbers.
Nice work, Pete.
Regarding the hand, how do you “take care” of your calluses?

Hmm. Never done anything for my calluses. Just let them be calluses. The phone isn’t exactly ringing off the wall for hand modeling jobs, I’ll admit. But I’ve never ripped one.
Solid pull coach

check my fb page. I fell pretty girly about this but shit, now way I was grippin g that tx dl bar with a bloody hand and pulling it up
strong pulling Pete
Its pretty awesome hitting an age/weight class deadlift only national record on you opener and then pulling even more with a bloody hand. 700 will fall in a meet soon enough, great work!
I’ve dealt with calluses for most of my life with skiing, and it may sound gross, but in pinch I can gnaw them down with my teeth so they don’t tear. I’ve been in multi-round slalom events where I knew if they didn’t come down they’d tear and I’d be done for jump the next day, with teeth being my only tools available.
That flew up.
