It's Time to Lose Fat

I just read the article Phoenix Theory and it is right i need to do something about my self. While i am not fat or am a bit chubby. I rather get rid of the fat early then have it pack on for a long time. Please anybody here can you help me?

I am 14
128 pounds
5’7
Male

The only workout i actully ever did was the 30 day mass plan. It gave me amazing results but then i was still a noob and i left it after day 17. I am going to try this again and go all the way this time the thing with the 30 day mass though is that it gives you time for other work outs. Does anybody have suggestions about which things i should do to lose fat?

Problems i might have: I cant control what i eat to much because i dont make my food.

It would be very hard to get to a gym and my school gym is normally for sports team if it is not closed.

I have a home gym and dumbell and i will buy anything else if needed.

Thanks for reading

heh…

It seems to me that you already answered your own questions. The main problem is that at your age picking your foods will do you more good than working out will(it’s not the same for all…) because at your age alot of kids don’t really fill out right. You also said that the gym is for sports teams only…have you ever considered joining the track team, swim team, or football team(whatever team they have?), because that would go a long way in giving you access to weights and even coaches who can help you. Either way your mind is on the right track.

Hope this helps…good luck

Hey bud, good job at looking into weight training at your age, it is a very solid start just to get interested. Now, from what I see, you don’t seem like a big person being 128 at 14 and 5’-7", so you probably are looking to gain some clean mass. First thing I would do, as the poster above mentioned, is join some sort of team. Now, I know you may not want to do this, but promise me, in the end you will love doing it. My best suggestion, join the Track team, both winter and spring, and go out as a field person. Get into throwing disc, shot and Jav. You will have more access to the weights, and a coach that should know something about solid strength and weight training. Also, if you go out as a field person, you won’t have to worry about the long distance and sprints that a track person would have to go through, which is enough to turn any non-athletic person away, but you will still get some cardio work in as a thrower, allowing you to slowly progress into more cardio if you wish.

I did football, winter and spring track all 4 years of high school and loved every second of it. I miss being able to participate in those sports more than anything, so do them now while you can.

Start packing your lunch whenever you can. And see if you may be able to pack some mid morning and afternoon snacks in your locker. If worst comes to worst, pre-pack protein powder in a water bottle and grab some water out of the fountain while changing classes. But, try to get most of your nutrients from solid foods if possible. Hell, an insulated lunch bag and some freezer packs could work wonders for you.

I’d speak to the head of the phys ed department if I were you. The weight room should be available to all students in the school.

In my experience the reason they close the gym is for insurance reasons, ie they don’t want to be held responsible if someone gets hurt in there. When this occured in my highschool a bunch of us managed to talk them into training us to be “weight room supervisors” so that as long as one of us was present the weight room could be opened. That may not be possible anymore as schools have become more anal about legal crap in the past 10 years, and I think the States are worse than Canada when it comes to stuff like this.

Of course joining a school team is also a good option. It’s a great way to learn a lot of skills as well as to make a close group of friends.

with regards to food, I bet if you approached your parents with your healthy goals and had some menu suggestions they would likely help you out. As long as money isn’t an issue I can’t imagine any good parents not aiding their child in becoming healthier.

Well for the weight room sports thing i cant get onto a team now because tryouts for winter sports which were Track, and Basketball are done. For the Spring i will definatly try to figure out what sports i can go for. For the summer and fall though if i gain enough and become more healthy i will try for football.

Also i asked my gym teacher and he said that around mid January the weight room will probably be open for everybody i can do that. While i dont have much control over my food i started following the rule where you have to weight 20 min before having seconds. Until i get to the gym i have a home gym is there any good workouts i can do with that for weight loss or fat loss along with the 30 day mass plan?

btw thanks for replying guys.

What type of equipment do you have in your home gym?

I started training when I was 14 for 6 months then I stopped for 3 years, I really regret not following through.

I can do pull downs, squats, and most basic things including new things if you a suggestion i also have a bowflex type of thing which i can do the above stuff on and it is in great condtion i think i can do any type of excercise on it.

I respect you and wish I had followed up my urge to get healthier when I was your age.

I think paying attention to diet at your age is… while not a waste of time, not quite as important as when you get older. Dan John’s tips for teaching youth better nutrition goes something like this:

eat breakfast
eat protein at every meal
eat something with fiber at every meal
get 8+hours of sleep.
Follow that and you’ll be solid on nutrition.

Losing fat means busting your ass. Let me rephrase that. Losing fat means running. Intervals. Wind-sprints. Hill-sprints, and lots of them.

Changing your appearance means lifting heavy shit. I think the bowflex is a waste of space. The only thing you need is a barbell and some weights. Deadlift. Clean and Jerk. Squat.

As for a more finely detailed plan… man up and read the stickies at the top of the forum. They will give you plenty of information.

If I were you, id walk on to wrestling or swimming or both if possible, then from there do cross country, do something you like over the summer, then football and repeat. You are at an age, that constant physical sport will do amazing things for your body. When I was 14 I was 5’7 230 lbs, FATTTT. I took up football, which is a sport where half of the work you do is lifting, and then I did wrestling. By the end of wrestling season, I was a lean 171. You should really try it out and STICK WITH IT.

i agree at that age dont worry about your body, worry about your habits.

dont drink soda. drink nothing that has calories.

that alone will save you endless grief in the future.

also, find a sport you enjoy. if you arent ‘gifted’ something like frisby can help ease you into the idea.

dont try and get too clever, at your age its very easy to get the wrong end of the stick and do yourself more harm than good.

As my good friend above said get into good habits. Dump the fizzy juice and drink water. Make sure you eat breakfast, that is the easiest one to skip, but the most important one to take.

At your age I was playing a ton of sport, and in good shape because of it. However I will reiterate what Chutec said… find a sport you enjoy. Join a club or whatever. Regularly taking part in sport is a good place to start for your goals.

14 is a tender age to be getting haphazardly into weights, the body still has a lot of growing to do. I suggest you trawl this site for information, there is tons of it. Soak up as much as you can, learn about nutrition and safe lifting.

I wouldn’t worry about losing fat - keep improving in your lifts and everything will take care of itself as you get just a bit older. Keep reading everything on here, join a sport (doesn’t matter if you suck at it - show up and work hard and good things will happen) and eat your meat and veggies.

k guys thanks for all the replys. I have stopped drinking sodas for the last 2 weeks but i am drinking coke zero instead of coke, or water instead of sprite. I know that water would be the best but i dont think i can do that for every meal.

Breakfast isnt normally a good meal for me. I normally dont eat to much, I normally have 2 granolla bars with a big glass of milk or waffles and OJ. For sports again i cant join a team this season but next season i will try. Also should i really stop lifting? I heard it was safe for me to train at 14 does anybody have any more info on that?

sorry but i kind of need to know if i am alowwed to workout anybody?

It’s up to your parents but yes, it is safe for a 14 year old to workout.

exrx.net/WeightTraining/Weightlifting/YouthMisconceptions.html

workout by all means.

if you sit on your ass that will stunt your growth too.

children are supposed to be running around and testing the limits of their body.

as long as you arent wearing a weight belt and going red and veiny in the face itll be fine.

  1. “I normally have 2 granolla bars with a big glass of milk or waffles and OJ.”

if you do 1 thing - sort this out. milk - fine, waffles - crap, granolla bars - crap, orange juisce - waste of space - empty calories.

  1. If you want to do a second thing - cut all calorie drinks out. coke zero - crap, sprite - crap. there is no value in them whatsoever and they do people the most harm because no one ever sees the calories and sugar because its in drink form.
i know coke zero has no sugar but its still 200 calories which does absolutely nothing for you.

if you cut out the shitty drinks now youll have a serious advantage over most people for the rest of your life. you wont end up having to drink 5 cups of coffee and 3 cans of coke a day to just stay awake.

  1. sports doesnt have to be something you have to qualify for a team in. if you dont make the cut, or its too late this season, go join whoever at your school runs non official sports clubs/groups. as i said frisby is just as valid as american football - you will not injure yourself and if you treat it like exercise its alot like HIIT training (try playing in the wind for a better workout ;])
