It Vexes Me. I'm Terribly Vexed

Moving out your stance isn’t solving your fundamental problem of having a crappy starting position. You need to flex you lower back hard prior to pulling to get it into a more neutral position (slight anterior pelvic tilt). If you figure that one out, you will solve your lockout issues and will be able to get to 600+. Muscleling shit up will get you only so far.

Rippetoe wrote about it here on TN. While he is kind of a fucktard, he was dead on with that advice.
I’ll need to improve my flexibility. I can’t get down to the bar with my lower back arched that hard. I’m not even sure it’s my hamstrings that are too tight though, it feels like my literal lower back muscles can’t stretch enough to facilitate the setup.
I bet you could do it today with some proper hands-on coaching. The key to get into the right position is to use the bar weight/“pre-pull” as a means to set your hips. Hard to explain.

Take it all in stride brotha stay focused! I think your arms are made out of stretch armstrong material, that is the only explanation for your insane pulls. You’ll have more time to make money in the future, do what is important to yourself and family!

Currently angry at my finals studying schedule for getting in the way of my training.

What #'s (other than 495 obviously) are you looking to hit?

225kg
237.5kg or 240kg
250kg

Those are my attempts.

Biggest Deadlift in the South sounds pretty bad ass. Good luck. Which weight class are you trying to compete in? Sorry again if you already said this earlier and I missed it.

I’ll be in the 198’s. Training partner is going for 630+ in the 181’s. Steve Goggins is hopefully gonna pull 800 raw at the tender age of 50.

God Damn. Please get a video of that.

To play off of i_s, I have similar lockout issues and have figured it to be starting position related after hammering sldls, kb swings, bridges, etc with no improvement.

My focus was to get my chest up more at the initial pull and have done it with a couple different adjustments. From my previous, hip width - toes forward stance, I brought my heels closer together to have my toes angled out at 35-40%. I also widened my grip only about 1/4 inch on either side. This has allowed my to sit down a little further and I feel I get a better contraction in my glutes at lockout. Also trying to get my eyes forward at the initial pull without hyperextending at the neck. I’m not getting the same pop off the floor, but its not as slow as my damn sumo pull.

In a throwing everything against the wall fashion, I’m also doing mobility work on my ankles and hips.

Specifically, STB’s “unfunk your junk box”
http://youtu.be/4-ohKAT_we8

couch stretch
http://youtu.be/-ZX1QMTdAC4

and working on my positioning in squat hole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XwKnk16Zbs&feature=share&list=PL0B1704E8B4BFD8BD&index=1

I do these between my warm ups and whenever I think about it at the house (which isn’t often enough). I feel like my deadlift is improving now and I definitely am feeling a positive effect on my squats. 2 birds, 1 stone

Is the 250kg a PR or have you hit it in training?

Good luck, definitely video if you can.

250kg/550lbs would absolutely be a PR, and a good milestone for me. There is nothing gym related that I want as badly as a 600lb deadlift.

I have hit 240kg/530lbs in training.

IS thanks very much for the insight.

Also huge thanks for the vids mahwah. I will absolutely check that out. In fact next week when I am deloading I will be focusing intensely on exactly that kind of stuff to get my back as recovered as possible.

Nice!

You certainly have the attitude to get there.

Don’t you have a sitting job? Also, do you even stretch pre workout?

Hit my opener for the meet next weekend:

And that’s all I had time for. Had to go to a Christmas gig rehearsal downtown. And I’ve got a fucking concert today, so I’ll have to go to the little 24 hour gym afterwards and hit upper back and biceps. It surprises me sometimes how furious and offended I get when people/things interfere with my ridiculously unreasonable training schedule no matter how legitimate the reason. I never feel like they understand what a massive inconvenience it is for me to have to change anything about my training.
Hahaha. You are a cool guy, I like you.

Indeed I do have an office job where I’m on my rump all the time. I do stretch pre-workout though. I go through a pretty extensive lower body mobilization routine. I doubt though that it can undo the 8 hours of sitting beforehand.

DB Row:
100’s 20x
100’s 15x
100’s 15x Goddammit I hate this exercise. I literally have not done these in probably a year. I just didn’t see anything else to do for my upper back in the little 24 hour gym.

Pullups:
3 sets of 10

EZ Bar Curls:
70 for 4 sets of 10
Damn even with light weight I felt that more than like anything in my biceps. Why did I ever stop doing these?

Preacher Curl Machine:
4 sets of 10

Face Down Incline DB Curls:
25’s for 4 sets of 10

That 24 hour place that I have a super cheap membership to as a backup gym is so weird. There is a squirt bottle attached to literally every piece of equipment in the gym, and there are paper towell dispensers everywhere. All the people there are weirdly obsessed with wiping off everything [i[before and after they use it. It looks more like some kind of janitor training simulator than a gym.
