How ‘hardcore’ is your gym? Where i train at, XSport Fitness in Lombard, we’ve got an ON sponsored natty, a guy who’s placed top 5 in Masters nats twice, and NPC judge who’s been competing for almost 3 decades, and a guy who took 2nd in his class at junior nats this year. We’ve got 3 or 4 other guys competing and a handful of competitive powerlifters. For a commercial gym there’s a lot of meatheads and some figure competitors as well.
So, what’s your facility like?
It’s a hike but I may have to come check it out sometime.

I workout at the air force base I live on. They have tons of shit. We have a lot of guys that come in from all the branches to workout. A lot of big guys movin a lot of iron, expecially from the af powerlifting team. Makes it a really inspirational place to workout.
I assume that you are stationed at Scott AFB. I did some searching a while ago and was not aware the AF has a powerlifting team. Is there tryouts for the AF team, and do you have any info to share?
Not really, it has everything you need except they need more weights and squat racks and areas for free weights. They dont encourage deadlifts but fuck them i do them anyway. Luckily they are getting rennovated soon, but if its all for pussy ass cardio and no weights then im bailing. There is only one strong guy at the gym who i assume is an ex powerlifter. Hes old now and most definitely not competing but i occasionally see him shrugging 260kg.
I work out in two gyms, one at my work during lunch that is pretty bad… It has a smith press and dumbbells that goes up to 65lbs only. The rest of the equipment consists of a pulldown machine with so many pulleys, you can 1-hand the stack, a very old universal style leg press, a pec deck machine, then a leg machine that does curls/extensions, then another pulley machine for cable rows and pulldowns. Oh and not to forget the universal bench press machine that goes up to 98.5kg and it’s unfortunate, but I’m the only person there that can bench the full 98.5 and I’ll do it for 12-15 reps. I’ll jimmy-rig two dumbells on the as well, if I’m going to push around 80% or more of my max… I’m waiting for one of the guys to build a “hook” at his blacksmithing class, so I can hook it onto the stacks and add plates… Oh and it’s got a chin-up bar.
In essence, if you can visualize a large rectangular room, then cut it in half, as they pull this wall divider out for all the yoga classes. Then take the remaining space and cut that into thirds. Two-thirds of the space is taken up with 2 treadmills, a horribly cheap stair climber, two exercise bikes (one from the 70’s with the “tension” control band on the wheel), 1 sitting exercise bike, and 2 rowing machines.
The ‘free-weight’ area fits into about a 15x15 space…
The other gym I go to at night is the local rec center… It’s a decent facility with great equipment… Someone really knew something, as it’s 90% free-weights, benches, squat racks, etc. Dumbells go up to 150lbs…
Why do people say “Blood sweat and Tears”? I understand sweat and tears but were does the blood come in? Other then scraping your legs from deadlift(which can be avoided with long pants) i dont why people say the Blood part of that phrase lool
My garage. It’s a power rack, 2 barbells, and about 300lbs of plates. Great for some squatting and DLing, or auxillary work. Also, close to home. Like 10 feet away, in fact.
YMCA. It has a squat rack, a few useful machines, and some dumbbells.
Aspen. It’s a definite “fitneth thenter” but has some very nice equipment, but I just started lifting there. Love it.
BODY TECH. The best of the best. It has dumbbells up to 160, every Hammer Strength machine you could think of, specific deadlift and rack pull platforms, a monolift, and it’s where nearly every body builder in Oklahoma trains. I fucking love it, but it’s about a 30 minute drive from home. Totally worth it.
I guess the place where I train out could be called hardcore. We’ve got a lifting platform, some strongman equipment, heavy dumbbells and so on. A lot of quite strong people train there, got some elite level powerlifters and strongmen. We don’t have many good bodybuilders though.
I don’t really care whether it’s hardcore or not, the important thing is that there’s a bunch of really good and knowledgeable people there. The inspiration you get from training around serious lifters is awesome.

Where you at now? in the city there’s quads, Bridgeview has USA, Joliet has World, Aurora has frantz and AHP. As long as you’re not north there should be a good gym within reasonable distance.
My gym is hardcore. It is set up inside of a garage at my apartment complex. The gym consists of a raised platform that includes a power rack, chin up bar, array of dumbbells, 715 pounds of plates, and the two highly motivated owners. The gym operates year round and temperatures vary from 18 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a place of raging workouts. We call it “THE CHAMBER”. It is a place of suffering and hardship, but also a place of victory and freedom.
I work out in my schools weight room. Haha, a few box squat thingies, pull up bars, a few benches, tons of shitty machines. Way to many treadmills/bikes/elipticles, and dumbbells ALL THE WAY UP TO 60 POUNDS. Yeah, its pretty hardcore, we have quite a few 130 pound guys that do curls everyday. I’m getting a membership at this gym called BODY not too far from my house as soon as I get my car running again. Its owned by a bodybuilder whos a pretty cool guy, I’ve been talking to him a bb for awhile over myspace and stuff.
I train at a small chain gym in the Chicago Land area known as Cardinal Fitness… Im 6’3" 285lbs and im as big as they get. The squat rake is usually used as a curling station till i get in there and do squats while people stare when i rep out 405lbs. Its good cuz its 5mins from home but not alot of inspiration when im hearing miley cirus from the ceiling speakers… Switching to Life Time Fitness

You aren’t as big as they get.
This was not a thread about how cool you think you are

If I put 2 and 2 together judging on the proximity of cardinal to lifetime you’d probably train at the Cardinal in Darien. That gym is ghey and you don’t rep out shit. You are a troll.
My gym has a dude standing at the door to kick you in the nuts as soon as you walk in and all the water fountains have boiling hot water and all they play on the radio is Miley Cyrus.
I train at 2 gyms that are pretty different- the first is Bray’s Powerhouse, which is awesome, I’d call it hardcore, no women, loud music, really good bunch of competitive lifters and BBers, just my sort of place, but its a bit too far away so I can’t get there very often…the second, which I go to most days is the university gym, full of absolute faggots curling in the squat rack etc. The blokes on the desk are good guys (even though they are CrossFit enthusiasts), and its only five minutes walk away, and right next to the rugby pitch (as seen in my avatar). I wish I could train at the powerhouse every day though!
