Is This Normal?

Hi…I have a quick question. My friend started working out about 4 months ago and his max bench was around 175 pounds. He is tall and skinny (6’4", 185 lbs) and his bench is now at 280. He is not on any steroids and was only on creatine for about a month and a half. I was wondering if 100 pound bench increase in 4 months is normal?

Thats great progress but not out of total question if he started out at 175 the first fifty or so would come in a matter of a few weeks just getting aquainted etc. i imagine if this is true he’s been active hard worker etc.

280 is an impressive bench for someone his build regardless of how long he’s been training. That is awesome progress.

My old roommate went from 155 to 200 even in about 4 weeks after doing 3x20 in the decline bench almost every night. He was pretty new to lifting though so anything would work for him. But about your boy I say it’s not totally out of the question. Some people are just strong, you just gotta have 'em on the weights for a couple months

i went from 150 bench to 245 in 5 months @160 BW.

yeah after 10 weeks i went from a 150kg deadlift to 202.5kg when i first started training, i was about 19. Thats about 110lb increase I think, my bench was always a lot slower though.

Did you see your friend lift these weights? Is he lifting raw, with correct form. Just they are pretty impressive for a guy of that build who has only started lifting.

Impressive gains.

175lbs start is a strong start for a beginner. I don’t think many guys would disagree with that. Totally untrained that is a lot of weight to BP.

So with focused training he can up it a lot.

Either way it isn’t normal to add 100lbs on to your BP within 4months.

The thing is he was lifting before and his bench was up to about 205, but then he quit for about 9 months before he started lifting regularly again.

We were at college about 3 hours away so I never believed him about the weights he lifted, he would be at 245, then a week later, 255, then 2 weeks later 275 and we maxed out a couple days ago and he got 280 with good form.

No pause but not bouncing either. I am just wondering if he is ever gonna stop lol I’m just thinking hes got really good genetics
