I started weight training last May at the age of 50. Seeing improvements but kind of slow and I think my age is the primary factor. Thoughts? Advise?
Slow improvements or not, I think most everyone here would encourage you to keep at it, as weight training is probably the best way to preserve muscle as you age. Even if you’re struggling to build NEW muscle, it will stave off the decline of what muscle you already have.
For more specific advice:
-
describe your program: how many days/week, what type of training (exercises, sets, reps), how consistent are you in following said program, any exercises that you really like/dislike, anything that feels very good/bad, any injuries that must be worked around, what equipment is available
-
describe your diet, in general. Maybe give one specific day’s intake - and not a day that you think will sound “good” but an accurate representation of what you eat on a normal day
The experts here can give more targeted advice if you give a little more to work with!
I turn 50 this year.
It’s never too late to start.
Ask more specific questions if you have them.
kpsnap is already here. Read this aloud to summon more help, RAmelia.
“Though I know I should be wary, Still I venture someplace scary; In the gym I will get tough … Powerpuff, Powerpuff, Powerpuff!”
All of us have to deal with factors that limit progress. These factors can be divided into two categories: Those you can’t control, and those you can. And yes, your age is definitely affecting your rate of progress. But as it is a factor you can’t control, there’s no sense fretting over it. Instead, focus on the factors you can control, namely, your diet, your training and your recovery. As has been mentioned several times above, the folks on this subforum are willing and able to provide input/feedback concerning all three. The only thing I would add is that you need to tell us what your goals are vis a vis weightlifting–that is, are you primarily concerned with getting stronger, vs getting leaner, vs competing in an athletic event, etc.
Oh, and I will turn 53 this year.
Over years ive notice that women tend to respond better to exorcise for aesthetics when they get older which is totally opposite from men.I always had a hypothesis it due to hormonal changes during the ageing process. But what the heck do I know…

I just saw this.
Thank you.
I’m not all that tough. It doesn’t rhyme as well, but she could chant 'lil power. That might actually work.
Sadly, it appears that RAmelia has disappeared into the ether.
I wonder if she’s off helping e-dizzle try to bench 225?
Many studies show improvements in muscle tone and strength can be attained by persons well into their 70s and 80s which means get after it and enjoy kicking some ass. Lifting can improve your mobility, flexibility, your focus, and a bunch of other cool stuff like bone strength. Small goals are great to set and achieve so have fun.

Ahh!! I about fell off my chair. ![]()
My theory is, e-dizzle and RAmelia are the same person. Think about it–have you ever seen them in a photo together? No. No you haven’t.
Coincidence? You be the judge.
