Is That Jack Reacher?!?

I hate to break it to you, but Tom Cruise didn’t do that bad of a job. The movie was much more based on the psychological, the pursuit (see T-Nation tag line), and the piecing of the puzzle. There was action and yes, the little one that is TC pulled it all off well. I would like to tell that Brian Bosworth would make a great Jack Reacher, but “the Boz” doesn’t have the acting chops to pull it off.
They couldn’t do anything but focus on Reacher’s psychology. Christopher McQuarrie said that Cruise was cast primarily for his name, which is really a diplomatic way of saying that the movie’s backers weren’t confident enough that they’d recoup their investment with just the Reacher name and needed an a-lister with a good run of profitable movies to star as added insurance. Paging Tom Cruise…

I hope to see the movie within the next week, mainly because of the positive word of mouth, and yeah, I do watch Tom Cruise movies. I’m actually not surprised that reviews are positive: Mcquarrie directed the underrated Way of the Gun, wrote The Usual Suspects and his brother (an ex-Navy SEAL) is a technical consultant.

I am under no illusions, though, that when I do see it, I will be watching a Tom Cruise vehicle, with a script developed specifically for him. The movie Salt was written with Cruise in mind until he chose to do Knight and Day instead. If he had starred in Salt, the final product would be totally different to the released version starring Angelina Jolie: that’s how much a lead actor can affect a movie’s development.

I’d like to see an objective opinion from someone who has read the books and seen the movie.

Coming from a guy who didn’t read the novels or whatever, here is my take on it:

Tom Cruise basically replays that kind of character in this. He’s the stoic, 0 to 60, badass character. He definitely does not play the typical good guy. I’d even say he’s an anti-hero more than anything.
There is very little running in this movie, almost none, save for one scene where I hardly noticed it. In the entire movie there’s about 5 seconds of tom cruise running.
There is a driving scene, but he constantly loses control of the vehicle and his driving doesn’t seem particularly good. There are no impressive stunts or anything. I actually thought, while watching, “he’s not really good at driving”, so that may be in line with Reacher being a shitty driver.
As for climbing, there is none.
This is more of a thriller than an action movie.

I’ll say that Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher is the Bourne Identity, with a kinder version of the bad guy Tom Cruise plays from Collateral, as the main character.

It doesn’t really matter if Tom Cruise did a good job in this movie.

It’s sort of like bringing home a really good pizza for your son’s birthday party. What you really need to bring home is a really good cake.
To help those that haven’t read the books to understand it would be almost exactly the same as getting Cruise to play Conan.

So I can understand this is a very good movie I just wish they would not have called it Jack Reacher.

By the way, this does not mean I think Tom Cruise is a very good pizza. I never really liked the guy.

TC is like sushi. Some people love him and others get violently sick at the thought of him.

I’m not a Reacher fan or a Tom Cruise fan, but please , stop referring to Tom Cruise as TC.

There is only one TC here, and he is in charge of holiday hams. And although I have only read one Reacher book, I know that TC would make a better Reacher than Tom Cruise.

Taken from wikipedia, a quote attributed to Lee Child… which made me laugh so hard I spilled the coffee on my desk at work today -

"Of Cruise’s relatively small stature, Child said, “With another actor you might get 100% of the height but only 90% of Reacher. With Tom, you’ll get 100% of Reacher with 90% of the height.”[6]

So that is the rationalization Lee Child has come to, huh? I pity all the papercuts he must be getting from sleeping in his bed made from stacks of paper bills to have his creation bought out & portrayed by TC (I mean, Tom Cruise)

Tom Cruise is, & always will be Maverick… Unless he is Jerry Maguire… or Ethan Hunt… or Brian Flanagan from Cocktail… etc.

Still have to go see the movie if he pulls a Collateral & actually makes me like the film

x2. I have not seen a Tom Cruise movie since War of the Worlds and will never watch another.

Good BBC special on Lee Child, has an intresting take on Cruise’s casting …

This x1000… after buying 16 Reacher books, Child let me down big time.

Still a fucken good movie IMO.

Still waiting for that ham, I bet.

Tom Cruise would’ve delivered that ham in NO time. Running, of course.

Fans of the book. I have watched TC and enjoyed his movies.

The character in this book is 6’5" 250 pounds of blond badass.

Not 5’4" and 150 lbs of running fury.
That is a fair point but he’s not 5’4" and until the issue of his height became such gossip did anyone think he was unusually short? Movies can always make an actor look big enough for a role. I never thought a movie of his would have been better if he were only a few inches taller.

Jack Reacher ain’t got nothing on Top Gun or Jerry Maguire.

2/10 and 3/10 from people who read the Reacher books.

Yeah but what did their reviews say?
“OH He’s not 6’4 and 250!! The movie sucked!!”

There’s nothing itself on the movie. Some of the reviews that were 7/10 and above said “yeah ok he’s supposed to be this height and this weight, but on its own, the movie is great”.
So if you want to not enjoy a movie because the main character is not a towering figure, then I guess that’s your prerogative. I think that’s pretty dumb, but whatever.
Otherwise, the story, dialogue, acting, action and everything is top notch.

Sorry to say it like this, but you just don’t get it. I haven’t read all of the books, like 4 or 5 of them. In each novel Jack Reacher’s size is a major part of the story. in the book the movie is based on, his size is (being able to kill the victim with one punch by breaking the neck with one punch) a major part of the story. It’s not dumb at all for fans of the novels to be upset to have the character, Jack Reacher (6’4" 250), be cast as fucking Tom Cruise. It is fucking sell out bullshit. But, I kinda still want to see it. A good movie, is a good movie.

I’ve previously stated that I understand. My point was that “Yes, this isn’t a TRUE Jack Reacher movie, but it’s still a good movie, and you should watch it on its own terms”.
