Is Football Inherently Flawed?

Really? So you think that a billionaire team owner is going to pay a guy millions of dollars a year cause he has bad technique and discipline? Or the running back or wide receiver for trying to allude the tackle?

What I think internet warriors fail to realize is that none of us could play in the NFL, do not even delude yourself. And if you have not seen a game live then your opinion doesn’t mean anything.

Like I will not comment on rugby or Australian football, I have not seen it live.
Wow, I knew someone would get defensive and take that the wrong way.

I worded it wrong. What I mean is the structure and discipline thats enforced during play in rugby is completely different to “football”. The rules are set up to prevent dangerous hits.

Thats whats lacking in football. But its also why they cant really be compared.

I know I didn’t write that, but I didn’t want to bring rugby into it to make it into a NFL v rugby, which turns into a America vs England YouTube shitfest like that comment might make it. NFL obv has skill and technique.
hahahahahahahaha fair enough. And for the record I could see myself trying rugby if I was about 10 years younger.

Not defensive, just stating a fact. Like has been said not to take this into a NFL vs Rugby or US vs England debate.

I think to have an educated discussion and opinion on this topic you #1 need to have played football and #2 seen the NFL games live.

People who have done this can then understand the speed of the game and the freakish athletic ability of these guys.

I dont think I would go into a Rugby or Soccer thread and discuss what I think the game needs to change or do, cause I have not seen these professional games at a high level.

I agree seeing any sport live gives you a much better idea of how athletic and gifted “football” and rugby players are. Most people dont appreciate the intensity of these sports by watching them on tv.

I have seen both live but I’ve never played football. But I dont think that invalidates my opinion which was only about why I think you see less serious injuries in rugby

If you have seen NFL live then you can have an appreciation. I actually agree with the reason why less serious injuries in rugby, if you have a helmet you will hit harder.

But like has been said then if you remove helmets it changes the game to a bastardized rugby type game.

just go back to the helmets and shoulder pads of the 60s-70s. The guys that led with their faces always had crooked noses and fewer teeth. How many “big” hitters of today do you see with faces like those guys of the past?

If you want to reduce the brain injuries, make it so that a “bad” hit carries immediate pain to the hitter in the form of broken noses and facial lacerations. A future brain injury is too ambiguous for most of these guys to consider the immediate implications.

You will still get players with brain damage (a la John Mackey(RIP)), but you will greatly reduce the occurrences.

Well my thought is that keep the game as is, however increase the technology and make a standard of equipment.

Right now in Nascar there have been mandatory changes that can protect a guy from dying in a 200 mph crash and you cant tell me we cant find a way to protect football players?

Yeah, I went MIA for a minute. I went sailing for a week on the Chesapeake. Anyway, I may have the opportunity to hang out with Clinton Portis of the Redskins this week (I usually run into him two or three times a month - we have a few friends in common). When I do (and if the opportunity presents itself), I’ll ask him what his opinion as a player is. He’s generally pretty cool and easy to talk to.

? Okay dont know what you mean by that. I was referring to the gear they are all required to wear after #3 “whats his name” died (dont watch Nascar)

I beg to differ. I saw plenty of concussions in 8 years of rugby (trainings and games saw “mild” concussions at least fortnightly, and someone got cleaned up properly at least monthly), a few shoulder dislocations, and 5 cases where an ambulance came on the field and take a player away due to a suspected neck injury.
I’ve been concussed myself a few times from impact, or a knee to the temple in a ruck or maul going down.

It’s not simply about the gear, it’s about how you lead in to the tackle and the mentality of the players involved. Until you start penalising players for behaviour which increases the likelyhood of concussion, and mandating modern helmets and pads which are shown to reduce the risk, then it’ll continue.
You don’t become a pro without wanting to push the limits of the rules, or having a certain disregard for your body.
I’m not saying it never happens, and trust me I’ve seen some pretty bad injuries too. One of my teammates dislocated his HIP during my first ever game lol. I don’t know statistics so I won’t claim anything to be factual, I just feel like there are a TON of concussions in football, and like you said, you see maybe one guy get a major concussion every month playing rugby. I can only think of one player on my team who ever had an obvious concussion, and like you said, it was about how he played. He was always trying to light people up and didn’t practice good form, and guess what, HE got concussed.

I just think the likelihood of serious brain damage is decreased when you have to actually take steps to prevent getting yourself killed when making a tackle.
My guess is the difference is US rugby compared to Australian rugby.

Lynch wouldn’t have a career with todays’ rules. Watch how many times he leads with his head in just this three minute clip.

Hahahahahahahahahahaahahahahaha GOD I LOVE FOOTBALL. I still think Lynch just played in the rules of the time. He could have adjusted to todays rules.

Never heard or read anything that Lynch is fucked up physical or mentally.

Maybe he is just one of those genetic freaks that can take the pounding.
