Does anyone know if this is banned by the NCAA?
Why? Are you planning on taking DMSO? What would you possibly be using it on yourself for? I know it has a few medicinal uses like anti-inflammatory use…but there’s lots of other commonly used stuff for that.
I am thinking about using it for tendonitis /tendinosis in my elbow. I haven’t had success with 3 cortisone shots, ART, or any other treatments and want to try this out. I asked our trainer about it and she said it was illegal?? I know it isn’t FDA approved but I was surprised when she said this.
Not illegal. Most of the time, trainers will not know what certain products are and will often say, “banned” simply for safety reasons.
I remember a trainer once saying Myoplex was banned.
Secondly, I wouldn’t use DMSO to help tendonitis. I remember my organic professor giving us the little lesson of whenever you put DMSO on the skin, whatever else is on the skin goes in as well (i.e. dirt and other particles). I can’t see that as being very productive especially when other products are on the market.
DMSO may be used as a vehicle to allow for quick absorption of a drug through the skin. It has little if no actual health benefits.
In my experience, DMSO is widely used as an ingredient for paint strippers. It is considered a hazardous waste when spent (used). I would suggest extreme caution, as I believe it is a chemical that is a suspected carcinogen.

As a general rule, if it says “methyl” anywhere in the chemical name, it has toxic properties.
Ok so it looks like DMSO might not be the way to go. Have any other suggestions? I feel like I’ve just run out of options.
I’m guessing you did the whole strengthening the muscles and everything else as you said you’ve done ART and talked to trainers and you compete NCAA. If you were thinking about using DMSO, you’d be using something along the lines of icy/hot or an analgesic like that (mineral ice/tiger balm).

Yep, I’ve done tons of rehab. I don’t think icy hot would really do anything for me since I’m not doing anything with my elbow at all, just trying to heal it. I’m redshirting this year so it isn’t like I need something that will just help me push through.
I used DMSO this past summer in a neuroscience lab. It makes up some of the solutions used in the brain staining procedure.
sorry guys, but pure DMSO is an organic chemical. Its perfectly safe if used properly. Just wash your skin and use a sterile pad to apply, it breaks down very quickly after that and poses no danger.
The FDA has “banned” its sale for use on humans or to imply that it has health/healing properties. I don’t think the NCAA would test for DMSO. It does not enhance performance. It “may” be an antinflamatory. It breaks down into methy and sulphur and some other chemicals. Not excactly the kinds of things that would set off a drug test or anything.
It is still used in other countries as an anti-inflamatory and can be found on the internet and purchased in the US. Usually it is marketed as a “veterinary” ointment to be used on horses and the like. Let us know if it works if you decide to use it.
