Is Benching Bar to Your Chest Bad?

…and yet they do.

Almost daily, I see a covey of pencil-necked emo kids sidling up to the bench, loading up two plates to “warm up”, and then proceeding with some 13x15 set/rep scheme of virtual 6-board combination elbow bends/nut-high rack pulls (for the spotter), capping it off with a “gun show” for the mirrors that would make Ah-nold blush.

I know it’s not a big deal, and it’s none of my business. Still pisses me off to no end, though.

OP, touch your chest with the bar. If the ill-informed adviser is around, stare him in the eye throughout your set for extra cool points. If he says anything, bite him.[/quote]

So you are saying sometimes you have to treat the gym like jail? Make sure the only ass being raped is the fat guy losing weight in the sauna? Well played sir, time to express my dominance and grunt until everyone knows whats up.

While we are on the topic of weird things people do while bench pressing, what is up with people pressing with their thumbs sticking flat out against the bar? No one has been able to explain it to me but one of the guys I used to train with insisted on doing it, and I have seen others do it as well.

its not a false grip, its like if you made a thumbs-up while holding the bar. It looks like Dave’s grip at 4:50 in that video, before he wraps the thumb around.

It’s like a compromise between regular grip and false grip.

It make the tendons in my brain hurt thinking of a witty response to the original poster for the VBP commenter.

Since there is only one squat rack at my gym with the only olympic bar too (more to come in Nov.), I had to wait the other day for some to finish his “military presses”. As I watched him push press 40 kilos for three reps, even though he looked rugby league strong, I just didn’t have the heart to ask him if he was recovering from shoulder surgery.

Maybe it was a deload day.

One would hope. However, the strange rep progression he used, the very few reps, and the clear substitute of the push press for military press leads me to think not. I just donâ??t comment at the gym though. I see so many people doing things that will clearly lead to injury, but just figure if they are not asking someone they donâ??t want to know. Also, if they get injured that just leaves more room for meâ?¦

Don’t know about the ass rapings or the gruntings, but dumb-shit advice should be confronted as passively-aggressive as possible. Mostly just for shits 'n giggles.

I like this guy

Today there were two guys repping virtual 6 or 7 board presses with 300 lbs. on the bench, and 250 lbs. on the inclines. Seriously, 2-3 inch ROM. Its spreading like the plague.
