I have a rolling thunder, thick handled wrist roller and a couple different coc grippers. They all develop different types of grip strength so it depends on what you are trying to develop. I like all of them and would recommend that you try out a variety of different grip tools to see what you need. If you can’t afford it just buy one or two for now and add to your collection over time as you can afford it.
I currently have three of the COC grippers, T through #2, can get three solid reps on the #2 at this time.
Ironminds stuff is not cheap, but the quality seems to be firstrate on their stuff. As for us poor folk, with a little creativity and a trip to Lowes you can build most of the equipment yourself, depending on what you’re training for. I work on the grippers and am also working on my wrist strength for levering and steel bending. My fav toys for that are sledgehammers, or get a sledgehammer handle, some small 5 and 2.5 lb plates. You may have to shave down the head of the handle a bit to get the plates to slide on, unless you’re using Olympic size. Put a collar on the bottom and top of the plates, and instant plate loaded sledge trainer.
Also fun to go to Lowes, pick up hammers and lever them and freak teh sales folks out. Best so far is a 12 lb, arm out to the side, elbow locked and lowered to my nose.
What type of gripping do you want to increase. There’s crushing grip, pinching grip, supporting grip ect. Each is a specific type of grip strength.Personaly i’d work all of those aspects to develop good all around gripping strength.Rolling thunder works your supporting grip. The grippers work crushing grip and plate pinching works the pinch grip.
Hi, I’m the FNG. I agree totally with the “go to Lowe’s” comment. I went and bought a section of pipe, a hub to screw it into, a length of chain, a carbiner, a strong bolt, a 1x4, and a hook/eye that screws into the wood. Put it all together and you have a loading pin that holds olympic plates and a three inch thick “blockbuster” grip tool to hook onto it. All told I think I got out of there under $15. I also made a wrist roller too that I use with my squat stands as supports. Haven’t figured out how to fabricate the Rolling Thunder though. The revolving handle has me stumped. I could afford it, but it’s more fun making them. Suggestions?
I would think Rolling Thunder would work crushing grip like the grippers. The grippers are just to measure how strong you are (1, 2 or 3???).
What does the wrist roller support.
I would like a strong grip (everything).
In the Ironmind Catalog Nathan Holle said the “Holle It Up DB” is all you need. It works all your grip. 1 tool does it all. But that tool seems thesame as the Rolling Thunder: a rolling thick handled DB.
Tbdl,
I have a rolling thunder handle. It basically works the supporting grip meanining you have to hold it and your hand and fingers stay in the same place with no range of motoin for your hand and fingers. The grippers work a fuller range of motion.I like them both but would probably pick the grippers for overall crushing strength. If you really want some other opinons on grip strength and workouts go to the “Gripboard” site they all kinds of gripping imfo.Hope this helps.
