I have recently learned that this is due to the overactivation or tightening of the traps. Try focusing on relaxing your shoulders when you exercise. You probably will begin to get tension headaches during other lifts because you will be tightening the traps. Loosen the traps and you will lose the pain.[/quote]
I actually implemented this today and it worked pretty well. Though I did traps today along with chest. I made sure not to tilt my head back and irritate my neck while I was shrugging, and I think that helped. Thanks for the tip.
You twice had severe, acute headaches brought on by lifting that were so bad that you had to just lie down and wait for the pain to stop. You then are informed that this may be a symptom of a life threatening condition.
Then you don’t go see a doctor, and do continue the activities that brought on these headaches in the past?
Warm up and breathe. I used to get these headaches when I didnt properly warm up and just started with heavy weights. I usually walk on the treadmill or bike for 5 minutes to get the heart going and breathe properly. Also drink alot of water and you will be right. These headaches are about as common as rotator cuff injuries.
One day, when people try to ask for serious medical advice on an internet forum without having consulted a doctor, their computer will punch them in the face. That day will be glorious.
The doctor’s secretary called me today around 1:30 saying that there was a cancellation in a testing appointment if I wished to come in earlier than next week, so I went in the clinic at 4:00 and had a CT Scan and MRI done. The doctor said that there were no signs of any problems in my head. I told him that I have never really bothered warming up. He said that it was most likely that not warming up caught up with me.
I told him that I successfully completed two workouts where I did warm up before, and he agreed that this further pushed towards the idea that it was most likely me not warming up. He said that if I continue to get these headaches that there are a few more tests he can take on me.
I worked out my back today after the scans and this time, I did not take Ibuprofen to see if this was a factor. I did not receive any headaches.
I was pretty confident before I went to the doc’s office that I had found the solution after having tested whether or not warming up was the problem. Just wanted to be on the safe side. I’ve gone through all 4 days of my workout cycle without getting a headache (legs and shoulders, chest and traps, back and calves, and bis and tris), so hopefully I, with warming up, I will not receive any more headaches.
But on another note, I find everyone’s serious and caring attitudes towards others’ situations very admiring. I can’t say the same for too many other forums. Thanks to everyone for all of the responses and caring.
I got these exact headaches doing 20 rep squats. Tight traps. Stretch traps often and before workouts. Went away within 2 weeks. Lots of people have posted about this.
