I was just looking through and got confused as hell on how to do it.
I’m a:
Male
24 Years old
181
I don’t know what age group to join. (Juniors only go up to 23) and Masters are 35 and up.
If I did join a fed, where would I compete in. I guess I’m just confused on this all and if someone could point me to the right direction so I could have reading material just tell me as I have looked for quite sometime.
I’d also like to see what the records are for my area so that I can kinda gauge myself with that progress. I have been to powerlifting watch, but when I have to select Teen, Junior, collegiate and senior I just don’t know which one to pick.

Thanks for the help
Sorry for the stupid question[/quote]
Not stupid because i had a similar question and thanks to you mine is answered.
It does not matter which fed when you are new. Just do a meet and learn how to compete. Doing a meet will automatically make you stronger. Does not matter if you total low because you would be on your way up. I lift uspf due to meets available in my area and I like the strick rules. I have lifted in APF GPC usapl and many others. You will get the feel for where the good meets are and how friendly the lifters are. JUMP IN FEET FIRST. Good luck
Once you find a meet you would like to do, I would just contact the person whos running it. He should be able to answer any questions you have. And if he cant, find another meet.
As a side note, how do you go about finding meets. I too have seen powerliftingwatch.com , but are there any resources for finding maybe smaller, more local meets.
I don’t think you have to join one fed, I’m a member of the APF and UPA.
Where do you live?
Some feds are bigger in certain parts of the country
Are you planning on competing Raw, Single-ply, or Multi-ply?
You would be competing in the open division, if you want to look at records you should go to each federations website, there you can find their records
Powerliftingwatch.com has all levels of meets listed from local to national level. Just find a meet that is in your area. Trust me, it doesn’t matter how it’s listed, if there is no qualifying totals to enter, then you will see people from rank beginnners all the way up to high level athletes at any given meet.
Powerliftingwatch has a page called Compare Federations that will tell you what is allowed in each federation, but if you just search for meets in your area there is usually a link to the entry form which will tell you what divisions there are going to be (i.e. Raw/Equipped, Full Power/Push Pull/BOF, and age brackets).
You would compete in the Open class since you are too old for Juniors and too young for Masters. And unless you plan on using a shirt/suit/briefs, you would compete in the Raw division. Each federation allows different levels of gear (belt, wrist wraps, knee sleeves), even in the raw division so you have to check with that fed’s home page or check the Compare Federations page on plwatch.
You can usually register for the meet on the day of the meet, but it’s more expensive that way, so if you know that you are going to compete, then register early. As far as joining the federation and paying for it, you can just do that on the day of the meet, and I’m pretty sure the cost is the same whether you do it in advance or not.
Also, you will need to select your weight class. Just choose 181 on the registration form. You will weigh in anywhere from 24 hours to 2 hours before the meet, depending on the fed. If you go over your weight class, they will just bump you up to the 198’s, so it’s not a big deal if you pick 181 and come in at 185, or vice versa.
