Classes/totals

Firstly i know very little about powerlifting (read: nothing) so excuse my iggnorance, please :expressionless:
is the class system still around and if so how does it work?
i guess i would be in the 220lb weight class as i am a hair under that (whatever  )
if my totals are 1160, does that mean i am a ā€œclass 3ā€ ?
the only reason i ask is cause i saw this on the EliteFTS website:
http://www.elitefts.com/documents/elite.htm

out of curiosity what are you guys ā€œratedā€ at, or more simply what do you total and what do you weigh.
any ā€œeliteā€ here?
cheers!

I’m a class 1, in the 181lb class. If my lifts keep improving at the rate they have been going up lately I expect to total master in 2004. Not a bad improvement considering that a little less than a year ago I was totalling in class 3. It’s all about getting faster.

are the ā€œclass foursā€ for amputees or something? shit if i can do that i think anyone could, hardly an acheivement…
also is it better to get a bigger total always or a better total in relation to your weight?

Whetu- There’s an unspoken code in powerlifting that says it’s not cool to belittle other people’s lifts. If someone works their heart out and totals class 4 they deserve respect. There are many people in the world that don’t put out ANY effort to improve themselves. And yes, there are some amputees and handicapped people that compete in powerlifting. IMO those people are stronger in more ways than most of us.

i’d be astonished to see how many people could even perform the class 4 weight totals. I know that not even 99% could in my gym. I wont say what class i’m in but i’m pretty suprised considering i never train powerlifting style. laters pk

yeah sorry , that was pretty shit.
what i kinda meant was that i am surprised they have class that someone who has 9 whole weeks of power lifting could achieve.

Whetu, you are looking at this through rose colored glasses.

pkradgreek is right, most people you see in the gym (not to mention the regular world) cant hit those class 4 numbers. I know I couldnt if my deadlift wasnt at least average since my bench and squat totally suxor.

Most people have very weak backs and weak hams/glutes, and that would just punish them in their rating.

I can barely hit class 3 right now, although should be class 2 by the end of the year at the rate im going.

No probelem, whetu.

for what it is worth,
i totalled class I in 4 weight classes, 181, 198, 220, 275.
i totaled master at 198. i came somewhat close at 181, but never was really close to a master total in the 220 or 275 class. i will concur with the statement made before, 90% of the people at the rather large fitness center i workout at cannot perform a FULL squat with over 300lbs, most cannot squat full with even 225-275, and 90% never do ANY deadlifts.

as a 35 year old short fat guy, i can squat and pull into the 500’s and most think i am crazy.

Heavy, way to lay down the law.

On a side note, enough of this ā€œfat guyā€ stuff. You aren’t close to fat, not unless you are comparing yourself to runway models.

1223 at 148 is my best contest total. That is a class 1 for USAPL.

beef

I just saw that chart and I guess I’m a Class 1. I’m in the 198 class and total over 1450. My coach is Chris ā€œ2Strongā€ Turner and in his prime he was Elite status.

Chris Turner, the military lifter? I met him several years ago in Austin at a meet. I was a puny 148 back then totalling about 1000 or so. I remember he had a helluva pull.

1438 in the 242 drug tested Juniors but this was a year and a half ago, Going to compete again in December. …Big MArtin

so we have some strong mofos on board eh!!
big martin for some reason i always thought you were old, wise beyond your years i spose

Nope I am only 22, I participated in powerlifting while also playing division 1 baseball and working as a student strength coach. I did a lot of bench/dead meets SLP, and have done 2 full meets, this was while ago, I have been basically training my ass off and gaining weight for the last year since my baseball carear ended. So I would say I have added a good 200 pounds to my total since then, so hopefully I will total 1600+ or so this year when I compete, the problem is deciding wich meet and federation to continue or really start my powerlifting carear in I am leaning to the APF or IPA…Big Martin

bigmartin, we have many similarities I wasn’t aware of. Kind of weird.

thanks anti, i need to keep you around for my own personal cheer leader, LOL! good work martin, i too did not realize how young you were until i pm,d you a while back. yes, there are some ā€œrealā€ lifters on this ā€œbodybuildingā€ forum arent they?

beef, that is a very respectable total for the 148’s. good work.

165 class
310 bench
510 dead
620 squat
1440 Total

15 years and lots less hair ago. Only time, motivation. a shoulder impingement and 15 pounds of fat keep my from trying again.
